Lemme, guess… Euryale hails from the south part of Greece, y’all!

      Way down south. LOL

Greek equivalent of Texas if I had to guess. (Definitely not Mississippi; that’s where I’m from and our accents are different.)

Libya, according to the mythology. And that’s definitely not Texas. More like Georgia or eastern Tennessee.

Her enthusiasm is rather scary. I’m concerned that if she ended up in the same room as Jacqui, it would explode due to sheer cheerfulness.

I doubt there’s a local Gorgon support group so she probably does not have a whole lot of friends that she can tell more about herself to.

Sheesh. If her eye light up any more, I’m gonna need my sunglasses. IF she and Brandy were in the same room, they would probably blind anyone in there with ’em.

Looks like we are getting a new regular character here.

Monica seems to have finally remembered a principle tenet of her chosen profession; When an opportunity to learn about the past presents itself, learn from it.

Huh, I was kind of thinking she was probably kicking herself internally for remembering – and following – Daren’s advice from when she was having trouble relating to people.

      • Maark30
        November 3, 2011, 2:32 am | #

Probably, but Monica always knew that Daren was right.

Yup. A fan, being acknowledged by her hero. That’s a mega-candella smile for sure!

Reminds me a bit of how Spider Robinson described himself, after meeting Robert Heinlein. Spider described his reaction to one of Heinlein’s lesser-known stories (“The Man Who Traveled in Elephants”) saying that he’d literally never read the end when he wasn’t grinning and leaking tears at the same time.

Heinlein stared at him for a moment, said “That was my single express intention in writing it. You’re the first person who ever told me I’d achieved it.” and then autographed Spider’s copy of the story.

Spider floated blissfully away through the air, “occasionally moving my legs so I wouldn’t scare people.”

Euryale is experiencing one of those sorts of happy moments, I think.

I had a similar experience with David Drake a few years ago – though i didn’t get quite so happybuzzed – i told him that i had reacted to Chapter 13 in his novel Rolling Hot with almost blind rage, and he said “Yes! That’s exactly the reaction i was hoping for!”

As i said in my review (linked above):

If you can read it, watch those characters fighting and dying, and not find yourself in some sort of emotional state as you read Chapter 13, which is a slightly-less-formal version of a military arrival report of Task Force Ranson’s arrival in the capital, listing the few remaining vehicles and personnel from those that they rolled with, then you have Not Been Listening.

Yay – I love both Spider Robinson and Heinlein 😉
On a much lesser level I did impress Isaac Asimov when I met him – the book I brought for him to autograph was his Opus 100 – all about him – and also a box of homemade cookies (heh heh heh) We wound up pen pals for several years 😉

She should go shopping with Brandi. I can imagine it to be pure bliss for both. Both booky, ditzy looking. We should keep Jacqui out of the way though. There is only SO much prozac daisy that the world can support without blowing up..

Kind of interesting that Paul draws her with a more realistic nose and eyes even though she’s non human while the humans are more stylized. Definetly claws on the hands though. Of course, if she does start hanging out with the rest of the gang, they won’t stand out among a group that includes four women with teeth a lion woulod be envious of.

That’s actually mythologically correct; people remember the hair of snakes but forget the brass hands or claws – Euryale is just covering up those a little less than her hair. Fangs aren’t worth mentioning; every supernatural woman in Minneapolis has those. *grin*

@Paula: She may not have a ‘job’ other than cashing the interest checks on her several-lifetimes-long fortune. Living in a mortal world, she will have learned to re-invent herself to disguise her imortality. Jin has done this for herself and her mom.

Don’t know if Euryale was inside the time loops or outside, but it’s probably harder now in the information age to drop out every forty years or so and pop up with a new identity than it was before….

Having grown up in South Carolina (till i left for the Navy at eighteen), and lived in Georgia since 1972, i’d say Tennessee – but it might be a “Foreigner’s” version of a Southern accent, too.

I would not try to write a Southern dialect by phonetic mispronunciations, myself – i’d try to get the word choices and rhythms right, and the “accent” part sor of falls into place.

The first words in Manly Wade Wellman’s collection of “Silver John” stories,Who Fears the Devil (at least in the book as Manly intended it, rather than in the incredibly obtuse Baen edition f a few years ago) are:

“Where I’ve been is places and what I’ve seen is things, and there’ve been times I’ve run off from seeing them, off to other places and things.”

