It’s common when people deal with an inner turmoil they will experience sadness, and when that sadness overwhelms they they try to switch to another emotion – wraith. It looks like this dream is a representation of that.
I was thinking more that this is a personification of Shelly’s inner demon, like Doubt is to Monica, but perhaps focused on a different negative emotion. Grief? Despair?
Normally these “inner demons” are metaphorical, but in this Wapsi-universe, they’re a bit more than just figments of the imagination.
