Ummm … did you say something?

Something seems to have distracted me for a minute there…

Go back a few comics when you’re done ogling M’s profile. “Naive and a pushover” should ring a few bells…

        A *few* comics? Yeek… someone has eidetic memory… 😯

Heh, I noticed that, too. (Mostly because I re-read the old stuff quite often. I must admit, I miss the old strips.)

      • jwhouk
        December 8, 2009, 6:29 pm | #

Actually, if you look back a few days in the comments for the strip on Nov. 23, 25, 26 and Dec. 2… you’ll see why I alluded to strip #1.

Yay for the first strip! And…ya know? Some times I like the old character designs better than the new. More definition now but, I dunno. I’m a little weird. Love em both, though!

Given Monica’s small overall size and uneven distribution of mass (more above the middle than below it), if she did fire that thing she’d likely flip over backward…

No, we’d just have Latina wall art with an embedded Colt .45 revolver.

        December 8, 2009, 7:43 am | #

Actually, the revolver’s profile, along with the number and location of the sideplate screws, indicate an old Smith & Wesson. The size combined with the lanyard loop under the grip would lead me to guess a military surplus M1917 or its civilian counterpart.

Outstanding! .45 ACP in half moon clips or.45 Auto Rim.

        December 27, 2009, 5:20 pm | #

.45 ACP with the half moon clips.

      • KaiserFrazer67
        July 24, 2010, 1:01 am | #

YES!!! I KNEW IT!! Mostly ’cause my Dad had one, a M1917 in .45 ACP. They did make a rimmed version of the cartridge (.45 Auto Rim) for these revolvers for many years. And they aren’t bad to shoot, actually; their size counters the recoil somewhat, and they have less power than a .357 Mag or .44 Mag.

      • Linux Learner
        December 11, 2010, 7:18 am | #

Ayup. The bore may be huge, and the slugs as well, but 45ACP is low velocity.

compare to .45 GAP, a .45 cartridge with the length (and chamber pressure!) of 9mm Para.

Yikes, the arms race has just significantly escalated here. If Shelly is just going to stab M in the arm, she had better stab her shootin’ arm. Granted only one person in this scenario is capable of being shot, but that one person is Shelly, and I am not sure if Monica could handle that, should it happen.

But would M bring a gun to a knife fight? And would it be effective if she did?

      Doubt whispers in the ear.

I don’t know if you’ve been reading this comic long, but there aren’t exactly any important or remotely believable male characters in here. Tyler Perry writes better bros.

M’s not really going to pack heat when she goes to the calendar, is she? Where is she going to hide something that big (and don’t say “her cleavage”)? I think she’s just playacting to build up her confidence.

    Not bad. Goooo Monica! 😀

But the first thing when I saw the gun was wondering, is it a CO2 gun or some other gun (Airsoft, etc) ‘cos of the hinge swivel thingy at the bottom of the grip.

    • Paul Taylor
      December 8, 2009, 9:15 am | # | Reply

It’s an early S&W 1917 army revolver, the swivel on the grip is a lanyard ring so officers wouldn’t lose their sidearm if things got rough.

Wow. The punchline to a brick joke (“Despite the name, it’s not always a joke”) – a mere 8 years and 3 months after the fact.

Oddly enough, just a couple weeks ago, Dan Shive did a similarly-long-delayed joke: The 19 November El Goonish Shive finishes with a Brick Joke referring to the EGS strip from 10 July, ’03. (Granted, if Dan hadn’t pointed it out in his commentary on the recent strip, i might not have noticed…)

Yeah, see, I have to confess I didn’t read his comments on most of his comics, and I knew the line had some importance beyond simply remarking her own spontaneous color change, but just this day I realized what went on, thanks to your links. So I guess I’m saying thank you? And also saying that perhaps others should check out EGS when in their spare time from reading Wapsi Square. Though I’m sure there’s more than a few already reading both. Also, through the archives, you’ll get to see a major shift in artistic ability, as in Wapsi Square. And I do not mean that as a back handed compliment because the art was good anyway, and has gotten better, as compared to some comics just using stick figures. ;P (But those comics usually have other merits to them.)

    Oh, my.

Monica, in a bra and jeans, with a pistol…

I think you have another wallpaper here. Or print. Or statuette. Or all three…

It’s the expression, though, that really sells it. You have a gift for faces that makes this comic sing.

Interesting – when i tries to post a comment, just now, referring to the “TV Tropes” page called “V*ctor*a’s Secret Compartment”, i guess the post got bounced as spam because of the brand name, ‘cos when i resubmitted it with different phrasing, it went right up.

    Pistol+bra+jeans=serious business.

Although, if she was about to shoot me, having that as the last thing I saw would not be so bad.

This may be one of those times when we get a bit of cheesecake before it gets all stabby and chaotic. Think Chun Li’s shower scene in the animated Street Fighter movie right before she’s attacked by Vega.

Am I the only one who remembers her Grampa’s pistol? The one she’s had up in the attic for the entire run of the strip and hasn’t been mentioned in years? Chekov would be proud; it was introduced long ago, when Monica was looking for something else, and now the pistol itself shows up again.

Remember Monica, the gun doesn’t evoke fear, it never has; its the person HOLDING the gun that does…

In this case, the one holding the gun is evoking many things besides fear.
