If you’ve ever been in M’s position (and I have) then long ass hair constantly gets in the way – swimming is impossible without 2 cards’ worth of bobbypins and/or a super economy sized swimcap – and can give you neck pain if it’s thick and wiry like hers apparently was. Her hair was nearly as long as she was tall – try pinning nearly 5 feet length of thick rope to your own head some time and see if you’d want that hanging off the back of your head all day. I can guarantee it’d be a ‘hell no’ response.

Well, 5 feet is a bit excessive. Down to your waist or butt should be good.

Waist or butt is still excessive if the hair is thick enough and apparently wiry enough. Monica’s 4’11″, so hair down to her butt would probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2’5″. That’s still a ton of hair.

I like Alex-chan’s idea. All of the men out there who think women should have waist or butt-length hair should wear rope wigs that long for a day or more and see how their necks enjoy the added weight.

Personally, I don’t need the wig. I am currently in the process of growing it naturally for the third time to that length, at which time it will be donated if my depression phases don’t wreck it again like last time. LoL got it the first time, but the last time my GF’s mother died when it was almost the right length, and I didn’t take care of it for the next 6 months. I had splits over half way up…worthless.

Beauty may require sacrifice, but I think that men who expect certain aspects of “beauty” from the women they are around or with or interested in or whatever should have to spend at least a week going through all of the steps invloved as well.

Oh…and they’re not allowed to complain about how long it takes women to get ready either.

Sorry…this happens to be a bit of a sore point for me.

I totally agree with your last post, and please don’t apologize to men with unrealistic expectations. I have also been there, and I have to say that the most hurtful thing a male friend said to me about my new, extremely short cut a few years ago was something along the lines of, “Hey, it looks ok but I think long hair looks better.” It doesn’t really sound that bad, but it stings to hear it. Like, ok, I’ll just go ahead and grow it all back tonight, then, to suit your completely arbitrary notion of femininity?

Not saying a guy’s not allowed to dislike a haircut on someone, but for some reason this seems to be the only situation in which it’s (apparently) socially acceptable for a dude to insult a woman’s choice in appearance with impunity.

            (ramblerambleramble)

            (sore spot for me too)

Fine, then never, never ask us what we think about it (or if you look fat in it). Because, if you ask, be prepared for an answer you won’t like. Regardless, you will always disappoint some people with any change. That’s human nature. Because it thrills you, don’t think it will anyone else.

I agree though, it takes what it takes to achieve that “natural” look of beauty. The man will just have to be patient and not complain if that’s what he wants. Not that it’s always men. Many women simply like looking nice and would not have it any other way.

Heck, the first time I got right up close to a woman’s face who wore makeup, I was disgusted, bordering on nausea, to see it for what it really was. That stuff only looks good from a distance.

Heh…I’m perfectly willing to accept an honest opinion when I ask for one. Like M here, my sore spot is because I didn’t ask for that honest opinion.

I had my “lack of feminine beauty” rubbed in my face since I didn’t jump through the hoops that particular man wanted his female companions to jump through (i.e. curl my hair into ringlets and wear make up all the time when my hair is naturally straight, and I dislike wearing make up).

          • M
            M
            August 25, 2010 at 10:57 pm | #

Ah, Julie, that sounds like a more hurtful scenario than what I experienced, which was mostly just tacky. I found the exact message, sent to me after I posted a picture of the new ‘do:

“Cute always but I like the long hair but you look cool in the short hair too.”

Relatively innocent but still like… what? Who asked you? If you can’t say anything nice…

And the same guy a year later, on another photo I posted (after I had let my hair start to come back in):

“Lovely. Your hair is growing back too.”

It’s like… both are somehow phrased as compliments but both seem… judgmental. Both comments are made within a context of a man volunteering judgment on a woman’s appearance, completely unasked, and feeling entitled to do so because society says it’s ok.

I don’t know. It’s like, if you don’t like my hair short, good for you. Now please go to hell.

            P.S. Monica looks awesome
P.P.S. Is anyone even reading these anymore?

Not to mention the plate of bobby pins hidden under the mess and.. like the stylist said, it’d gotten wiry and was likely somewhat unpleasant. Lots of tangles, which are easy to get, making brushing a pain..

Frankly, I’ve been thinking of following M’s example of late. My nieces like playing with it, though…

Also, all of that hair would get hot in the summertime. Also, I suppose sometime people just want to make a change.

For Paul, it’s probably easier to draw.

Wow. Caused more of a stir then I thought would.

That said, long hair (like most things that requires time and dedication) looks good. Yes, I know longer hair is a pain. I’m a male who used to have hair down his back in high school. And yes, you feel about thirty pounds lighter. And no. Nobody expects it. Actually, it depends on your head and neck shape, but there are women who look good bald (Demi Moore), or with stubble (Natalie Portman) or with long flowing locks (Sinead O’connor, believe it or not)

That said, I originally was going for a ‘what men say to women/what they think’ vibe. To whit, yes, we accept that long hair is a pain. But it usually looks damn good.

