I’d like to think you’re smiling when you say that, but I imagine it’s a derisive one if you are….. in which case, you’re deriding a situation involving demons occupying a baristas corpse, millenia old golems, characters that can *poit* about at will and otherwise ordinary people that can chuck engine blocks like shot-puts for a lack of strict adherence to realism?
No, I am smiling and I think it’s fine. Just to be clear, I’m not being derisive at all. As Eee mentioned below, it’s not the first time Creepy has done something with a visual aid. Just the first time she did it as a gag. It’s not something Paul should overdo (IMO) but I hope it’s not the last.
There is another web-comic where females can conjure-up the “insulted-female’s hammer of doom” (El Goonish Shive) sooo..it’s not just Tom&Jerry, or Road Runner that have this amazing ability. (Though, in Goonish, it is , indeed, only the females that can summon this hammer..no fair!)
Actually, in E.G.S The Hammer is no longer summonable by females. Since Jerry the imortal “died” and gave the Hammer to Susan as a magical Hammer only she herself can summon physically. ^^;
Conscience has shown she can summon up images of items at will (http://wapsisquare.com/comic/take-this-and-do-this/), this isn’t anything new for her. Now, if Tina had pulled out an Akane style mallet and hammered Nudge, THAT would have startling! Especially for Nudge…
Speaking of whom, her freckles make me thinks she’s constantly breaking a sweat.
I’m waiting for Tina or Nudge to react to Conscience and show she’s really there…
Good point about being able to summon images at will. The “freckles” look more like bumps to me. We need a reference pic of Ms. Bontemps with which we can compare.
yeah. Tina’s eyes look almost…human. I wonder if Nudge’s appearance has, what the term I’m searching for, coalesced the Tina demon collective? Getting them all to focus on the same thing at the same time.
And I immediately flashed on “The Coward of the County”:
The Gatlin boys just laughed at him
When he walked into the barroom
One of them got up
And met him half way cross the floor
Tommy turned around they said
Hey look, old yeller’s leavin’
You could’ve heard a pin drop
When Tommy stopped and locked the door
Nudge didn’t fight back, physically, with Phix. (Although there may be a whole ‘nother dynamic there.) And she was caught off guard with the cold temperatures. I think she’s had any fight smacked out of her already.
And, Tina must have some kinda fightin’ in her background. That’s really good form on her follow through…
Geesh! I expected a little thanks before the hitting began. Maybe Nudge will make her case after she picks up her teeth, or, perhaps between blows. She’s good at that.
Also, I guess Tina’s caveat about not directly harming anyone doesn’t extend to supernatural beings/pests. Gotta hand it to Nudge, however, she’s no coward. She will face up to those she’s wronged come what may. Of course, being immortal probably helps.
I don’t know… I have a feeling she doesn’t even acknowledge anything she has done wrong yet. Like how it seemed she was twisting around what happened between her and Phix wasn’t completely her fault… 😉
Call it blissful ignorance, arrogance, or joker’s jolly? >D
Of cause shelly doesnt know what is going on (even tho CLK did) so she will possibly try to stop the fight. Or maybe Phixx will show.
Either way Nudge made Tina indirectly cry so Tina possibly has a fair bit of aggresion to work through!
Did Nudge do anything to her? Well, aside from help her demons animate her corpse, no. Did she force her into dangerous situations? Not unless the notice of a Sphinx was something that a collection of demons wouldn’t have. The only negative feeling that I can think of is when Tina broke down because of Nudge’s ABSENCE.
So, I’m confused as to why Tina is hauling off here…
