Race horse legs is one thing, but I think Paul is still having some trouble with basic anatomical proportions. In other words: Bud’s calf is ridiculously huge.

Just saying, realism is not the only style in artwork. We’re meant to understand that Bud’s lousy self-image isn’t precisely accurate.
I think the changes in the shape of Katherine’s face and smile are the same thing. She is drawn more normally as she begins to feel more able to handle social interaction.
Not that I expect you to notice this anytime soon, but if you do, does this make sense?

Yes, I know this is a comic and that as such it needn’t be realistic. I was actually making fun with the “basic anatomical proportion” thing. I consider Paul a very good illustrator.
As for the “looks changing along with self-image”. I think this is a case of what TVTropes calls: “everyone is jesus in purgatory”. Which in this case means mistaking changes in Paul’s drawing style for deep symbolic meanings. Of course I can’t be sure, but that would be my bet.
Exactly. Just the way that the people who designed Mr. Incredible have no concept of anatomy, clearly, I mean with that huge upper body and those teeny tiny little legs they gave him. They need to go back to art school. Oh, wait a minute, comic art is about exaggerating the body, maybe those folks did know what they were doing.
I dunno… Bud puts me in mind of Charlie Chapman. The man had ridiculously huge and muscled legs that looked somewhat out of proportion with the rest of him; but dang he could pull off some stunts as a result.
