I’m anxious to see how her personality change and apparent amnesia are explained to her friends and loved ones.
“You know how Shelly gets herself under those darn bowling balls! Well, ha ha, it was a big one this time! Really big bowling ball, yessir.”
Since when have you been interested in character arcs that are like that?
But seriously, anxious is the word. They’ve been riding on their Scoobypowers for quite awhile, and have only entrusted their secrets to civilians who care deeply about them. Shelly’s bf is a cop– and any suspicious change in her behavior may arouse him in an entirely unhappy way.
I mean, they now guard a weapon of mass destruction that can’t hide behind a Social Security number. That’s been known to upset the mundanes.
Now, what I really want to know is…
…am I the only one who forgot it was Friday and showed up here at 12:02 (or various time zone counterparts) looking for “tomorrow’s” installment?
Nah, checking for comment-updates is not total regression…
By the by..what a shitty day: No rapture, still lots of annoying religious people around. Had JW at the door. I asked why..what was the use 🙄 Stumped them somewhat. Are they oblivious to popular media 😕
My name is Ratcatcher, um, no . . . Richard and I’ve been known to check multiple times on the weekend. And I normally read the comics for a week on Friday. I’m a binging addict!
Hi, My name is … my name isn’t important … I just wanted to point out another aspect of Wapsi addiction. When everything you see relates, in some way, to the Wapsiverse.
My last name is Kramer, and not only do I check Wapsi on the weekdays, nights, and ends, I make multiple new threads in the comments, I think constantly about the plot and any new connections I can come up with, as well as attempting to predict what is going to happen. Honestly it’s getting to the point that I spend more time here than on facebook…
My last name is Kramer, and I am obsessed with Wapsi Square. 😛 (honestly, it could be worse, at least here we get mental stimulation and good literature)
I thought that sphinx looked familiar, but I tacked it to Paul’s art style. Now I can’t say anything cause you’d just think I picked up on that only after Shelly got back.
On the other hand, Shelly is pretty damned old now. Right?
Oh wait. You’re going to be at the con. Which is where I would be but things got a little hectic around here recently and now I can’t go.
Save me a smile and a hearty handshake for the next time, okay?
I’d say that in the first two panels it’s the hair and the towel that make her look older. They make her look dumpy. I could interpret it as either older or (except for the boobs) much younger. The bottom panel would be the same, except angrier.
Now You mention it. She looks mainly worn and very VERY tired. There is nothing of her usual spunkyness left.
Poor Shelly. She’ll have to learn to enjoy life allover again. 😐
Hence my suggestion of Tina {chief member of the club of sunshine-up-ass-blowers} as her friend and confidante, despite Shelly’s (possible) Sphinxstinct.
Usual spunkyness? She is often not spunky. To me, she and especially CLG look about the same there as today. The characters have a lot of variability, actually. Shelly has been through a lot and sometimes it shows, even before today.
I’d call that spunky, but hey, opinions differ.
Usually her face has some sort of a twinkle in the eyes. (barring the moments that she goes bully…)
She’s a noisy airhead (op acts as one) exactly because her inside is so dark.
At the moment she’s just looking tired and craggy. She”ll get her “normal” face back when all happenings have sunk in ,and found their place. She has indeed been through a lot , and is probably somewhat in shock that she’s actually back. It –how do You say that– reflects good on her (??? I knew the saying, but due to my medication, I have a hard time remembering words and such) that she immediately switches to warning Monica, instead of just sitting there and feeling sorry for herself (however much she has the right to..)
That’s my vision, and I am sticking to it. Pflprprprprprpt 😛
I wanted to say that Shelly wasn’t like Jacqui, but I forgot her name (and still don’t know if I spelled it right), but obviously Shelly isn’t normally as reserved as Katherine usually is, either.
And I managed to put it in the wrong branch. Well, hopefully they won’t get separated, but I was thanking Jay-Em for revealing the secret behind the 😕 smiley.
At least it gives me a chance to try to do this correctly:
It’s certainly appropriate ATM 🙄
DOH! I realized something! (That happens occasionally. Really.) I’ve seen it before, but I didn’t appreciate it at the time. If you copy a comment that includes smileys, then you paste it into your comment (or into a text editor), any codes for the smileys in the comment are right there. There is no need to ask. 😀
I gots me a list of wordpress smileys pasted on my desktop for easy eference (yup ,I am lazy&practical like that) You’ll find it here (Full link, because HTML-linking this adress makes WordPress go haywire for some odd reason) :
