That had better not be a shoggoth because if it is that implies Lovecraft may have been correct. Most of Lovecraft’s creations were far more dangerous than the three golems we have already or the calendar so casually introducing their existance would be a bad idea.
Except Lovecraft lifted a great deal of his lore from other author of that time. Wikipedia has a lovely rabbithole you can spend many hours following the links that cover all the sources.
Well, actually, not an octopus – they don’t have the fin on the head. It’s something else, and the back story on this relationship ought to be interesting.
Absolutely LOVE the sound effects!!! I mentally envision him as sounding like an eldritch combination of an enormous frog, a seriously annoyed mule and tub farts.
Especially when it’s from a kinda cheap tub made of sheet steel and enamel. It has a kinda echoing resonance. Can’t get that from one of the old types or a well made porcelain tub. My sister had one of those cheap tubs and the noises it could make when you just got in were very interesting! Her toilet could sound like lift-off at Cape Kennedy, at times.
Heh..Our toilet and antique bath had the same noisy presence. The fact that the metal bathtub was also encased in a hardwood box, made it act like a subwoofer, and fairly often resulted in a loud:”HEY!!!” from the livingroom..
( actually “bubbling away” made even better noises, always ending in a nice “rrrengngngn!!’ from the metal beams in the hall. My ‘sis was the best at that.. 😆 )
Yep! So was hers!!When you flushed the toilet and drained the tub at the same time, the harmonics, clangings and bangings were awesome!! The Blue Man Group would have jealous! I think if she had flushed, drained the tub AND the sink at the same time it would’ve caused a black hole somewhere in the universe. So much for that multimillion $$$ collider in Europe!
True dat!. Unless it’s about predicting disasters, management muck-ups and/or “company restructures”. Then being often right might lead to a rather depressing outlook on life… 😛
I, for one, was completely surprised by the turn this story just took, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I was expecting something horrible to happen. Thanks for this heart-warming surprise, Paul. You’re really good at the surprising-the-readers-with-an-unexpected-twist thing. Never a dull moment reading Wapsi Square!
It’s a matter of wild mass guessing (Tropes warning there, BTW). If fans make enough guesses, at least one of them will probably hit close to the mark.
I know they’re supposed to be suction cup thingies, or whatever, but given the way Paul drew them, the first time I looked at the last panel I couldn’t help but see hundreds of pods with a startlingly large (considering the scale) insect in each one.
“gurk, gurk, gurk” is actually a very good onomatpoeia.
Just to aurally “visuallize” I said it a couple of times in my deepest voice… It sounds decidedly large-sea-critter-ish.. And as a reward I got great baffled stares from my collegues.
Sadly my enjoyment of their bafflement was short-lived as one of my fellow techies looked at me, and immediately grabbed his iPad, exclaiming : “Yay..the new Wapsi-Square is up!!!.. 😆 😆
It might have been a mutual thing — Stinky found a very interesting toy he couldn’t possibly break, and Bud might have felt some kinship with the beast … seeing them as two monsters together.
D’awwwwwwww…?
Of course they’ve got a shoggoth as a pet. Why wouldn’t they?
Stinky the Shuggoth… he he he 🙂
“still” alive…? How long’s it been since Bud last saw it?
lanthis

