A good bikeframe can withstand the “normal” crashes but between my six (or so) bikes I’ve owned over the years there have been at least ten replaced frontforks (sorry litteral translation from Dutch not entirely sure if it’s the correct term in English) and only 2 rims (keeping the spokes tensioned correctly helps alot)
After serious collisions (like with cars or at higher speeds) it’s a smart thing to have the welding of frame checked for hairline fissures, otherwise the bike might look ok, but is an acident waiting to happen.
the part that gives me headaches after mishaps is the rear gearchange mechanism on this bike alone (5 years) I had to replace it 3 times because during a tumble it got smashed into a tree/post/wall. I don’t know what bothered me more the fiddling to get the gears working again or walking to work the next day(s)…
Over the years I’ve had nearly a dozen bikes and have broken:
2 pedals
2 cranks
2 bottom brackets (the part that holds the petals to the bike)
2 chains
2 gears out of the rear tire cartridge
2 rear axles
Basically anything that’s used to make the bike move, I’ve broken twice.
HAHAHAH I LOVE THIS ONE… SO TRUE AMANDA..SO TRUE
A good frame can survive the average crash no problem. Rims on the other hand… good luck.