All right, so maybe I stand alone on this, but I think Creepy’s bell made perfect sense. If you read it without the bell, there’s a knock-down drag-out brawl starting, and it doesn’t quite flow right.
Meanwhile, remembering that in the quasi-reality of the comic, Creepy IS still in Shelly’s head (but Tina can see her). Therefore, Shelly’s reaction to Tina’s comment is, “Aw crap, totally deserved slugfest coming on, let’s watch the fireworks!” Especially combined with the eye roll.
“Round-one,” this sounds like Atomic is right. I don’t think Tina is going to be satisfied with just that one. That hurt; probably more than when Phix decked her. Nudge is finding out being ‘human’ is not all fun and games. In fact it hasn’t been fun yet at all for her.
Yeah, Shelly is sticking around. Comanches love a good fight, either being in one, or watching it. And when it’s a Bubushka vs Schoolgirl tussle, you would want to witness it. Then, on your deathbed, you can look back, and say, “My life was pretty kick-ass.”
In theory I agree. My problem is I respect Paul and his work a lot, even though it may not always seem like it by my criticisms. I’m afraid such a thing could soon get out of control and become a monster that would eventually misrepresent his work. At least represent it in ways in which he would not approve. It might end up giving away so much of what has happened thus far in the story, people might not bother going through the archives, missing a lot of the great art and feel of the story as presented. Worse yet, his page hits would suffer, leading to less advertising revenue.
Perhaps I’m totally wrong about this, but those would be my concerns. The advertising it would give might make it worthwhile. I’d like to see Paul’s take on this issue.
I sadly agree with you. Cliff’s Notes are no substitute for actually reading the book. Maybe they will get you a good grade on an exam, but they are no substitute for the experience the author originally intended. I would not want to deprive Paul of any potential page hits either. Besides, reading the archive should be a rite of passage into the Wapsi world.
That’s probably it; but remember, Tina’s demons have already DONE harm, they chased Monica into the path of that bus. That’s why they have no memory of their previous lives, they’re being punished. I’m not sure, having already broken the Law, if they’re at risk of further punishment for breaking it again…
Being subject to the ultimate penalty for doing harm is Tina’s punishment for having done harm before – apparently you only get two strikes in the demon world…
There may be a bit of catharsis going on there. I think every one of Tina 2.0’s demons aligned in agreement on this action (and the subsequent ass kicking), and may merge because of it.
Uh-oh. Looks like the Twin Cities are getting thocked with even more snow. I would make a snide remark about global warming here, but I don’t want to open that container of wrigglers. Good luck Paul.
I think the collective was permitted that one single blow as revenge for everything Nudge did to Tina. Shelly and M and Phix won’t let it go farther, if Nudge gets pushed (haha, pun), she’ll make things difficult for the group and that would be VERY bad timing with what they’re attempting.
Even more than the ding-ding, I’m really liking Creepy Girl/Shelly’s Conscience’s eyes in the first panel looking down and to the right at Nudge’s outfit (probably those crazy socks). Such a minor thing, especially with her pretty much melting into the background while all focus is on Tina, Shelly, and Nudge, but it still says so much.
Payback?
No….cat fight
Rat / saytr fight. (nod, nod)
a cat fight would be if Phix were involved…
That wouldn’t be much of a fight, now, would it?
I’ve got this suspicion that Nudges transformation was more complete than intended.
Ding! Ding! Hahahaha!
And we have crossed over into cartoon territory, wherein the characters can instantly bring forth all manner of objects, usually a large mallet.
^^^ This. 🙂

