And Paul does it again… the one person I don’t think any of us guessed/

      November 18, 2011, 2:04 am | # | Reply

I thought a fair few people guessed. So many were talking about the multiple Shelly’s making the V-Cell that I didn’t bother making a post about it being Shelly today.

        November 18, 2011, 2:05 am | #

You’re quite correct. Like Casey, I thought that was Jin (based mostly on the length of her hair… I had gotten used to seeing Shelly with shorter hair, and had forgotten that she’d sneezed it out again)

        My bad.

It took me a second to recognize Shelly, too. It was the hair and the fact that we couldn’t see her arms.

no, no… can’t be jin, she is still coming term with her mortality???

I thought it was may … but paul says (next ‘block’ :p) its shelly…

It looks like she has mastered changing her form to slim and fashionable!! 😀

Jin and Shelly re very similar except for their eyes. That’s how I always pick the two of ’em apart.

        November 19, 2011, 7:35 am | #

It’s not the hair so much as the personality.

We’re just not used to calm, collected Shelly yet. We’re still used to a Shelly that would have required 3-4 cuss words, an irritated growl, and an insult to get that same point across.

Odd how 80k years in an enchanted forest has a similar effect as a bowling ball to the head. Least it seems more long-term a change though. (>^_^)>

        November 19, 2011, 3:08 pm | #

yeah, well, 80k years is getting on towards a long-term treatment. So I’d expect the results to last a little while too.

Well, I’m glad to see she’s doing better. Last time we saw her, she couldn’t walk or eat solid food.

Also, I’m glad that it’s not just us that don’t know about the deal that Brandi made.

Hey, Danzier – are you currently seeing this page with all of the comments centered, or are they better now? I’m curious if the tag fix worked, or if there’s some other oddness yet to investigate.

I am not ashamed to admit it: heck no I dont’ look that good! For starters, I’ll never manage to duplicate that tan. 😀 But if you want to compare, my gravatar is a charcoal drawing of me in 19th-century garb done by Mark Siegel of Sailor Twain.

At first I almost mistaken Shelly for her little friend till I saw her profile. Shelly’s new tempered demeanor takes a little getting used to.

      • Yamara
        November 18, 2011, 11:17 am | #

Her taste in clothes has matured considerably as well. That’s always been a way to tell Jin and Shelly apart, their style choices. With Jin now reliving human youth and Shelly walking around as perhaps the oldest sphinx on Earth, the body language is changing too.

Time to go full color! ;D

      • Dave
        November 18, 2011, 2:03 am | #

Don’t feel too bad – I made exactly the same mistake.

      • Casey
        November 18, 2011, 2:50 am | #

I tried to figure out why we made that mistake. After all, their character designs are different enough that we shouldn’t have confused them. I came up with something. Her hair and body language project a certain elegance that is fairly new for her, (At least from our perspective, and the perspective of her friends for that matter) but is the kind of thing we are used to seeing in Jin (at least when she maintains her cool). Also, Shelly’s dialogue is reminiscent of the second panel here.

Wow, I sound like such a psych major.

      • Vorlonagent
        November 18, 2011, 11:10 am | #

I was still back at “…is it Shelly or Jin?” when I started reading the comments.”

      • Dave
        November 18, 2011, 12:06 pm | #

I think the body language was a good part of it for me, Casey. I’m used to seeing Shelly as somewhat gawky and awkward in her body… not just because she’s been a muscular tomboy, but as if she wasn’t really comfortable in her own form. That seems to have changed, in this panel… an effect of 80k years of growing up, I suppose, and learning much more about who she really is. Learning why certain things happened to her… and that she’d actually set them up herself… may have brought her some internal piece and allowed her to let go of some defensiveness. Anyhow, she’s looking more comfortable than I can recall seeing her before.

Also, her reference to “this solution” fooled me… I thought it was Jin talking about her transformation to a mortal golem form.

I did miss the nose, though, and shouldn’t have. Shelly’s proud Amerindian “Roman” prow is very different in profile from Jin’s cute little upturned nose.

        November 18, 2011, 10:03 pm | #

The hipshot/thumbs in pockets look definitely says “Shelly” for me.

As to elegance and a softer, more mature look – we also saw it when she had her rendezvous with Heather shortly after returning from the Wood Between The Worlds.

I disagree, from a tailor’s daughters standpoint. A well-tailored outfit can soften a bodybuilders, well, body.

My mother quite frequently tailors suits to allow for martial artists movements, as well as make military uniforms have freedom of movement in combat situations, yet still be regulation neat and trim.

If Shelly has access to a good tailor; which knowing the Divine Miss M I’m certain she does, she can easily have outfits tailored to soften her look. With the new tresses to add to it, it’s easy to go soft and ethereal.

You would think, in 80K years Shelly would get a tad curious as to the why of things, despite being told not to ask. Perhaps it was a matter of “Don’t ask, Don’t die.”

I’d still like to know what Shelly’s accomodations were? A cave with pine needles for bedding? A luxury suite built for a sphinx? Just sleep outside under the … umm … stars? Dark nothingness? Bright nothingness? Clouds mixed with fire and brimstone? From the first looks of her back then, she appeared pretty dirty so I’m guessing outdoors or dirt cave.