What I’m looking forward to is Jin’s reaction to the fulfillment of Shelly’s responsibility to the relic.
If she was referencing the Sacred Grove incident in not being friends ‘this time’, being the time she had to sit alone for 81,000 years.
Jin now owes Shelly a debt beyond any payment. And if Shelly realizes that Jin let this happen, no matter how needed, what will her reaction be to that?
Letting the girl with abandonment issues sit alone for that length of time only to have one visitor every 1450 years that she has to shuffle off to the next step of fixing the relic. If that was one of the merciful times.
The most intersenting question (to me at least) is, will Shelly lash-out in anger to Jin, or will she have learnt some solemn coping during these 81000 years, and allow herself to grieve the lost years.
IMHO She could come out of this a very sage and deeply wise person (as a sphinx should be) The moments she let herself settle and think, she could be amazingly insightful. She already had it in her.
I am really looking forward to the developments in Shelly’s character ,especially how Amanda will deal with the person she initially couldn’t stand. Or Lucy, for that matter.
That and, again an IMHO, there must be different personalities amongst the sphinx’s, just as there are in people. Shelly’s never been the studious kind, but you couldn’t go through what she did and not pick up some kind of wisdom.
You don’t vote for the artist. You are voting for the story and the art. The ranking helps keep the strip important to the people that sell the advertising. The higher the numbers the more likely they are to keep Wapsi going.
You have your right to like or dislike who you will, but don’t let those feeling get in the way of helping the strip.
And yours, Fairportfan. However, until I’m banned, which could be any time now, the light of my comments will continue to illuminate the dark recesses of the Wapsiverse.
Quoting Nudge “I get people to look at things differently. In ways they might not want to … even if it does make me an enemy.”
Oh, I used to help the strip every chance I got, Jabberwonky. Talked it up in chats all the time, voted often as I could. Even had a link on my webpage. And for my efforts I was presented with an extremely nasty and hateful post. The kind of post that, if someone else had said it to another poster, would probably have gotten them banned. Anyway, that was it. I’m helping the comic by logging on and slightly improving page hits. That’s the extend of my support now.
I was presented with an extremely nasty and hateful post. The kind of post that, if someone else had said it to another poster, would probably have gotten them banned.
Would that have been when you said something snarky in response to something i posted that mentioned my granddaughter … and Paul deleted your post … and explained exactly when you asked?
As i remember it, he was rather nicer about that than i would have been.
And you seem to have a problem with comic artists in general – i remember you referring to Brooke McEldowney as an “arrogant blowhard”.
see below on this thread for my reason to answer SoWhyMe, (for some reason the comment has no visible reply button). I for one enjoy most of your comments. They are direct, honest (I think), and do not bow to the great God of PC Thought. I’m a bit of a hillbilly/hick, and I think that I’ve got a PC allergy. You keep writing and I’ll keep reading, with the occasional idle thought as to strangulation, or other massively uncivil retaliation for my hurt feelings. But nobody I know of ever died from such irritation as that.
Be yourself. Best advice I ever got from my father, now sent from me to you. Have at it sir! and don’t hold back on my account.
Agreed with what you said … which is why i usuallytry not to be snarky to others.
But occasionally, something hits me just wrong – generally something of the “didn’t-need-to-say-that” variety; the sort of thing that can sound as if it’s intended as an offensive jab.
As to the “Reply” button – this forum can only nest replies about three deep; after that you have to hunt up the thread for the last one that has a live “Reply” button.
Well, the majority opinion seems to be that Shelly will exhibit sphinx instincts and pounce on Tina. I just think that Tina is overreacting. Her reaction is a very good story-line enabler, bearing witness to Bud and Monica, but it need not go further than that.
Not really “contrary” I’d say. We hope for pouncing-madness&hilarity, but most of us basically realize it’s pretty unlikely.
Monica has do go “double-duty-Mom” on Shelly’s confusion, and Tina’s panic. SHe’ll be pretty busy. I hope Brandi can help somehow, motherly-type she is.
Hmmmm..oooh yeah, forgot about Amanda. I believe it was Nudge that wanted to involve Amanda. That might have gotten Phix to recognize something as the handiwork of Nudge. (where is she..I miss the little pain in the rear…)

