OK — so I think there’s either two possibilities. 1) they both back away totally embarrassed, or 2) she pulls him in and plants a big on right on his face. What are the odds?
So, telling him he was kind, and good looking, was abusive? Maybe she told have told him he was really special, entitled to whayever he wanted, and to ignore anyone who told him he was wrong. With that kind of encouragement he could go on to be President.
Telling him that his only good points were his looks and kindness… by implication, declaring that there is nothing else about him that’s at all worthwhile or worth encouraging or working on… that’s what was cruel, and not every slightly constructive.
Telling him he had to look for someone patient enough to put up with him, because the ONLY things worthwhile about him were his looks and his kindness? Yeah, THAT is a giant problem.
Being told your kind and handsome but dim.. is still an a hole move. at least hes good looking and smart. To quote “Its lucky you are smart boy cause you are an not handsome and come from a long line of assholes.”
It reminds me of the beginning of the movie “Broadcast News”, where William Hurt’s character is told, as a child, that he’s gorgeous but dumb. Not by his parents, but by his school and the world around him. And when he asks what can someone do with nothing but good looks, the screen flashes up “Future Network Anchorman”.
Being told your only good points are that you’re kind and handsome, while at the same time either directly or indirectly implying that you’re a dimbulb, is a dick move, especially to your own children.
We know that at least one of his parents is fae, and it’s been more or less established that fae are not noted for their kindness. I’m being deliberately charitable with my phrasing.
She was telling him to settle for being a trophy husband. To not have ambitions. Kindness is a wonderful trait on its own but that isn’t the point of the statement.
Not when you are told that that (and being handsome) are your only good qualities and your best bet is to find someone patient enough to put up with the rest of you
Ignore the point, much, Ian? He wasn’t told by his mother that he was handsome and kind, he was told that he had nothing else to offer. How is that NOT abusive?
One of the first things he told Castel after she transformed him back from a butterfly with magic root beer is that he found out his parents thought he’d been murdered. You’d think his mother would treat him better afterwards, but maybe that’s how the fae roll…
Maybe that’s just part of her hyu-man disguise and she needs glasses for all of them?
Or, maybe like how some people only need corrective lens’ for one eye, she just needs them for two, or, another possibility: they are just for show
Addendum: I only ever recall seeing her in this swimwear, skimpy sleepwear designed to attract Hiroshi’s attention, a sweatshirt, and her school uniform. Not enough to go on to determine if the glasses are a conscious fashion choice.
I hate to be the one here to point this out but… Hiroshi is half fae and in all likely hood has a parent that looks like they have borderline psychosis because of their alien thought process so who knows how he looks at the world. I mean he spent a year as a butterfly and come out acting peachy keen. So for all we know what was said was more along “Sweetie please stop being attracted to the crazies, they’ll only hurt you in the long run.
I believe he himself told Castella he was half-fae, shortly after she accidentally transformed him back from a butterfly. What hasn’t been said, is what his other half is.
He seems too kind and absentminded to lie about something like that.
Stick a fork in Cass. Cause she’s done. After this kind of soul swapping conversation. Shawna and Hiroshi can’t help but “connect” The ” this is what I know is wrong with me.” Followed by the ” but that not true ! I believe in you!” They just did. pretty much places Cass in the 3rd wheel category. She did it to herself again. Talk about reluctant match maker.
I disagree Hiroshi to this point was much more interested in Cass. Then Shawna Hence him seaking Cass out all the time. much like tim did back in the day. you know the 1st time Cass torpedoed herself. The 1st time she wasn’t truly into tim tho. Cass just thought she was. After she was more then ok with it. This time she had her hair popping in to flowers every time she saw him. major boy crush. So this time is going to be huge hard for her.
Au contraire drealm2459, it is possible that her blossoming was due to embarrassment of having seen him naked while she was mostly unclothed, and having him on top of her. While I don’t personally believe this, it is entirely possible that she was just experiencing the awakening of puberty hormones, and he just happened to get associated with the effect like Pavlov’s dogs’ salivation got associated with bell ringing…
Yeah, males aren’t the only ones with un-controllable ‘signs’, and Hiro is a handsome young man, just because her body was saying “Pollenate me!” her mind was saying “What the heck is going on?”
her Popping flowers every time she saw him might remotely be from the saw him naked thing. ( very remotely at best.) BUT him seaking her out. wasn’t that. also you are forgetting that he bonded to her while he was in butterfly mode. he got to know the real Cass. now granted she only knew him as a cute little bug. but he said he remembers everything she said while he was part of bugland. he came to know her. the real her. Cass is a mix of wisdom beyond her years, bat shit crazy and awesome coolness to the power of infinity. A boy his age would be attracted to her like her would be to a flame while he was still a bug. Cass also bonded to him while he was a butterfly. She would look for him. Cass saw him In “all his glory” and lets face it from a young teen girl point of view Hiroshi is a hunk. He is also very polite and kind. so bonded to him, hunk, and polite and kind. so yes major boy crush on Casses point of view. We all know from before the last person to know ( or admit) how Cass really feels is Cass. so I am In the Hiroshi and Cass where (maybe are) crushing on one another school of thought. Well at least till the events above happened.
Mom’s words were well-meant, even if she was unintentionally limiting him, and he didn’t seem to be actually hurt by them. For a fae who “lives in the moment” its fairly sage advice. Look on the bright side, even if his mother’s words had hurt him, he’d probably forget that too. Eventually. Maturity is understanding the difference between what one has been/is being told about oneself and what one’s true self actually is.
And they froze forever in time….or she just had a very, very bad embarrassing reading of hiroshi when she touched him
The light bulb illuminates in both fridges.
OK — so I think there’s either two possibilities. 1) they both back away totally embarrassed, or 2) she pulls him in and plants a big on right on his face. What are the odds?
drat — “big one”. sigh.
Yeah, all I could think was, “Now, kith”
Whelp… that just got embarrassing in 0 to 100 for them.
So, telling him he was kind, and good looking, was abusive? Maybe she told have told him he was really special, entitled to whayever he wanted, and to ignore anyone who told him he was wrong. With that kind of encouragement he could go on to be President.

