Kat is the obvious option, but that’s only because she’s already adopted. I think a new character would be cool, but my moneys on a character other than Kat taking Digit in. Like what about Kat’s girlfriend? Or that half-orc we saw who is seemingly unconnected to the story thus far? As for Dietzel, thats easy. Seems like half the cast can teleport one way or another. When Digits at school, Dietzel can hang with Monica. When Digits home, he can play with her. If they are both free, then they can work out a schedule of who gets to play with him what day. If they are both busy, then he’s no worse off than he was pre-crazy stuff where he was by himself when Monica was at work.
He can order pizza by himself, and if he can text, he can work the TV remote and access the Internet, at least he could do all that before he got shrunk, so he’s actually ahead of the curve for a dog home alone.
I’d kind of hope she stays with Monica. She’s been almost wholly absent from the comic for a long time now, having her back on the regular would be nice.
It’d also be interesting to see character development in a new area, too. however, it seems Digit is just as uninterested with Monica as it is the other way around.
I think that’d be a poor decision all in all, two teens is bad enough and as Dave said I’d like to actually see Monica more than once every 3-4 months(if that).
Problem is, as was pointed out yesterday. Kat HATES spiders. She only collected dead, taxidermied spiders as a way to try to work through her fear of them.
This is a huge chance to give Monica some character development and growth. She already thought she wasn’t ready to mentor Calista, and that seems to have worked out for the best, so……..
Some development for Monica, maybe actually getting to see Jet at all. I guess I’m still not entirely over the abrupt screeching U-turn in character focus, that and the relationship shakeup.
I beg your pardon sirrah! In what way is she neurotic? I’d say her concerns are justified. And its not as if she’s running around flailing like a muppet. She’s just trying to figure out a place to live, which is natural, where she can still be with her friends, which also natural. And in no way does her concern detract from her cuteness!
Actually, she’s doing a pretty good job analyzing the situation and trying to help make mature decisions that directly affect her new situation in life.
She’s not on the floor, curled up in a ball, stressing out because she suddenly has a completely different body and living situation than she’s used to, and she’s not having a hissy fit because “I DON’T WANT TO BE HUMAN!”
So how old was Digit in spider form when she put on the talisman? She has been a character in WS for roughly, what, 3 years now, which is long-lived for a spider of any kind. Her longevity is almost certainly due to the fact that she’s been living in the library.
When she became near-human, she manifested as a teenager.
Now, Dietzel has been around for as long as the strip, and for whatever reason, has barely aged. Most likely due to comic strip magic, where characters only age if it’s important to the story or convenient for the author, but a possible in-universe explanation is from being exposed to so much magic from hanging around Monica and the gang,
Now, and I’m only theorizing here, but what if Dietzel were to become near-human, either deliberately or accidentally? What age would he manifest as?
Could an adult near-human Dietzel step in and be a father figure for Digit?
I just noticed, have her lateral eyes (the small pair) been retconned? They may just be behind her’palps, but they are always at least partially visible in previous pages.
I think they’re behind the palps. Looking at the four pics Paul’s posted on eBay (from left to right) they’re not visible at all, sort of suggested {to the right}, definitely there though not particularly visible {to the left} and absolutely there.
What to do?
I’d ask Monica…
I’d ask Castela.
Hello, Cousin!

I agree with the idea of Katherine…she has always had a fondness for spiders, and she seems to be doing perfectly well with Castela and Atsali…

Something will be worked out, I think.
okay spider girl is no longer cute, shes neurotic…
Just like any other teen 🙂

She’s trying hard to adapt to her new life.
This page makes me want to see either Digit or Monica dressed as a pirate (prefferably Digit) with Dietzel dressed as her parrot.

Actually, now that I think about it, some tarantulas can live a good long time, but I’m not sure about whatever breed/species Digit is……..
Research tells me that for jumping spiders, a full year would be considered long-lived.
(I wish we could edit these comments after we’ve posted them)
On another note, she’s adjusting pretty well to the shock of suddenly transforming.
Well, she’s in the home where she’s lived most of her life, surrounded by people she’s known most of it, too.
That’s gotta take some of the stress off.
Right, but she’s also being forced to contemplate having to leave that home and start a totally new life.
I’m impressed that she hasn’t shown any of the clumsiness you’d expect from someone who suddenly has half the number of limbs she used to.
Another thought: What if she winds up as an emancipated minor? Could she take care of herself?
Of course, there’d still be the problem of finding housing and income.
Inefficient? The trick is to not bother saying anything at all, unless it’s worth taking a looong tiiime to saaay.
A tree told me that.
The…tree that knows stuff?
Fangorn
He’s right there on your shoulder when you said that, Digit.
Sounds like it’s time for a meeting of the Council of Aunts!
