I’ve wondered if the very dark look to them wasn’t entirely Paul trying to play up her creepy impression, but that her eyes, the irises, are actually black. It’s uncommon, but some people have them. It would give people the false impression that she had massive pupils, or that her eyes were just large dark pits.
Katherine is probably one of my favorite Wapsi characters ever.

If you look close at the second and forth frame, it looks like her eyes are black outside the irises, too.

No, I think the whole thing with the spiders would make Hanners go catatonic OR start flailing about.
