I can tell that the monsters are still working on that whole “civilized society” thing, because if they were a civilized society, then Briar would have a full-time professional caretaker in charge of protecting her from accidental self-harm, rather than leaving it all up to the possibility of well-intentioned and vaguely competent volunteers.
Perhaps there is more to explain that will make this more credible, but for now, I’m flatly gazing at this over the top of my glasses and raising an eyebrow.
There is no way in hell that Briar is capable of dealing with school without a competent companion to be with her full-time. This is beyond anything she can “learn by experience” which seems to be the way the school wants to deal with her.
To be faaaaaaair…monster society seems to have evolved rather quickly and rather recently, so not to long ago, people like briar would have left in the woods as defective merchandise to adapt or die, but now are being raised and allowed to go to school to adapt or die (mostly socially). So, progress, I guess? Yay?
I dunno. I do know that any fantasy world completely breaks if you examine the mechanics or question the fundamental assumptions too much. Comic book superheroes make no sense, Harry Potter is untenable, and even LotR has major conceptual holes, despite all the reams of world-building Tolkien did. The Wapsiverse is no different. If you start pokng holes or tugging threads, the whole fabric unravels quickly.
So let’s not worry too much about the improbability of the character existing as-is, or the nature of her challenges, or even the level of supervision given–that’s all part-and-parcel of the handwaviness that allows a fantasy setting. Let’s just judge the character on her own merits. Hopefully she’ll show us some soon.
English is one of those languages that is noted as ‘dynamic’. (it is always changing)
Many other languages are noted as ‘static’.
For example… FRENCH is estimated to have only 60K words and is not reducing or growing.
ENGLISH was recently estimated to have 30 MILLION words and growing at a minimum of 1% per year.
English doesn’t “borrow” from other languages: it follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar and valuable vocabulary. Paul Ingraham