Maybe Lovecraft was just a spindoctor that over inflated the power of some super natural pets suffering from an inferiority complex.
Never underestimate the destructive force of an angry short blonde chick.
Except Lovecraft lifted a great deal of his lore from other author of that time. Wikipedia has a lovely rabbithole you can spend many hours following the links that cover all the sources.
Well, at least it’s not on her roof!
Whoever it was that predicted this on the last page, kudos!! XD
And I quote:
me too! 🙂
Yep. Spot on. I’m too lazy to go see who, but yes, scored on that call.
Stinky! What did I tell you about eating small countries?!
How old is this Ancient one???
That’s the first cute octopud I’ve ever seen.
I was going to make a crack about Irish Eyes a-Smiling, but never mind…
Paul does have a tallent for creating adorable critters out of the most unadorable creatures :p
Either that or we be just a bunch of softies 😀
Yes.
It’s got eight?
Its girlfriend(s) must be really happy…
Maybe he has eight, but only one for mating you know. Male Octopuses have one tentacle which top is formed to transmite the sperms to the female.
Back to the comic! What a twist in the storyline! Most expected a monster attack but the opposite happens. Well played with our expectations Paul!
That is hilarious. I need to remember that line for use on my brother…
Which line? They’re ALL usefull on brothers…
Bud has a pet giant octopus? Who knew?
And why aren’t I more surprised?
Well, actually, not an octopus – they don’t have the fin on the head. It’s something else, and the back story on this relationship ought to be interesting.
Yes, it certainly is.
Naughty tentacles!
Soooo, time for the minikilt, and crinkly socks, hai?
totally called it. that was my first guess. also you guys were right about her smelling him and not just feeling his gaze.
also bud in the second panel is… well i don’t know how to describe it, but lets just say i wish i were Stinky right now…
Whaddayaknow..some people called it!..
Like ME! 😀
I’m now wondering where she (they?) got him from. I’m thinking it has something to do with the Lanthis / Atlantis story line.
IKA MUSUME!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinryaku!_Ika_Musume
Fixed link. (I think.)
How did I know Bud would have a pet Kraken
And from where was it released?
Lanthis of course
are you sure its not one Ray Haryhousens left overs 😛
Yuck “Creature from the Black Lagoon” run for the hills!
In the last panel, is Stinky channeling Bill the Cat? Ppbbbbbbt…….
Yay! Tentacles finally appear in Wapsi Square lol
Seriously, can’t wait to hear the story behind Stinky
I presume they met when tepoz had them since he was the only one who let them out once in a while (least from what i recall)
Wonder if bud knew nemo 😀
I don’t even wanna know.
Okay. Now it’s cute.
My first thought: *squeeee* Cthutulu!!!
It’s awesome, thank you
Monica has a dog, Tina and Amanda have cats, Shelly has a cop, Katherine has a fish…
I suppose it’s only fair.
“…Shelly has a cop…”
Good one!
Don’t forget Jin has a little girl.
And Brandi has her flies 😀
Absolutely LOVE the sound effects!!! I mentally envision him as sounding like an eldritch combination of an enormous frog, a seriously annoyed mule and tub farts.
Shades of Lio and Ishmael!
“Tub farts” – from self-aeration or when the tushie slides down the porcelain?… doesn’t matter… great sound!!! ^_^
Especially when it’s from a kinda cheap tub made of sheet steel and enamel. It has a kinda echoing resonance. Can’t get that from one of the old types or a well made porcelain tub. Well of course Bud knows an Eldrich Horror, born from the depths. Why would she not?
Hahaha, I called it. It’s nice to be right once in a blue moon…
True dat!. Unless it’s about predicting disasters, management muck-ups and/or “company restructures”. Then being often right might lead to a rather depressing outlook on life… 😛
The Heartwarming story of a Golum….and her Squid.
“Golem”, not “Golum”. Golum is the creepy creature in Lord of the Rings. Just sayin’…
Nope. One “L” short (if we’re going to be totally a**lly retentive)
Would that be Girl Stinky or Grandpa Stinky? 🙂
(too fast on the Post Button. Forgot:) Cue ‘Lassie theme’, Bud: “What is it, Stinky? You say Timmys in the well (again) and the Barns on fire?!?”
…. My guess about the future series of events was wrong. I must be reading Wapsi Square.
Aint it cute? a girl and her … sea monster?

I have to add that I’m very impressed by the uncannily deductive powers of such readers as managed to predict this turn of events.
Some of us have been practising out-thinking the artist here (and at Pibgorn) for years.
And writing about it, sharing our guesses.
It’s a matter of wild mass guessing (Tropes warning there, BTW). If fans make enough guesses, at least one of them will probably hit close to the mark.
I think you misspelt “wild ass guessing”,,,
Would that be the ass pull? We can have that too!
Cuddly lookin’ critter.
Well, it could certainly cuddle you.
I know they’re supposed to be suction cup thingies, or whatever, but given the way Paul drew them, the first time I looked at the last panel I couldn’t help but see hundreds of pods with a startlingly large (considering the scale) insect in each one.
Anyone else see that?
“gurk, gurk, gurk” is actually a very good onomatpoeia.

lmao almost as if he knew what you were looking at.
Hooray! A new pet gets introduced!
Awwww! I want one!!! 🙂
…cue swelling strings…
Dooooo-DOOOOO… dooo-ti-dooooo-ti-doooooooooo!
The kraken was her pet?
pet owners should have pets they can handle. Since Bud is well… Bud, she can handle a kraken.
It might have been a mutual thing — Stinky found a very interesting toy he couldn’t possibly break, and Bud might have felt some kinship with the beast … seeing them as two monsters together.
Bud KNOWS that Calamari calamity??? Well, who knew? :-/
(And please people; don’t start ‘Kraken’ jokes about this either…) 😛
AhHA!!
http://plixi.com/p/87842059
Sold Out.
Hissssssss
Oh, come on, it’s obvious that you’re squidding. You’re just fishing for puns, aren’t you?
And why does Bud’s reaction not surprise me at all?? 🙂
You’re new, aren’t you?
Anyone who’s followed this comic for a while knows: NOTHING surprises us anymore.
This body of water is reputed to be occupied by an aquatic monster.
What is Loch Ness?

WHAT?!?!
