Hmm. Why did Paul do an emphasis of Mindy asleep as panel 4? Is this somehow related to that “clark kent” drawing in the main Forums we were pointed to a few strips ago?
The “Clark Kent” drawing suggests that Mindy’s glasses are a talisman of some sort, which help mask her true appearance. When wearing them she looks like a typical “plain Jane” teen, with freckles or acne (can’t tell which). When she removed the glasses she’s stunningly beautiful (presumably because she’s descended fairly directly from the goddess of love).
So, we’ve sorta concluded that the glasses are a magical tool: a deliberate part of the Masquerade which makes it possible for paranormals to live among humans without attracting too much notice, just as Atsali’s anti-transformation talisman is. This is a fan conclusion, not “revealed Word of Pablo” but it seems like a good bet.
Huge juggs and hourglass figure aside; its likely her compassion tempered with the wisdom she utilizes to get everyone to function as a cohesive group and remain friends. IMHO
Mindy has certainly blossomed in just a few days of story time. Compare the massive cleavage she’s showing in the last panel to when she first appeared back here: http://wapsisquare.com/comic/almost-lost/
Could have happened before they even arrived, since that’s the first time we’ve seen here without something hugged to her chest since the single panel you linked before. Could be that as a quarta-goddess her body is more of an affectation that reflects her mental and emotional state, like Cass’s. It’s not like she’s the first para to spontaneously ‘blossom’ in this comic.
I can’t see any reason for the fourth panel. The only difference I can see is there is no swirl pattern on her glasses now, and she sleeps with her mouth open. Probably snores.
It’s subtle, all right. I’ve leafed backward clear back to where we met Mindy and haven’t seen a single freckle. Barbara shows up with freckles sometimes, but not Mindy.
If the “Clark Kent” sketch is canon, it’s very clear that the glasses carry a masking enchantment, since taking them off had such a strong effect on her appearance. There was no backpack present in that sketch.
I agree, she seems to be using the backpack to conceal her figure from being seen, so it’s a “masking” of sorts, but I don’t think we’ve been given any evidence that is enchanted. That sort of concealment works just as well even if the backpack, and the young woman are 100% mundane.
Being acutely self-conscious about a newly-nubile body isn’t a rare thing for teen girls, and it looks to me as if Mindy is struggling with that issue, and reacting just as a mundane girl might.
The glasses are curious, in that they don’t seem to have any optical effect. The sleeping gear behind them is neither enlarged nor shrunken, neither is it distorted. This must be significant.
They’re nerds, and we’ve seen that their relationship includes a significant amount of nerdly role-playing. They were King Arthur and his horse Patsy from “Holy Grail” in the way to class one day.
Considering Barbara’s mannerisms of late, and her use here of “Captain”, it seems that they are also role-playing the relationship between Kirk (Mindy) and Spock (Barbara).
My theory is that the time-space continuum desires a buxom female as the focal point of the story. With Monica barely even in the picture any more, The Powes That Be settle for boobifying whatever females are being focused upon.

Probably. Without the glasses, her Masking enchantment is no longer active.
What’s a Masking Enchantment?

A) She didn’t hear the warning and WILL go a-wandering solo…
B) Panel 1# next strip will be panel #4 with something new and spooky in the background…
C) Someone/thing will startle her awake and get a full 1/4 Aphroditic gaze…
D) Run-of-the-mill progression from the ‘backpack reveal’ from the Hitoshi arc?
You forgot E); a cut to morning with everyone finding Mindy gone
Also F) Mindy waking up to find everyone else gone.
If you need to ask why panel four without looking at panel four, there’s something you need to know (clue is: there are two of them)
Unless, of course, she isn’t… in which case she is the prime candidate for someone who wanders off to the loo by herself, and gets eaten by a grue.
I wonder if she knows about saying PLUGH?
what about “Plover”, “Y2”, and “xyzzy” ? or Fee Fie Foe Foo?
So in other words, Mindy DIDN’T hear the warning…
If she’s asleep before the others, then it’s time for the traditional putting of her hand in a bucket of warm water.
is it me, or is Scarlet looking more and more like Phix these days? and is that why she’s my favorite out of this group?
I was thinking the same thing.

And it’s not related to removing her glasses. We were seeing this change in the past couple of pages while she still was wearing her glasses.
Maybe riding on Hiroshi’s shoulders triggered her into a major growth spurt…

They have the same optician. 🙂
… and so we have our first future “victim” as it were.
Nice to see Mindy doesn’t drool from her mouth while sleeping
Is Stela deep-cleavage diving in panel one? o_O
To be fair, the “rising moons” make up the better part of her field of vision in that configuration!
Hypnotized.

I’m thinking they shoved some pillows under her head and pulled the blanket up.
Freckles?
It’s subtle – her appearance has changed since she was awake.
I can think of two things that are not quite so subtle…. of course I am a single guy so I notice these things… lol

If you feel there needs to be a reason for panel four, mayhaps you came to the wrong webic 😀
I think it’s the knapsack, not the glasses, that is her masking enchantment.

I’m also curious about Barbara’s form of address: “Captain.” Does that signify something, or is it just an oddity of their friendship?
They’re nerds, and we’ve seen that their relationship includes a significant amount of nerdly role-playing. They were King Arthur and his horse Patsy from “Holy Grail” in the way to class one day.

Could be.
In the top panel at http://wapsisquare.com/comic/tell-ghost-stories/, she is not holding her backpack, and her breasts suddenly are big enough to sit atop Hiroshi’s head.
