Locally it is very popular with the lesbian community, and the female triathletes. I don’t know how much overlap there is between the two groups not having done the Venn diagram. ;)

Well, she IS a personal trainer, so as a fitness proffesional she would have seen others wearing it. I’m just suprised how quick she got over that cold. But her metabolism’s bound to be faster than mine.

Must be a new trend, Seems like winter would be the worst time to cut off a major portion of your hair though. A sign of being “tough” I guess. Looks stupid and unattractive, but then most of these sorts of fads do. And like most fads, it’ll soon pass.

Wow, I take a huge offense to these comments. The hair-style is called an under-cut. It’s nice for girls with thicker hair or who don’t bother messing with it much. My boyfriend likes my hair like this very much. It’s not to look tough, ugly or like a lesbian. it’s because I like it. I would have thought people reading this comic would be slightly more open-minded. I don’t feel it’s a fad as I’ve seen girls with this hair cut since the mid-nineties.

Being open minded does not mean one has to go along with whatever comes down the path. Just because you like it, doesn’t mean everyone does. We express our opinions on many things, popular and unpopular. I would say taking offense is close minded as well. Closed to the aesthetic tastes of others who think differently from you. It’s fine you like it, but don’t get upset because others do not. There’s no reason to take the comments personally.

There’s such a thing as stating opinions respectfully though. Calling it stupid and ugly is offensive, opinion or not. I’m not saying you have to like it, but try to respect those who do.

What? Calling it ugly is offensive? Sure, calling it stupid wasn’t very nice, but I’d be lying if I said my first reaction when I noticed it wasn’t “Ewwww”.

It’s one thing to be open-minded, it’s another to be forced to have whatever sense of aesthethics is supposed to be considered “open-minded”.

But well, since Shelly’s sense of style when it comes to hair and body shape ever since she started to look like a man has made me go “Ewwww” more often than not, it doesn’t really surprise me anymore. Not that I think any less of her as a person, just… as a person who is completely and utterly unattractive to me.

Well if it’s something that went out of style, then came back in, it sounds faddish. I’ve also seen it defined as layering, which wouldn’t be. But Shelly isn’t just layering.

Of course, something similar has been around for a while: the comb-over. :-)

Now, the side cut thing I remember. Often on both sides. Sometimes along with the long hair right at the back. Several variations on that theme, including the hair straight up on the top. I just don’t recall any of my mom’s friends doing that undercut thing at the back of the head. Maybe it wasn’t as noticable.

Don’t take offense Katy. The people who don’t like it are probably in another age demographic. You will not get brutal honesty from your boyfriend. Why do you think guys duck the “do these jeans make my butt look fat” question? It is because we love you and don’t want to hurt your feelings.

            Hah.

It is because we cherish our various bits and bobs precisely where they are and don’t want to have them manually re-arranged by an incensed Significant Other.

As Jeff Foxworthy summed up the situation:

Wife: “Dear – do I look fat?”

Husband: “Sweetie – do I look like an idiot?”

Yes, but the comic you link to shows a jacket that’s at least to the waistband of her jeans. The one she has on here is crop-top length.

Her jacket still comes down to her waist. The jeans, like Tina’s, start well below the waist, thus the midsection exposure.

The things to keep warm are, in order:
    core
    feet
    head
    hands
    arms
    legs

I’m a bit surprised that Shelly’s keeping warm with a bare midriff. I guess it depends — if she’s wearing a fleece top under that cropped jacket, and there’s not much of a breeze, she could be ok– especially since she’s wearing mittens instead of gloves.

The problem with that rubric is that there is a lot less mass at the extremities then at the core. While having a chunk of your hand frozen off is less lethal, your core is a lot harder to cool off.

That said, I think it comes down to personal preferances. I know plenty of ‘shorts’ people who wear their shorts in the snow (I even know a few people who wear flip-flops in it…). I personally can keep my arms bare, but need my toes warm to survive the cold…

When it comes to hairstyles, the best response to a negative comment was given by a dear friend. She likes asymmetrical cuts and often dyes strands of hair various colors. Once when she was picking up several items at the bookstore, the clerk said to her, “You know how stupid your hair looks, right?”

My friend was hurt, I’m certain, by this bluntness, but her response was simply, “I didn’t do it for *you*.”

That’s a good one, I like it. When you do something like that, however, you are putting yourself out there. It does scream “Hey! Back when i was working in a print shop and had rather long hair (for a male) i got my hair caught in the rollers of an A-M 1250W.

Luckily, A-M presses carry both the oily ink and fountain (wetting) solution on the rollers in two layers, and it couldn’t get a good enough grip to pull me in or tear out a chunk of my scalp before one of the other guys switched it off.

Why is it whenever one of the charactes gets their hair cut off, half the regulars scream and cry… and then a month later you get used to it and call it cute? >.> Just give it the month to see how it looks with all their emotions and outfits before you start freaking out about the new hair, guys!

I’m actually a fan of buzzed half-cuts and think Shelly looks awesome. All she needs is a highlight job (not necessarily using unnatural colors) to be perfect.

When a woman gets a haircut, her man’s usual response is shock and dismay. He won’t have a considered, balanced response to it for probably at least a week, and perhaps not for a month. Any reaction prior to that should probably be ignored.

That said, I miss Monica’s long hair. Short hair is cute and all, and a lot easier to have, but I still liked it better long. I look forward to seeing it grow back.

Back when Luann was considering getting a new hair style, she and her mother went to the salon to do it, they came home, her dad congratulated her on the new ‘do…

And she dashed for her room, bawling.

Mom explained that at the last minute Luann had chickened out.

(She later did get the new cut, which is her current style.)

In a month Paul will have it grown back out again. I doubt this will last.

      1) Monica’s hair still looks terrible
      2) Shelly’s looks even worse
      3) Women are gender-bound to cheer their female friends on when they chop their hair off — the worse it looks, the better — because long hair is seen as a symbol of subordination to the desires of men.

“subordination to the desires of men.”

        What’s wrong with that?

Thanks for assuming that women will lie to their friends because they are women and feel the need to “stick it to the man” or men in general. That’s the silliest load of hogwash I’ve ever heard.

I may avoid saying the brutally honest things that come to mind when my friends cut off their hair (and I don’t like it), but I never tell them good things unless I honestly feel that way. If asked for an opinion that I know will be unpleasant, I’m more likely to say something like, “Give me some time to get used to it first.” If pushed, I’ll tell her that I don’t like it.

Then again, I’ve never used the words “stupid” or “ugly” when giving an opinion on a new hair do (of any length or style). I know just how strongly women tend to react to that kind of commentary on their appearance…and I see no need to be unnecessarily cruel.

Ahhh, this comic is awesome. I was able to make a few correct guesses as to how it was unfolding, which made me feel smart, and a few of my guesses were wrong, which made me feel pleasantly surprised. I think Katherine is awesome, by the way.
