Mmmhmm… if you’re constantly and disproportionately angry at all the people who get in your way, slow you down, or annoy you, mostly in the course of just going about their own business… then the asshole is probably YOU.
It’s not so bad. Dennis Leary even wrote you a song! ^_^
Looking at one’s own assholery in the mirror can be quite a shock. But as hard as it is, just recognizing it is only the first step. The tough part is figuring out what old pains and burdens and injuries one is lugging around that make being an asshole – and the concomitant price thereof – less painful than dealing with them.
And, her defense, Monica has plenty of legitimate old pains to deal with. She really did have a thoroughly screwed-up childhood, thanks to the visions and Glyph-reader skills that Mayahuel foisted upon her. Apparent hallucinations, a family and friends that didn’t believe her, a nearly-successful suicide attempt, commitment to a mental hospital where she was repeated raped, self-cutting, keeping the rape secret for all those years… not good. Her adulthood hasn’t been all that much better: a “necessary betrayal” and stabbing-in-the-head by friends during the Calendar Machine incident, elevation to immortality and sub-Titan status as a consequence.
And, who the hell can she talk to about it? Who has sufficient knowledge and information to discuss it with her meaningfully, and enough moral authority to give her a jolt when she needs it? Damned few mortals (Georgette being one of the few); most of the paras that she could consult, are already too entangled with her current situation and have their own agendas. Phix simply told her (in effect) “stop whining and deal with it.”
So, she’s got a tough row to hoe here, even after ‘Jet has called her on her bullshit.
(Did anybody else flash on the closing scenes of “Blazing Saddles” when ‘Jet spoke?)
Gotta admit, have never been a fan of the whole Georgette and Monica relation. That whole sequence seemed randomly, painfully contrived to me and it’s the only time in all my years of reading WS I ever considered stopping, if only briefly.
BUT
She’s good for her. M has issues and will always have issues and sometimes those issues need a sharp spearing and a reality check. Georgette is delivering that in spades.
To be fair, most people in major metropolitan areas suck at driving.
If it were up to me, everybody in the KC area (both states) would have to take a written and driven exam°. Depending on how they performed would determine if their license remained valid, if they had to retake drivers ed, or if their car was cubed in front of them and their license was permanently revoked.
Granted, Kansas City did finally manage to break it’s decades long streak of top 10 worst cities to drive in last year (still made top 20).
°On that note, I do feel that retaking the written exam should be required each time you renew your license. Fail 3 times, retake drivers ed.
Gyrre the problem with your theory is most people KNOW the book answers, They just don’t apply in the real world. You can post the speed limit at 65 on a major high way all you want. Ain’t nobody going to pay attention. You can say passing on the right is illegal. Ain’t NOBODY gives two poops. You put all the rules you want on paper. Reality has nothing to do with what’s on the paper except in a casual sense and if a cop deigns to stop you over it.
Can remember an old Goofy cartoon about how a mild mannered pedestrian turns into a foaming-at-the-mouth road-rager as soon as they get behind the wheel
based on yesterday’s and today’s strips I was pleased to find myself noting that there still seems to be some Monica character development to be found around here.
There was a time, during the intro of the WS:TNG generation espicially that it was at least partly assumed Monica had been ‘bussed’ off-screen due to her having topped-out as a character. As in “She’s the Jaguar Girl, what the frack do I do with her NOW?”
What does she do with herself now? What does the process of “really growing up” look like, in a human who is now effectively immortal?
That would be an interesting question for anyone. For someone like Monica, who has a big history of trauma, an occasional log-sized chip in her shoulder, and vast powers… let’s say there appears to be plenty of potential for interesting character evolution.

But does she wear a leather jacket in summer to ask “how about this heat?”

Yes to all points.
Using Cricket as the “mirror” was right on target, because Monica already knows how much those two have in common: http://wapsisquare.com/comic/such-a-screw-up/

So true, The Old Wolf!
That’s a “gotcha” for sure.
Sauce for the goose…
Been assuming too much?
Jaw, meet floor.
wow someone is being gently hit with the uncomfortable psychological reveals hammer.

Yups, was just about to type something similar

I have a theory with some evidence for it but not enough to be a Theory.
Very few people are stupid (but we can substitute assholes by Monica’s definition). They’re actually just distracted by their own lives.
And cat pictures on the phone. You can’t forget those
and you forgot to add “…while driving”

typo city… , on my part that is. Well, to answer your semi-rhetorical question:
Monica Goes Into Space. natch’.
The final frontier?
Dave – see https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/2041:_Frontiers ab9ut “final frontiers”…

Jet is the best that ever happened to MonMon 😀
She don’t take no shit from her, butt she doesn’t just attack her either
Just realized this was a Friday post and it’ll be up all weekend. Been so long since the week ended with a strip, I’ve forgotten what it’s like…
Here is a recent pallet cleanser fer ya…
