Atsali had parents who died under mysterious circumstances. It would seem Castela *never* had parents—though if the backstory from Calista is true, it’s possible she *may* have had someone who might’ve acted as her parents, but who were made to forget all about her. Which would be even harder to bear.
And now we get to the crux of the problem. Her fear of being tossed aside. Looks like Bryn is going to have to win the kid over to show her that she does love Kath.and is not going to toss her aside. That and Kath has to let her know that NOTHING is going to change the way she feels about Any.of them.
True — Atsali isn’t Kath; but Kath isn’t Atsali, either. Pickle has been with Atsali since before the Orphanage, and one of Castela’s earliest recovered memories (via the Q Room of the Library) is of Castela protecting Atsali! I would expect that (potential) separation to generate some angst, too.
What BarerMender said – the one goes out of panel to the right, through Paul’s signature. The other would show behind her, hidden by her head and hair.
The harsh reality that life IS change, hitting in one of the most vulnerable points the girls have. You never get people back the same, though you don’t always see the growth the day to day brings. The only time people don’t change is when they’re dead, and that’s not a result either one of them would welcome. I don’t think Cas is ready to see that yet, though.
It’s easy to chalk this up to abandonment issues but I can’t help but think there is more to this than is readily apparent. I suspect something about Bryn is triggering her beyond just that but I can’t put my finger on what, specifically.
I think that deep down, Castela knows this. But she’s too afraid to accept it yet.
Remember – back in the Orphanage sequence, before the adoption, when she began throwing a tantrum, shwas saying her parents “threw her away”.
Her abandonment issues are a lot worse than Atsali’s.
And neither of then knew Katherine after the archaeological dig incident, and her years of PTSD.

More likely Atsali’s parents used non-para portions of their own DNA for Castela’s animal side.
Why else would Leucoisa be so protective of Castela in her nascent form?

“I will protect what I have, even against the Ups & Downs of Life and Love…”.
Sometimes, being smart, works against you…
They could use some divine intervention.
Like being poited into the Q Room and have a little quality time with Leucoisa.
Did Castela have similar issues when Atsali hooked up with Nadette? I don’t think so.
She was younger then, and Atsali and Nadette are not Katherine and Bryn.

That separation’s a-coming. ‘Sali goes off to College soon enough.
Castela, you have to consider the damage if your mother stays a hermit and never looks for love. Where will her happiness go?
Back where it was when we first met her.
Break your mama’s heart talking like that, stinkweed.
All you can do is be there to try to catch her if it goes wrong. love.
Is it just me or does Castela’s shadow lack the horns she’s currently manifesting? And is that just an art error or does it actually mean something?
The left horn is there in the big circle of Paul’s signature. The other shadow horn is hidden.
What BarerMender said – the one goes out of panel to the right, through Paul’s signature. The other would show behind her, hidden by her head and hair.
You can just see the tip of the one behind her head, in the ‘v’ made by her hair and horn
Perhaps this is where Atsali gives Pickle a lecture on how tough Katherine really is.
For some reason I can’t see Cas tearing up without wondering…
Is that – ummmm – sap?
In ^this^ pic it looks like it could be.
We never come back the same. . . damage is life, life is damage.
And we either grow over it or let it kill us.
Or it drastically changes us.
And HERE is the beginnings of the personality displayed in those two flash forward strips showing Pickle at an older age…
“Hoping to goodness” is not theologically sound: Linus van Pelt
But neither is the Great Pumpkin.
Which two strips?
And that, Atsali, is why some of us don’t let ourselves fall in love. (Middle panel.)
We usually get burned a few times anyway…
Shame, Castela. Letting your fears get in the way of your mother’s happiness.

Scroll down about half way to the picture Fairportfan posted up; it’s a Montage of Castela (& Atsali too) at a lager age.
Since Paul put up these some time ago, we- the reading public, have kind of been following how things would progress to get them to that stage…
PS- “That’s What Love IS!, You Idiot!!!!”…
True enough; look what happened to poor Castela…NOT the girl she once was!
