Being just a little tipsy and being in a fun mood is enough to go around dancing in your kitchen and be la-la silly. It doesn’t actually prevent you from thinking. She’s a cool sister
Oh, Americans and their formid relatives…
In the immortal words of Roald Dahl,
“Some people in the U.S.A.
Have trouble with the words they say.
However hard they try, they can’t
Pronounce simple words like AUNT.
Instead of AUNT, they call it ANT,
Instead of CAN’T, they call it KANT.”
Just keep your anteaters away from elderly relatives 😀
I grew up in Massachusetts. I learned to say aunt to rhyme with haunt. I moved away almost 40 years ago, cross-country to California. I’ve shed most of my MA accent for daily speaking altogether, but I still rhyme aunt with haunt. I don’t call my way more correct. I call it my way to make sure I don’t get mental images of my parents’ female siblings and in-laws as bugs with human faces. It’s my most consistent “Hey, you aren’t from here, are you” marker. (Quarter and orange are behind it in how often the New England comes out, but not by much.)
It’s more closely related to sounding like “aren’t”
Not saying that your way is not correct, it’s your way, just never heard it sound like “or’nt” before (which is just a variation on “aren’t”, just with an ‘o’ instead of an ‘a’)
It’s a good explanation why an über-powerful paranormal like Castela would be so scared of being alone.
She remembers being very alone, as The Blackthorn. Possibly, the only being in existence. Been there, done that, doesn’t want to wear that particular T-shirt ever again. She’s sorta like Jin in that respect… powerful, yet possibly fated to live forever and face the loss of those she loves, over and over again.
She knows that she’s powerful enough that if she overreacts she could fry her sister into vapor, destroy the entire city in which her mother lives, or flex her Blackthorn muscles and rip realities apart and be suddenly rid of everyone and everything she’s known in this life. She’d be entirely alone, once again, much too soon.
Y’know…looking over the events, I can’t see any indication Castela knew Atsali was in the building. Maybe she should have known, but the knowledge of it seemed to have eluded her.
At the instinctive level she knew that Astali was down in the kitchen, but because she wants to live a normal paranormal life, she didn’t pay attention to that part of herself 🤷🏻♂️
THERE’S the Atsali we love!
Atsali, sweetie, please stop glaring into my soul.
It’s scary
I rather like the apparent age regression . . .
The third panel, where they are trying not to collapse into a giggle fit
I’m fascinated by the shading in panel 2.
Also, Atsali’s smile in the last panel. It makes me happy.
Atsali is pretty damn logical for being three sheets to the wind!
I don’t think Atsali was that drunk, think she was playing it up, because Stela commented that she smelt like beer.

I suspect so . . . I’ve known people who’d act like that if they even “smelled the cork”.
Atsali still has her ‘total clarity’ moments I see

Oddly, my dad, who was a West Virginia mountain man, said “awnt.” Don’t know why. It wasn’t standard in the area.
It’s been scientifically proven that the best hangover cure is a bacon sandwich.
Yum. Bacon sandwich, on buttered rye toast, with cheese.
There aren’t only ants in the family, there’s also a mantis 😉
I might be misremembering, but isn’t there a cephalopod somewhere in there as well?
I could totally see Aunt Monica or Aunt Shelly telling Castela, “Drop and give me twenty, right now!”
Maybe Atsali isn’t as thunk as we drink she is.
Slapped in the face with some reality to bring her back down.
Then, snackies.
I was wondering when Atsali was call her little sis out for her outburst.
Do we know what she means by “alone in the void again”? Is that a Blackthorn thing?
Well, the Blackthorn is older than the Earth, and older than the Elder Gods, so yes.

So, yeah, she’s a bit touchy on the subject.

Make sure they are not ‘special’ brownies, or you will just be making things worse 😛
