um, aren’t you not supposed to give birds rice? i think i heard it makes birds explode, or something; something about rice expanding.

Just so. Oh I doubt it’s quite so dramatic. More like their little stomachs swell to double or triple their normal size and rupture, leading to painful and not-quick-enough death. You might see a couple drop out of the sky like rocks, but I’m pretty sure they don’t go ka-boom like a grenade.

I believe the modern tradition is to throw bird seed (or sometimes confetti, but that’s such a pain in the ass to clean up).

Who is to say what those little black dots they’re throwing are, though?

That’s actually a bit of false information that got started by some celebrity at one point. Birds eat grains, their systems are designed for it. The amount of liquid needed for rice to swell enough to be an issue for them simply doesn’t exist in their tiny digestive systems.

Not people that crumble antacid tablets and trick birds into eating them, however…grrr

As with much information now, I first saw this on the Simpsons. When Lisa mentioned this to Bart, his response was ‘Why am I only hearing about this now?!’

Yeah… I was about to correct my old post if you hadn’t. I’m aware this is an urban myth now. 😛

Because of that claim about rice some couples opt to give their guests bird seed instead. My guess is that is why Monica is feeding the birds with hers.
