I’m with you–they are doing just fine. If Phix were too nice to Nudge, she might not appreciate it enough, or know what to do.

Most likely she would think Phix is up to something and would start planning countermeasures. It’s best this way.

I my experience it only works on cats for women, and I’m still not sure it wasn’t a set up job.
My wife after all is the only one I know who has had several cats that accepted verbal commands.
Me- I’m just happy both she and the cat like me.

heh. no need for apologies, phix knows what she is doing..:)

just the way you would treat a naughty child..

“aww why cant I have the matches???”

“they are dangerous” you strike a match, and then hold it close enough for them to feel the heat, to typical shock..

you answer that ‘frightened look’ with “and go play with traffic” so they know you are not going to ‘treat them like a stupid kid’.. :)

    Hmm
Wether she likes it or not, I think phix is starting to like nudge.
the warning might have been a knee-jerk reaction to someone about to play with fire but it was a warning to someone she doesnt like!

Wonder if the library visitors changed due to Phix leadership of it or the fact that times have just changed. Seems like there may have been more ‘glory hunters’ when nudge was in charge than ‘now’.

What’s so wrong with glory hunters? And why does the library need lethal protection anyway? It’s not like anything can destroy the books. Are the Apo sphinixes so wise they can decern between “true” seekers of knowledge and those bent on nefarious uses of the knowledge? Besides, weren’t they demon killers? Are they expecting an influx of demons into the library?

That warning to Nudge seems a bit like foreshadowing to me.

Its more about destroying the world then destroying books. Imagine if some pompeous asshole walzes in and searches all that stuff on Lantian WMDs (like a chimera Recipe) for some stupid bullshit like creating a master-race or forcing some Fundamentalistic worldview on everyone.

Heck having the Frontdoor connected to the US makes it rather difficult to keep nutjobs and militant fundies out.

        January 18, 2011 at 10:14 am | # | Reply

Right, since there are no nutjobs or militants anywhere but the US.

Besides, how will the Apos know who is going to use the information for evil purposes and who is not? If they are worried about that, they should keep certain information away from everyone, period. It should not even be in book form for anyone to see. Not that it will matter in the end. What has been discovered once can, and will be done again. The Library and all it’s safeguards notwithstanding.

An apotropaic sphinx is one who wards off evil. innit? It would seem counter-intuitive for the apos to be the bad guys. I’d like to see one, though, just to see what they look like.

Well it depends on how the define evil and some people can be wierd about that. We just dont know what the Apos values are and being sphinxes these values could be very cryptic and alien.

Indeed. If they are sticking to the basics, don’t hit and don’t steal, it’s not really much of a problem as those are universal. If their rules go much beyond that, then you start running afoul of variable codes of right and wrong, which leads to a question of who’s code is more valid.

Just offhand, I would say the code belonging to the person who will kill and eat you should you get it wrong would seem to be more valid, at least in a practical sense …

To quote (more or less) Leonard Wibberley’s original novel of The Mouse that Roared: A NovelThe Mouse That Roared:

While, in the long run, the pen is, indeed, mightier than the sword, at any given moment the sword speaks more loudly and convincingly.