Forget mallets — the creme de la creme of such fights was in Lilo & Stitch when Stitch picked up a VW Beetle and said, “Punch Buggy!”

A hammer which she has yet to use since then, if I remember correctly. Besides, hammerspace is NOT the weirdest thing that comic’s ever done.

You guys do realize Dietzel has been doing this basically forever?
Creepy does sight gags? I dunno… I just feel mildly disappointed.
At least she has a sense of the absurd/humor.
Well, we know she’s into visual aids…
Except she’s not wearing a skimpy outfit like “real” fight girls…
I think Concience is awesome for the sight gags… how many times have you wanted to do something like that and just settle for imagining or pantomime
I thought she borrowed the door bell. 😉
Nah – that’s a boxing arena bell.
The bell made me laugh 🙂 I’m liking creepy girl more and more.
So – Tina did recognize Nudge. As it should be.
This could be a real slobber-knocker!
Sure you’re name should be Jim R. instead of Jon B?
That woman is a HOSS!
Interesting texture/eyes on Tina.
And I hope Nudge still has teeth after that whack on the jaw/mouth.
Good follow thru with that punch?
yeah. Tina’s eyes look almost…human. I wonder if Nudge’s appearance has, what the term I’m searching for, coalesced the Tina demon collective? Getting them all to focus on the same thing at the same time.
Even though they’re momochrome here, I get the impression the eyes are blood red at the moment.
Same impression here.
I suspect Hate and Anger may have taken charge of the Collective right now…
Well, Hate DID show up at the shop a bit ago…
Good point, jwhouk. It did appear she/it was lurking in the background. Foreshadowing? (no pun intended)
Love the eyes–or should I say eye–Wonderfully creepy.
Nudge seems to having a bit of trouble with her new lifestlye.
More love for Connie…
I think the rats have anger issues.
So, will Shelly be the one to have to stop this fight? Or will perhaps Phix walk in and have to layeth the smackdown?
Nope, this is a one-punch payback.
Note the comment about Phix having fun at Nudge’s expense. Bet that is why the clothing is totally inaddiquate for the weather.
Yep. It appears Eee was right yesterday when he/she said it was Phix who got her to wear that outfit.
“Shelly, stand by the door.”
And I immediately flashed on “The Coward of the County”:
Love the eyes!
No — this isn’t a one shot deal at all….
I dunno – looks as if it could be “one and done” to me.
Nudge didn’t fight back, physically, with Phix. (Although there may be a whole ‘nother dynamic there.) And she was caught off guard with the cold temperatures. I think she’s had any fight smacked out of her already.
And, Tina must have some kinda fightin’ in her background. That’s really good form on her follow through…
By? I’d love to read the whole thing…
That’s a Kenny Rogers song, “The Coward Of The County”.
… oh.
[feels very dumb.]
Stop it? Why would anyone wanna stop it?
Especially Phix. I’m suprised she’s not filming from across the street – oh wait, maybe she is.
Nah – sitting there with a hot dog and a beer, holding a littlt flag that says “Tina”…
That would be funny. Now would be the point at which Phix would leap up cheering and spilling her popcorn.
TEEEE-NA!
TEEEE-NA!
TEEEE-NA!
yeah, and rolling around the floor laughing!!! 😀
I’m really starting to love Conscience. She always knows the right thing to say…Ding! Ding!. ROFL!!
Ridiculous outfit: $120
Coffee: $4
Watching Tina finally blow something other than sunshine: Priceless
PS: tee hee “ding! ding!”
+1 on the Tee Hee at the “ding-ding”
Sexiest. Punch. EVER!
That punch looked like it started somewhere in Maine and landed around Oregon.
And knocked down a couple of redwoods. Notice the spray of blood.
Geesh! I expected a little thanks before the hitting began. Maybe Nudge will make her case after she picks up her teeth, or, perhaps between blows. She’s good at that.

I must say, “Thock!” seems a bit … inadequate…
Whump?
Though, that IS the actual sound it makes (in Your head when being hit AND when hitting with a good bare-fisted one full on the left..don’t ask…)
Thock theems thficient to me.
“What happened to the ‘Kaboom’? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering ‘Kaboom’!”
AND NUDGE GOES DOWN! NUDGE GOES DOWN!!
DAAAAAAANNG!! Who didn’t see that shit-storm coming?? Tina’s got one helluva nice right hook! LOL
LEFT HOOK!
RIGHT CROSS!
BODY BLOW!
BODY BLOW!
BODY BLOW!
*star*
dun dun dun
SUPER PUNCH!
… and kick kick kick …
Now THAT was worth the wait 🙂
Of cause shelly doesnt know what is going on (even tho CLK did) so she will possibly try to stop the fight. Or maybe Phixx will show.
Either way Nudge made Tina indirectly cry so Tina possibly has a fair bit of aggresion to work through!
Wait… Why is Tina punching Nudge?
Did Nudge do anything to her? Well, aside from help her demons animate her corpse, no. Did she force her into dangerous situations? Not unless the notice of a Sphinx was something that a collection of demons wouldn’t have. The only negative feeling that I can think of is when Tina broke down because of Nudge’s ABSENCE.
So, I’m confused as to why Tina is hauling off here…
The rest of the collective had … issues … with Nudge.
I mean, she acted without consulting the rest of them, and got them into situations they didn’t like.
I mean, anchovies … ?
Perhaps as payback for this…
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/you-ordered-anchovies/
Yep. That the one.
That would do it for me…
I would guess that the reason for the afore metioned breakdown and the stunning right cross are the same.
Tina is a collection od demons. Phix is a demon hunter.
When Phix pulled Tina to the library and knocked Nudge out of of the collective, I’m thinking Tina thought that Phix was going to end her.
Instead, Phix was after Nudge who was hiding in the collective and now the collective is getting some payback for putting them in that situation.
Ah!.. Now that makes sense. I was somewhat mistified about the sudden aggression too.
I think it what nudge did, up to, and after this…. AFAIK 🙂
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/about-you/
Okay – so we’ve known that Wapsi characters are familiar with L-Space or a close cognate.
It now appears as if they also have access to hammer-space or its near-twin…
Worse than that, it’s prop space! Meanwhile back at the ring, it’s on like Donkey Kong! *buys popcorn from spooky girl*
All right, so maybe I stand alone on this, but I think Creepy’s bell made perfect sense. If you read it without the bell, there’s a knock-down drag-out brawl starting, and it doesn’t quite flow right.