She has some ‘defining’ characteristics that should help keep down any gender confusion! I have a friend that did the same thing, but the stylist was pretty bad. Poor girl was mistaken for a 13 year old boy D: Then she found a better stylist and, WOW, it really worked for her.

Don’t get me wrong — a good short cut rocks with some women – those with finer, more delicate features especially. Actress Janine Turner (Northern Exposure) being a more extreme case in my opinion — totally hot and awesome in the short cut – totally meh with longer hair.

I think Kevin is going to think he’s fallen into a bizarro world when he gets back.

@ Althestane: I agree; short hair is especially easy to screw up. When I saw the words “pixie cut” yesterday, I was not pleased; Goggle-imaging that term turned up a bunch of moppy rat’s nests that I did NOT feel were AT ALL attractive. Short hair on a woman can be either very butch or very feminine, depending on how it’s done–or drawn, for that matter. At least Pablo didn’t make it look sloppy.

Don’t forget that, changing seasons to match posting date notwithstanding, and barring a time jump between arcs, it really hasn’t been that long in Wapsi time. I guess that the 2.5 real-year time machine arc lasted only a couple weeks. Kevin’s assignment could take over six months if travel between countries is necessary.

Besides, not all day-to-day activities warrant situations suitable for humor. While they can be most interesting when you are doing them yourself, to an outside observer it can get redundant, especially if they don’t affect the story line.

Ah, the pixie cut! Being a guy, I’ve never had to deal with extremely long hair myself, but now that what hair I had is going stealth, it’s even less of a problem. Long hair can look great (but it’s a pain to care for), and short hair can look great (and it’s a whole lot easier to handle); it’s all in the cut.

Thanks for keeping things fresh, Pablo!

You and I both read it in school for the same reason: It was part of American Lit class. And it was a lot easier to read than the author’s other major work. Some novel about a rich guy from East Egg, Long Island.

That looks precious on her! :) I’ve always been super jealous of women who could pull off the pixie look. It may be partly in the cut, but it’s also partly in the shape of the face wearing the cut. Monica’s got what it takes to wear that look well.

I think it looks good the way Paul drew it, but I’m not sure how it would look with her coloring. If she had black hair, it would work, but I don’t know about brown hair with fairly dark skin. Highlights would probably help.

I agree on the ‘auburn’ definition of her color. That said, I’d never noticed that hair color affected my perception of whether or not a cut looked good on a person. Usually I just decide whether or not I like the color on the person separate from the cut.

Thelma and Louise is a very misandric movie from what i have read of it. There are many such movies. I have not seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo either, however I have read a detailed description of the plot, and while it has misogynistic aspects to it, it also has misandric aspects. Still I wonder if things are often labeled as misogynistic when, in fact, it’s just the mistreatment of certain females. John Carpenter,”Vampires” , for example, got the misogynistic label because of the cruel treatment of one female vampire.

To be fair, in this culture, men are told to tell women what they want to hear. So no honest opinion there.

As you friendly neighborhood Kiowa/Comanche, and as someone who used to have long hair (unbraided, it was down to my waist), I can rightfully say there will be a period of adjustment. But, she never had to get the questions I did as a young boy:
Why do you wear your hair like that? It looks like a girl’s hairdo!
    Is it a religon thing?
(barely tugging on the end of a braid) Does this hurt?
Usually the last question was, Do you get a lot of stupid questions about having long hair? They kind of answered that one in their heads as they ask it, and end the conversation right then.

That being said, I like the new look. Any hairdo can be called “Give It A Few Months”, but I wouldn’t mind if she kept it.

I may be the minority but I have to disagree… What’s with all the ladies in this strip cutting their hair? While I can see Monica having a shorter hair cut this “pixie” cut is not for me… I’ve never been partial to women with boy haircuts in the first place… Shelley’s I could deal with but I fear there will be much cringing in my readership until it grows back…

From someone’s who’s been in M’s position, I can vouch that when you have to move your hair out of the way to use the restroom, it’s time to cut it! Or when sitting in a chair and you lean forward and get jerked back because your hair is trapped between your body & the back of the chair… *sigh*

I didn’t chop mine to complete pixie, but I chopped mine to chin-length. It look time to get used to it, and I’m growing it back out again (it’s about mid-back right now) , but it was a nice & needed change.

I dunno. If M’s hair is straight and thick (like mine) it may grow quite fast. I usually stop getting haircuts in early October, and in mid-March when I start getting haircuts again, I cut off about 18 inches to go back to summer length.

My girlfriend is jealous. She says my scalp is wasted on a guy. I say she’s welcome to pay for the weekly haircut six months a year if she wants a scalp like mine.

I haven’t let it grow to butt length since I graduated college. My sister had knee-length hair for a while but she cut it; says it was too much trouble to keep.

I think Monica looks great with short hair. I’m eye-rolling a bit at the “boy hair” comments, though; as if short hair is the domain of guys only. Or the idea that women must have long hair. It’s not as if men’s hair stops growing at 1″ naturally.