There were a few earthquakes..poor turkey…but i was watching this site for earthquake updates and well..was nothing to the scale the guy said we would get 🙂

oh and that site link is set to +4 earthquakes. turkey had millions but they were all under that manitude 🙂
there is a link on the page which shows all the earthquakes of all magnitude.
kinda puts things into perspective when you see how many we do get and how many get reported.
Maybe it was a silent Rapture. That the people who were removed were erased from our collective memories. Problem is, that would mean the preacher who predicted it all didn’t make the cut. Nor, apparently did his most devoted followers. As far as I know they’re all still among us terrible sinners sailing through the universe on spaceship earth. Well, better luck next Rapture.
couple of days ago i realised that when the calender machine was put into the demon realm it was taken out of existance/reality/our timeline.
now with shelly going into the forest via relic she would have also been taken out of the timeline at that point. (not forever as she would have returned but the anomoly would have remained)
so my theory is that shellinx was actually preventing a paradox from occuring by letting all the shelly’s die (i assume) so as to close each reoccuring anomoly in each existance.
ALSO i assume that the library is similar to the forest as it is outside of our existance/time/etc
now phix acts as though this is the first time she has met monica and the crew (even if she does have alot of knowlege) so i suspect they never entered the library in the previous go arounds.
THAT also said means that with the calender out of existance – the previous 56 tries never happened.
(hence the shelly anomoly which shellinx fixed)
i suspect that because jin/brandi/bud are golem, they arn’t ‘tied’ to this timeline and any ventures into other places wouldn’t affect this timeline.
I’m sorry, but that would create a whole new set of paradoxes. If Shelly remembers meeting the previous versions of herself the loops must have happened. Also Jin remembered the previous loops, if not perfectly. Phix had books written by Jin and Brandi which recorded what happened in the previous loops and she told Brandi and possibly Monica how many loops there had been. Phix was even able to tell Brandi how Brandi had behaved in the previous attempts. Assuming the Shellys always brought the relic with them when they went to the Sacred Forest, a bunch of the relics should have accumulated there if the Shellys died there and killing the Shellys wouldn’t have solved that problem. You would still have the dead Shellys in the wrong place, too.
I don’t think you can judge anything by how Phix treated Monica and Shelly. Remember, it was just an act. Secondly, Monica and Shelly didn’t have the same roles in the previous attempts, so they might not have been to the library during the other loops.
This may have already been put forth, but bear with me… I’m rather lost with the whole “backwards-forwards, here-there, first-last” time bit, but it sounded like Shelly came to the world and was trapped there, while the sphinx (who had come to the world as human and been trapped there ‘earlier’) finally managed to escape, and just happen to look identical to Shelly… It it possible that it’s a sort of loop? Shelly stays, becomes a sphinx, Shelly2 comes, Shelly leaves, etc., and that ‘Shellinx’ (or ‘Shellynx,’ whichever)is actually just an older version of Shelly?
I’m not sure what you are trying to say, but I don’t think that’s right. If you don’t want to read all of the comments (I wouldn’t blame you), just look for the ones Paul Taylor wrote over the last few days. Your web browser should make it easy to search for his name on each page.
Shelly was taken to a place where the time loop was still in effect. She was the last “Shelly” from the last time loop, but since time worked backwards in the pocket universe she was there first, before all her predecessors could come. She had to watch each version of herself from each previous iteration of the loop come there and, presumably, die, until finally we saw the second-to-last Shelly appear, finishing the countdown and allowing the final Shelly, our Shelly, who had by now evolved into a Sphinx, to return home.
No, I think it probably really was the second Shelly from the second time loop. We know there should have been 57 Shellys. Only 56 Shellys, including the Sphinx, showed up in the Sacred Forest, so one never got there. The most likely one to not go was the first one from the first loop, because she would be less likely to know that there was a reason to go.
I haven’t ruled out the possibility that it was a goof on Paul’s part because he didn’t sound real sure of the numbers in his comment on the matter, but the distinction between the 56 and 57 Shellys is what’s in the story now.
Think of Earth and Sacred Grove World as two sides of a divided highway. All the exit numbers go from AD 560 to AD 2011. On Earth, the exit numbers go up, but on Sacred Grove World, they go down.
Whenever a Shelly enters the Grove lane, she makes a U-Turn. To her, the arrow of time still moves forward. It’s just the lane pointing in the opposite direction.
A time loop complicates the metaphor, but imagine the Earth lane has construction detours on 56 (or 57) consecutive days. It’s always a little different, but the exits are the same.
Turns out the Sacred Grove Lane is just a restricted-access service road, and pulling a U-Turn onto it is kinda illegal.
On the last day of construction, Shelly pulls a U-Turn and discovers she has a career as a Sphinx traffic cop. She has to drive down the service road every day of construction, patrolling for intruders. But it’s always down close to Exit 2012 where she sets a lookout for herself.
This being a time highway instead of a space highway, Shellys from previous construction detours keep making U-Turns onto the service road. Despite their innocent explanations, Shelly the Sphinx enforces the law, and the Sacred Grove lane starts piling up with the previous Shelly’s discarded objects.
Once all the Calendar Machine’s construction detours are removed, the Earth lane becomes reconnected to the one-way one-lane superhighway to the future it was always meant to be.
The Sacred Grove lane is no longer needed, so Shelly the Sphinx’s traffic patrol career is over. She pulls another U-turn, bound for home.
I like the highway analogy. I always saw the time-line in Wapsi as a line, also. Not loops.
But I need you to explain the guys that, no matter when you pass through, are ALWAYS drinking coffee an smoking butts…

