She did warn us she’s a technology geek.

A scratch-built V-call would surely be a Top Of The Maker Faire object of admiration for one of her inclinations.

If Euryale ever meets Jeri Ellsworth, I imagine the squeeing would be of earthshattering proportions.

I think I’d be ready to “squeeee!” with her–as long as I didn’t recall how long it took to assemble that “new V-cell, built from scratch” and its cost.

In Euryale’s favor, she has the quietest “Squueeeeees” in the strip, so far. Some of the ones let out by the others can almost be weaponized.

That’s what I was thinking was the case, that because the tech had been lost for millenia it took 80K years to make another one from scratch.

It had been “maturing” (or was being stored) in the Forest, and was apparently planted/embedded into the Sacred Tree by one of the Shellys (not sure which one). I don’t think we know at all clearly who provided it to Shelly-sub-X, let alone who initially constructed it.

Might be someone we know, or it might be a new player yet to be revealed.

So, basically you need the fundamental ingredients and a time machine. Choose a location you know will be untouched by nature or mankind for about 80K years or so, and bury it there in the past. Harvest it in the present (whatever present you’re in) soon after it’s been placed. No waiting. Easy peezy 1, 2, 3zy. Imagine the possibilities. 20 year old Scotch? Yes sir, we can have that for you Tuesday.

You may need one of the great trees in the Time Forest to serve as an incubator.

If so, things could be more complicated than just “bury and wait.” It’s possible that a Time Forest tree must be fertilized, periodically, with the blood of part-Comanche auto mechanics (as the Tree of Liberty must be nourished with the blood of patriots, they say).

Makes sense. Different realms = different rules.

We’ve already seen that with the Demon realm, and arguably with the Sphix realm (aka how Shelly alternates between Earth realm and Sphix realm).

May be possible that whatever rules define the Sphix realm allow easier creation of V-cells than Earth-realm.

Sure. Build the outer shell, fill with plutonium, seal it, and listen to it hum quietly with power. Store in the trunk of a Sacred Tree for many years, while it stabilizes and matures. The frequency of its resonant hum generally rises over the years, and you know it’s ready for use when the pitch approaches that of a mosquito.

Cut down the tree and install the V-cell. You’re done.

“Vimana. We sell no whine before its time.”

Now the question becomes, did it just need to ferment over the coarse of 80k years, or did it require the deaths of 50+ Shellys to form it?

If the latter, that just makes Jin’s newfound lease on life THAT much more disturbing (especially considering how at least one of those Shellys was her best friend in a previous cycle).

OTOH, if the existing V-cells were all in use powering the Earth-barrier, using one of them to make her mortal might have let in the aliens and other nefarious deified powers of the cosmos.

@scantronb: What fairportfan said. I too was under the impression what Brandi meant is that she knew where other V cells were, and that Shelly didn’t need to spend 80k years and several other versions of herself creating a new one.

@OBOH: I’m assuming if Brandi’s offering to donate one such V-cell to Jin, either the barrier can stand to loose one cell, or there are others in storage not actively powering the realm-barrier or some similar construct.

According to Wikipedia, some banks and chambers of commerce did issue wooden nickels during the 1930s, and there may have been some issued decades earlier.

They were not (as I understand it) U.S. legal tender, but were a form of private-tender currency… you could use them in certain areas or with certain merchants, and people might accept them as a form of change in those areas, but they weren’t good throughout the whole country.

In other words, they were a bit like subway tokens.

Wooden nickels were given out a lot by hardware stores and other local businesses as well, and were redeemable for a nickle’s worth of something on a future purchase. Since they were actually the size of a silver dollar, very few people would carry them, so they’d get shoved on the nightstand and end up useless.

The only wooden nickel I ever got was from a hardware store, they were dying out by the time I started paying attention.

A Zork reference? Not all that many of the current generation of gamers have ever played it… I’m not sure that the text-mode games are retro enough (yet) to have had a big second wave of popularity.

Working on Adventure (a.k.a. Colossal Cave) was my own foray into that… I did a 550-point interpreter-based extension to the original Crowther/Woods version. Fun stuff (and I did manage to sneak in a few egregious puns).

The alternator they used, was apparently built from May’s plans or design, but probably not by her… she didn’t recognize it when Bud brought it.

We don’t know who built the V cell that was used to power it up.

However, May is still a good guess, either for the V cell builder, or for whomever is speaking in the last frame. She’s an inventor, probably known to Euryale by reputation, and only recently released from demonspace… so E could easily be excited about meeting her.

The speaker might by Phix but I doubt it, due to Euryale’s reaction… I expect she’d already be used to meeting Phix in the Library.

Seeing how Maya created the calendar, it shouldn’t be/have been that difficult for her to create the necessary components of a V-cell then stash them throughout time and the world until they need to be assembled.

So was that the only one built recently or are there more hidden away in secret caches just waiting to be discovered?

        True ’nuff.

That drunkenness was artificially imposed… and many of her memories were being suppressed by her programming. In effect she was being forcibly held in the “giddy sophomore co-ed” state.

A lot has happened since then.

She’s been release from Tequila Mode. Her memories were restored (first temporarily and then more thoroughly) by Monica. She’s had time to come to terms with her realization that she was one of the destroyers of Lanthis and responsible for the death of thousands. She’s helped save Reality As We Know it at least once, crunching the Calendar Machine and rescuing Maya in the process. She’s quested (successfully) for a way to help Jin return to sanity… and seems to have come to terms with the implications of Jin’s restoration to a moral form.

In short… I think Bud’s grown up a lot since we first met her.

We may be seeing her behaving much as we might have seen “flesh and blood farm-girl Acacia” grown to adulthood, if that had been allowed to occur long ago.

Wow, Acacia (Bud) definitely is looking very nice. No ‘Straw hair’ here. Maybe Monica’s been spending “girly time” w/her giving her beauty tips & such like she did with Shelly.
Plus Acacia sounds prettier than “BUD”.
ANYWAY on second look Yes there is a new person on the scene as Monica and Euryaleare are both looking BEHIND them and Acacia is IN FRONT of them.
OOooooh! I know….. Its TINA! – but NOT Tina because someone else is “at the helm” so to speak. Just puttin’ it out there. OK Discuss.

More than just beauty tips. Bud seems to have “come through the storm” and have arrived at some sort of inner peace, at least for now. Good to see!

On the new speaker… candidates offered up so far seem to be May, Shelly, Phix, Nudge, Brandi, and Tina… or it might be a new player, or some minor character out of left field. Tepoz seems possible as he was apparently part of MIB and might have been holding onto secrets.

…and I went back two pages and read the comments. I am now severely intimidated by you guys.

In an effort to quit breaking the internet and simultaneously graduate from college, I’m in a basic html/css class right now. I’m not doing that well (hey, it’s me!). I’d have never guessed unclosed center tags were making that kind of problem.

As for the design issues, I’m with SoWhyMe on this, with a tiny addendum. The page looks like the Dreamweaver templates we’ve been working with in class, and depending how Paul has it set, it may take recreating the whole site to make the comments section wider. And the occasional unintentional haiku can be hilarious. ;)

Anyway, thanks to all of you for your help and (tech) support. :D