I started watching the local cable Spanish channel so I’d have to think about it instead of veg on the couch and rot. After a while my Spanish improved and I got a job and then forgot most of it. Don’t worry too much about reading them in order. I personally think that Guards Guards is a good place to start just because it introduces some important characters, but you don’t lose a lot if you haven’t read preceding books (unless you’re dealing with one of the few direct sequels, like Making Money to Going Postal).

So, Brandi’s deal is still a big wild card in the situation… and those who know about it, aren’t sharing the knowledge.

Based on Monica’s frustration, I’m guessing that she tried to get Brandi to talk about it, and Brandi refused.

Now, Shelly has been told not to ask. What Shelly says about the deal being “still sound” implies it has something to do with the V-cell interdimensional barrier network, but even that’s not certain.

So… why isn’t Brandi willing to talk? Who else (if anyone) knows, and is also refusing?

    – Honor-bound not to talk (a serious promise)?
    – Commanded/programmed not to talk?
    – Too ashamed / embarrassed to talk?
    – Literally and physically unable to discuss it?
    – Too dangerous a secret for anyone else to know?

Maybe it’s like the mystery of Swedish meatballs and Breen – either we’ll never understand, or the knowledge will drive us mad instantly…

I’ve been wondering since the conversation with Brandi after Jin’s transformation why the Earth hasn’t been overrun by folks from other dimensions or worlds in the galaxy at large.

I’ve speclated before that the Chimera was a response to a larger threat and that the Lanthian priesthood felt creating it was nessesary. Not that I’m excusing them for what they did. Since learning of the Chimera’s creation and the methods used to bring it into being, *shudder* I’ve had the nagging feeling that maybe there was a reason for it beyond “For The Evulz”.

Or the Lanthain priests may just be the unmitigated bastards they appear to be. I don’t know.

      • SoWhyMe
        November 19, 2011, 9:54 am | #

Considering none of the supernaturals we know have been like they were portrayed in the myths, you may be right. Still, what we know about the priests is first hand information and not legend, so it’s less likely. OTOH we don’t really know what prompted them to be so reckless. Was it simply a desire for greater power and control, or was there a pressing threat to the whole population of which we have no knowledge? Something which required sacrifice and the creation of a vast power to combat? Brandi and Bud thought Jin was a bastard too. It was many thousands of years before they found out the truth. The way this story twists you never know.

Heck, we may find the priests were being forced by someone else who knew the Lanthians had to go and that the golems would be needed in our present time to meet a new threat. These beings think really, really long term after all.

Or, possibly, potential interdimensional visitors to Earth get stuck on the tarmac for 12 hours, waiting for poit-off clearance in a transport vehicle with defective air circulation, full of screaming babies and clogged toilets, and then the pilot announces that the destination is indefinitely closed due to poor magnetic conditions and that the poit is being redirected to an alternate destination near the Slime Pits of Lesser Stenchworth… thank you very much for poiting with us, we hope you’ve had a pleasant journey.

Can you tell I’m really looking forwards to flying cross-country on the day before Thanksgiving? I’ve been dodging family-get-together obligations for years but this one has caught up with me 🙁

So thats why eury was doing her squeel. its because she had just seen shelly ^^

maybe she just thinks of the golem girls as ‘normal’ and monica and shelly as the ‘famous’ ones 😛

nice way of looking at them if she does ^^

Eventually she’ll be in for the big letdown. Idols are never as great in person. Right now she may be thinking; “Oh dear, she cusses. I wonder if she smokes and gets drunk too?” Euryale strikes me as the type who never says anything worse than “Dernit” Perhaps the ocassional “Shucks.” And when she’s really mad, “Dadburnit!” If she adds “tohell!” she probably gets all embarassed.

Sorry to tell you, but if she is a true ‘Southern Belle’ in every way then nothing will change how she feels about a Monica & Co. A ‘True Southern Belle’ (and I know several) will seem like the sweetest, most comforting and discrete people, until you get into their comfort zone, then all bets are off on what they will let you know about their vices.

Well, yeah. The Golem Girls have been around practically forever, and will be around for the foreseeable future (except maybe Jin, but does Euryale know about her changes yet?),
but Monica and Shelly are human. 100years or so and they’re gone for good. Of course an Immortal with Knowledge from Outside of Time would gush about getting to see them in the few moments that the humans are available.

More less than more. Monica was groomed for her role by May via the glyph training and Shelly was always a sphinx. I would say they were created for their roles as well.

The Deranger is a new hand weapon, of my own subtle deisgn. It fires a beam which disrupts the functioning of the cerebral cortex, driving the target into a state of frothing insanity for an hour or so. Think of it as a Taser for the brain.

Our advertising theme song is, of course, “Foam on, deranged.”

Now’s the time for Euryale to jump up and down yelling “Do the sphinx thing! Do the sphins thing!” To which Shelly can respond, “Sure, but you’ll have to do the snakes thing.” (I’m assuming Shelly went by Tina’s first and was filled in). Then Monica can say, “ooo … I wanna see an ice-sphinx!” Finally Bud will say, “Ok, and I wanna see Euryale plant one on Shelly in sphinx form!” Something for everyone. They all go over to Monica’s and freak out Dietzel. Again.
