    Here’s one you can’t guess…

    I’m black as pitch, yet shine like the sun…

    I weigh very little, yet am measured by the ton…

    I’m cool to the touch, yet burn fiercely hot…

    I have roots to the present, but in the past I do not…

    What am I?

        I’m going with Francisco. Its got to be Coal. Oil sounds close but the fact that it says its messured in tons leads to be a solid not liquid.

    It cannot be seen, cannot be smelt; Cannot be heard, cannot be felt. It hides behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills. It leads first and follows after and always hears peals of laughter…What is it?

      5 years later…I was wondering if this was received from the old Playstation game MediEvil…? Regardless, it’s either Silence or Darkness.

      • Tindi
        October 10, 2015, 10:23 pm | #

        It first popped up in The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien, which I suspect MediEvil stole it from; it’s been used a whole bunch in games and stuff.

        And, OLD alert: I always hum that one to the tune it was sung in the Rankin-Bass animated Hobbit movie. 😛

    Okay I have one. I stole it from a favorite book, so if you know the book don’t say it.

    “I turn my head one way and you may go where you want
    I turn it again and you will stay ’till you rot
    I have no face but I live or die
    By my crooked teeth – who am I?”

    another stolen one.
    This thing all things devours:
    Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
    Gnaws iron, bites steel;
    Grinds hard stones to meal;
    Slays king, ruins town,
    And beats high mountain down…

    I like the old English ones.

    Here’s one:

    A marvel hangs from a man at his thigh,
    Beneath his tunic. There’s a hole in the tip;
    It’s stiff and hard as he sticks it in,
    When this lad lifts his clothes
    Up to his waist, he wants to greet
    The familiar hole with his dangle’s head
    Which he often before has filled for a while.

    From http://www.historicalarts.co.uk/translation/oeriddles.html. However, the answer on that page so see if you can answer it without looking up the answer.

      Clue:

      Looking at this again, we should note that the general design of this has changed slightly over the centuries but, in many cases, the description does still fit.

        This is a very big clue and I’m not sure if I should give it to you. You’ll be able to work out what is being described if you look at the Jorvic Viking Museum’s website.

        Wrong.

        Sorry, but you fell into the trap they set. It’s meant to sound like that but it’s not.

        I did give a big clue in saying:

        Looking at this again, we should note that the general design of this has changed slightly over the centuries but, in many cases, the description does still fit.

        The human body hasn’t changed that much in the last thousand years.

    “There’s someone that I’m always near, yet in the dark, I disappear.
    To this one only am I loyal, though in his wake I’m doomed to toil.
    He feels me not, but we always touch. If I were lost, he’d not lose much.
    But now I come to my surprise: for you are he, but who am I?”
