Advice from somebody who didn’t let -40 windchills prevent me from cycle commuting…
get accessories in this order: Effective Cycling by John Forester
Helmet

Water bottle & cage
IF you right at dusk/night, lights & reflectors
toe clips and straps
gloves
shoes

I have never needed a sports bra, but I suppose it’d go somewhere between “lock” and “gloves”.
So bike helmets are lame. There was study (not gonna look it. What do I look like google) Anyway, because the helmets were so brightly colored it caused more bike accidents. I wish they just made white.
Reflects and a light are a must. Gloves are always good too!
Bought my bike and a lock at Wal-Mart. I rode it like twice before deciding it wasn’t worth it: my dorm is downhill from everything else on campus. It’s easier and faster to just walk.
Do what I did. Bike up the hill as far as you can stand to, then hop off and walk up the rest of the way. Keep doing that and eventually you will make it all the way to the top of the hill.
I had a long, steep hill on my way home from high school. I started biking to and from school in the 10th grade. By the 11th, my thighs were HUGE! ^_^
Don’t forget a water bottle and holder, reflectors. . . .