This has been foreshadowed. Oh, and check out the cute tshirt Shelly has on…
The ‘Good-Bye Kittie’ shirt has always been one of my favorite throw aways. Whenever I color a pic of Shelly, I try to slip it on her…
Now, what I really want to know is…

I’ve done that more than once.
My name is mike and i check for WS updates on Saturday…
My name is Jay ,and this week I haven’t looked for a saturday-update.
I am very proud of myself.

Yeah, it’s Jin’s reaction that I’m most interested in seeing. And as you said, Shelly’s reaction to her.
One would think of a sphinx as being sage and wise, but if Phix is any indication, that’s not something we could count on in the wapsiverse.

that just sums it all up really.
80k years. watching people die.
how’d you get over something like that?
peopleyourself.Either solipsism, coping, or an unwavering optimism I can imagine that ,at times, Shellinx went completely solipsistic..
And now a general announcement from the confusion-corner:
Don’t forget to vote
vote
I vote every single day, as I enter to read the strip or the comments, first thing, right off the bat, immediately, right away, highest priority.
Except when I forget.
I used to vote regularly, but not any more.
Why ever not? Just curious.
While I love the story and the art, I very much dislike the artist.
Fair enough.
I’m sure he’d be willing to forgo the pleasure of your comments.
You don’t vote for the artist. You are voting for the story and the art. The ranking helps keep the strip important to the people that sell the advertising. The higher the numbers the more likely they are to keep Wapsi going.

Since you seem to be determined to press the issue, it was this one:

Oh, and I stand by my assessment of Brooke.
No, it doesn’t have to be about me – that was the only time i could recall Paul saying anything snarky to anyone.
Having read his comment, i can’t say i blame him much. You do carp misogynistically on and on, seeing things that nbo-one else sees.
As to your opinion of McEldowney … you’re welcome to it.
It’s wrong, but you’re welcome to it.
You know, there used to be a regular poster over at Pibgorn who sounded a lot like you…
He came off like a whiney misogynist, too.

Just to be contrary, I don’t think that Shelly will have any desire to harm Tina. I think the instincts here are all on Tina’s side.
That’s being contrary?
Well, the majority opinion seems to be that Shelly will exhibit sphinx instincts and pounce on Tina. I just think that Tina is overreacting. Her reaction is a very good story-line enabler, bearing witness to Bud and Monica, but it need not go further than that.

Read it! Got a 😆 out of it.
I figured it was just that there were only six, maybe seven, people who made the cut worldwide…
Wow, hardly seems worth it. I guess God only took His poker buddies. I wonder if He Raptured enough beer?
Make sure to invite Tepoz…
couple of days ago i realised that when the calender machine was put into the demon realm it was taken out of existance/reality/our timeline.
now with shelly going into the forest via relic she would have also been taken out of the timeline at that point.
(hence the shelly anomoly which shellinx fixed)
i suspect that because jin/brandi/bud are golem, they arn’t ‘tied’ to this timeline and any ventures into other places wouldn’t affect this timeline.
anyway..any thoughts?
Of course, when I say “second to last” Shelly, I mean that she was the first Shelly from the first time loop. Forgive me if I’m being unclear.
That makes… perfect sense.
Of course, this is what I have to drive through every day.
Heh. I have to drive on US41 occasionally, too.
In Atlanta, Chattanooga, Nashville…
I like the highway analogy. I always saw the time-line in Wapsi as a line, also. Not loops.
But I need you to explain the guys that, no matter when you pass through, are ALWAYS drinking coffee an smoking butts…

Hope the bad weather passed over Paul’s house. Tornado in Minneapolis this afternoon.
He could be without power.
The tornado’s path was along the north-west ,just above StPaul (where he lives, or at least where his business is)
1 dead already ,and quite some damage.
