Okay, Allan is still among the living.

At least until Mom passes judgment (and possibly sentence).

I hate to be anal, but it should be ‘having your way with’ instead of ‘having you’.
In addition, I wish my mom was that cool.

Hey, anal is a lifestyle! Embrace it. Annoy the living hell out of everyone; you only go around once.

You can’t have ‘analyze’ without being anal first. Simple law of spelling.

Realized it after I posted it; did mean to say anal retentive. I’ve been really short of sleep lately …

…Actually, “with whom you’re having your way.” Shouldn’t end a sentence with a preposition. Or a proposition, for that matter. XD

        August 3, 2010, 7:10 pm | #

I got my ears trimmed back because I pointed that sort of thing out once too often. Paul’s ruling was that he would fix actual typos and some really gratuitous errors, but for the most part the characters would speak with the minor grammatical twists and faults one finds in real life speech.

      • Zorklat
        November 18, 2010, 2:04 am | #

People mindlessly applying rules of Latin grammar to English (a Germanic language) is something we really shouldn’t put up with.

Actually, I kinda liked the original wording. Had that enticing hint of the carnivorous about it 😉 Not every grammatical error is bad… sometimes people misspeak in real life. I know I do it all the time…

        August 3, 2010, 2:28 am | #

Nah. May became immortal at a relatively young age, i believe (her twenties, mayhap), so if Allan has, say an older brother…

      • eschmenk
        August 3, 2010, 8:59 am | #

AFAIK, she and Jin did it at the same time. Jin was 18 at the time so Maya would have had to have been at least in her 30s.

      • Fairportfan
        August 3, 2010, 11:06 am | #

        Ummm, Mr Taylor, sir?

      • jwhouk
        August 3, 2010, 3:17 pm | #

Phix mentioned that Jin was an “inquisitive teenager” when she got caught in the mica-lined room.

      • eschmenk
        August 3, 2010, 10:38 pm | #

This confirms Jin’s age. Both Maya and Jin were present when the calendar machine was activated, so they both stopped aging at the same time. I don’t think anyone was particularly “caught” there, but I’m not sure what jwhouk meant.

        August 4, 2010, 11:58 am | #

You know, eschmenk’s link makes me wonder…
now that Jin’s mom has been pulled from the demon-realm (through Monica, the doorway)…
        …does Jin still need Monica?

I didn’t want to be “that guy” but someone else already was, so I get to feel better about myself in a way that makes no difference to anything or anybody. 😀 and I think Fairportfan totally has the un-drawn last panel there!.

There was a comic that Reed Waller (creator of Omaha, the Cat Dancer) did for Wonder Woman Day, showing Hippolyta apparently seriously considering a Very Skimpy Outfit, and that was Diana’s reaction…

Hey, typos happen to the best of us. The way I see it, it’s the same difference as cluing a friend they’ve got a piece of food stuck in their front teeth, or their hangar door is open, etc.

(I agree. It should be “your way” rather than “you way.” )

  9. D. Walker
    August 3, 2010, 12:33 am | # | Reply

Wow, not often you see characters portrayed as looking so physically worn out and tired. Even rarer to see one who is nothing but cheerful smiles in addition. Keep up the fabulous attention to detail, I love it.

Although, that raises another question. Maya is a golem like the rest, so did she already have those bags under her eyes before she became one? Because it almost seems more interesting to imagine that the things she went through were just THAT powerful.

Can’t wait to know more about her! Starting to really love this character,

    ~D.

    • jwhouk
      August 3, 2010, 10:11 am | # | Reply

…That’s actually a good question. Is Maya actually a golem, or is she more like Monica – an “enhanced human”?

      • Fatuncle
        August 3, 2010, 2:06 pm | #

Mayahuel is a golem. IIRC, she originated most if not all of the technology to make golems. She also had a hand in the calendar machine — may have been the driving force behind creating it.

      • Fairportfan
        August 3, 2010, 7:01 pm | #

I don’t think she’s a golem – she became immortal and was ripped from the world when the machine was activated.

        I think.

      • Platonix
        August 3, 2010, 10:24 pm | #

She was ripped from the world when she tried to destroy the thing. That was the calendar machine’s defense mechanism; anyone trying to screw with it was banished to the demon world.

…which is why our heroines pulling it into the demon world was Step 1 in destroying it. Bud started crushing it and was banished to right where she already was.

      • eschmenk
        August 3, 2010, 10:47 pm | #

I’m afraid I have to side with Fatuncle on this.

      • eschmenk
        August 3, 2010, 11:00 pm | #

… and Platonix is correct. Jin and Maya and other timekeepers and politicians became immortal when the machine was activated. That was the first major thing that happened about 10500 years ago. After the priest turned on them, Maya got turned into a golem and took off with the machine. Much later (1450 years ago), she tried to destroy it and got banished to the demon realm. Jin was present that time, too.

      • Fatuncle
        August 3, 2010, 11:05 pm | #

Thanks, eschmenk; I was too tired to find the link.

      • eschmenk
        August 3, 2010, 11:30 pm | #

Oops. Platonix was correct in the first paragraph, but I disagree with the second. The calendar machine was still intact when it was sucked into the demon realm through Monica. Bud chased after it in the next page. She crushed it in the demon realm where it was powerless because our concept of time doesn’t exist there.

NP Fatuncle. Get some rest. 🙂

      • SoWhyMe
        August 3, 2010, 9:32 pm | #

Seems to me this question has come up before. As I recall, it was said then that she actually had herself burned alive and the priests made a golem out of her remains.

People aged more quickly 50,000 years ago. Ask your neighborhood physical anthropologist. Even in her 30s, Maya would be old enough to have collected some eye-bags for herself.

      • SoWhyMe
        August 3, 2010, 9:51 pm | #

People aged more quickly just a couple hundred years ago. Life was hard for most and it wore the body out quickly. That’s why they had to start families at 14 and 15 if they were to have enough kids survive to help them through their old age. Old age starting in their 40s that is. Hundreds of years before that, you became an adult at 13, since you usually didn’t make it to 40. How things have changed.

    • Alaric
      August 3, 2010, 7:37 pm | # | Reply

…I was actually wondering about this, myself. The way it’s drawn, I could lean toward ‘age’ or ‘tired’… maybe it’s the romantic in me that wants to say Maya has been losing sleep trying to think of ways to caually pop that question.

      • Zorklat
        November 18, 2010, 2:24 am | #

Those short lifespans are very much a result of the tech level of the periods. I think we can safely presume that Lanthis’ civilization was significantly more advanced than those with ~40 year *average* lifespans.

Bear in mind that a large factor in that low average was high rates of infant mortality. Most of those who made it through that would have lived past 40.

OTOH, women in such societies did wind up middle-aged by 20.

Alternatively, her skin could be made up of a fine weave of some extremely stong substanse. Because it’s constructed out of threads it’s flexible but the material it’s made out of could be be very strong.

I thought they were made of clay? Granted, it’s MAGIC clay, so is apparently pretty indestructible. (Jin stopped a bus). And apparently it’s flexible enough that they don’t crack as they move around…
Actually, that’s interesting. How are they chemically? Can you etch them (apparently, Tepoz added a line to the writing on their bodies which inadvertently gave Monica control)