I like it! 🙂
That’s it, Tina, kick her ass!
Oh, and props to Nudge for figuring out how to diguise her canines.
Whahaha..the dry “ding ding” of creepy-girl cracked me up!
Shelly apparently decided to enjoy the bout.
When the bell sounds, the belle will fight… WHAM!!!
“Round-one,” this sounds like Atomic is right. I don’t think Tina is going to be satisfied with just that one. That hurt; probably more than when Phix decked her. Nudge is finding out being ‘human’ is not all fun and games. In fact it hasn’t been fun yet at all for her.

This could get messy, to put it mildly.
Heh… ‘Test Your Might’ (MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!!)
This strip has generated more comments than most, because it’s more awesome than most. Action! Adventure! Comedy!
Guys ‘n’ gals, we really need a detailed Wapsi wiki. The Gunnerkrigg fans have done an awesome job with theirs, and Wapsi deserves equal attention.

Yay! Bookmarked and starting to plan entries! Thank you for making it — I had no idea how to get started.
JWhouk — is your Wapsi page still up?
ROUND! ONE!
FIGHT!
MORTAL COMBAT!!!
Isn’t she supposed to do no harm??? I guess she isnt a human so its ok?
That’s probably it; but remember, Tina’s demons have already DONE harm, they chased Monica into the path of that bus. That’s why they have no memory of their previous lives, they’re being punished. Time didn’t stop when she spilled coffee on Bud…and she’s not human either.
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/anythingstupid/
Sigh to many “she”s. Tina is not to do harm but Nudge isn’t human… It sounded good in mah head!
OUCH !
Hahaha!! Oh, thank you Creepy little girl. You just used my favorite gag EVER!! *ding, ding*
There may be a bit of catharsis going on there. I think every one of Tina 2.0’s demons aligned in agreement on this action (and the subsequent ass kicking), and may merge because of it.
…So, Shelly’s demon has access to pocket space?
Uh-oh. Looks like the Twin Cities are getting thocked with even more snow. I would make a snide remark about global warming here, but I don’t want to open that container of wrigglers. Good luck Paul.
Poor Nudge. She’s finding out that being a trickster isn’t nearly as much fun once someone catches you and you can’t just escape somehow.
Is this a Pavlovian response to bells for Tina?
Daddy, teacher says every time a bell rings, a woman gets her lights knocked out at the coffee house.
BHAAA-HA-HA-HA-HA!
(This one got me some really funny looks at work.)
Just underneath Tina’s swing, in Nudge’s mouth… Are those TEETH that have been knocked out?!
Tina has one helluva swing! You GO girl!
I think she knocked some of Nudge’s freckles off.
No teeth, just blood is all I can see. Still, that’s GOTTA hurt.
This is just about the most awesome punch thrown/taken by anyone who isn’t as strong/indestructible as the GGs…
Someone play the Mortal Kombat music!
Round one, FIGHT!
Coffee? How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?! ^_^

I love Shelly’s “inner” with the ring bell. Funny.
I’d love to do this in real life. Alas, that is only for the cartoon universe
I have to say the boxing ring bell still makes me laugh as I reread through. I think Round one, fight!