They call it “damning with faint praise”.
People with good looks alone get very far in the real world. Adding a sprinkling of kindness is just icing on the cake.
Telling him he had to look for someone patient enough to put up with him, because the ONLY things worthwhile about him were his looks and his kindness? Yeah, THAT is a giant problem.

Again, so kindness isn’t a worthy quality by itself?
She was telling him to settle for being a trophy husband. To not have ambitions. Kindness is a wonderful trait on its own but that isn’t the point of the statement.
not particularly no.
Not when you are told that that (and being handsome) are your only good qualities and your best bet is to find someone patient enough to put up with the rest of you

-ahem- -awkward shuffling and silence-
One of the first things he told Castel after she transformed him back from a butterfly with magic root beer is that he found out his parents thought he’d been murdered. You’d think his mother would treat him better afterwards, but maybe that’s how the fae roll…
This may go back to before he was butterflied.
Wait, I don’t think that was the term I was looking for…
Yeah, that is pretty much how the Fae roll. That’s why so many paras have nothing good to say about them…
I can make you feel MORE Awkward …
Why does someone with 6 eyes need Glasses for 2 of them? That’s not a look most young teens would choose.
Maybe all 6 eyes squish together into 2 mildly screwed up eyes when she shapeshifts.
That must be one heckuva prescription to grind.
Maybe that’s just part of her hyu-man disguise and she needs glasses for all of them?
Or, maybe like how some people only need corrective lens’ for one eye, she just needs them for two, or, another possibility: they are just for show
There was the “nerdy look” fad, where people would wear fake glasses, but I’m not sure her other fashion choices suggest that’s what she’s doing.
Addendum: I only ever recall seeing her in this swimwear, skimpy sleepwear designed to attract Hiroshi’s attention, a sweatshirt, and her school uniform. Not enough to go on to determine if the glasses are a conscious fashion choice.

Where was it said he was half-fae?
We have no way of knowing that he ‘come out acting peachy keen’ as we have not really seen him often enough to tell
I believe he himself told Castella he was half-fae, shortly after she accidentally transformed him back from a butterfly. What hasn’t been said, is what his other half is.
He seems too kind and absentminded to lie about something like that.
Paul confirmed Hiroshi’s and Shawna’s para-types on twitter
Since I’m not on Twitter, did he say what Hiroshi’s other half is?
And IIRC, Shawna is a pixie. Please do correct me if I’m wrong.
Is this Castela’s second “always the bridesmaid” moment in the making? I have to say I would not have called that…
“OMG, OMG, OMG, I’m touching him!”
4 hours later. . .
“OMG, OMG, OMG, I’m touching him!”

She was never really in the picture to start with
I disagree Hiroshi to this point was much more interested in Cass. Well, this oughta just about wrap it up for Hiroshi and Castela. Unless he forgets again.
I still think we’re going to end up with a para triangle like Archie (Hiroshi)-Betty (Castela)- Veronica (Shawna).
Nope, now it’s time for DayStela