It’s almost impossible (in my opinion) to read that sentence aloud without slipping into at least an approximation of John’s mountain dialect.

You can read Who Fears the Devil in its entirety online here, at Baen Books {they decided to call it John the Balladeer, for whatever silly reasons Jim had}.

The chapters linked as “13” and “14” are, in fact, short pieces that Manly intended to go between the stories in the book – and it was, in fact, originally published that way. But Baen decided that the book had to be in strict order by original magazine publication, and, since Manly had written the entre’act pieces rather late in his career, and they were all published together in The Magazine of Fantast and Science Fiction, Baen put them all together in one lump.

(And do not get me started on the way that Eric Flint “edited James Schmitz’s stories for Baen…)

And, if you go there and read any of the stories, you really need to read the one linked as “10” – “Over the Hills and Everywhere”… I used to dream of doing that as a dramatised reading/radio play…

      • Fairportfan

Oh, well. You didn’t need to save that huge bottle of red pixel-text for your retirement, I hope? We’ll just call you the Duke of URL and leave it at that.

What is it with Baen, anyhow? I’ve looked at their output very sceptically for years now, ever since I caught them publishing various collections of Laumer short stories under new titles, and neglecting to include any mention of the stories’ prior publishing history in the frontspiece. Rather a sleazy tactic, I thought…

      • Fairportfan
        November 3, 2011, 1:10 pm | #

They usually tell you somewhere (in small type) that the stories have been previously published in another format.

But Baen Books bears the stamp of Jim’s personality, even now that he’s gone, and he was always a hustler looking to milk the last dime out of everything.

Baen’s done good by my brother, though.

As was said of the banker, Thomasas the Syrian, in L Sprague deCamp’s Lest Darkness Fall: “Sure, he’s honest. You just have to watch him, is all.”

Now that M is getting her composure back, she’ll eventually realize that she’s friends with two sphinxes, has dealt with a variety of demons for years, knows four golems, and is a welcome guest in a trans-dimensional library. She may as well start Expecting to meet a variety of ancient “mythical” beings along the way!

There’s no such thing as coincidence in the Wapsiverse.

Euryale is gonna casually drop a reference to the vimana cells.

      November 3, 2011, 7:53 am | # | Reply

As wise person once told my friend, ‘coincidence’ only means that two things happen at the same time. It’s not in itself proof that they aren’t related.

But I suspect Euryale’s story will cut deeper into the purpose Monica’s quest than the running after vimana cells.

Of Course she’s going to mention something about “Vimana Cells”: she’s part of the Annex’s “info”!!

Monica never specified that the info she received *must* be in book format, she just assumed it. The Library knows that Euryale hes more info in her brain about them AND she happened to be in the annex at the same time, so the Library set them up together. so when she walks back to the study tables, lo and behold: there is Euryale!… who, as some of us believe, will begin her spiel with stuff about her then she’ll segue into other stuff and then out’ll come the Vimana Cell stuff, or at least a rain check for the continuation of this conversation at a later date.

I can picture myself having the same reaction if I ever meet any one of a handful of print or webcomic authors. I know that “epic fanboy mode” exists in my psyche somewhere – I have to beat him with a stick every so often to avoid becoming an example of G.I.F.T.

        November 3, 2011, 11:12 am | #

It stands for the Greater Internet F***wad Theory. It states that ordinary people with anonymity and an audience are much more likely to be total jerks. It was originally a satirical theory that originated somewhere on the internet, but scientific research has backed it up.

      • Maark30
        November 3, 2011, 4:49 pm | #

I figured that out from news-forums. Have you ever read the comments sections from a news article? People just prove that so many people just love to make themselves feel superior to others by putting down the victims of crimes and disasters. It sometimes makes me wonder if there is a chance for the human race.

      • Casey
        November 3, 2011, 6:27 pm | #

Sometimes you just have to stop and realize that those halfwits posting hateful comments on news articles aren’t a representative sample of the human race. Those kinds of things tend to attract the timid jackasses among us; those who feel the need to put others down, but are too cowardly to speak their mind to someones face. Such people have always existed, they’re just more visible now.

If you want to restore your faith in humanity, simply look at those who don’t abuse the privilege of anonymity. They probably outnumber those who do. Look at us here. We are more than capable of being civil despite not having to look each other in the eye as we post. In other words, don’t let a few idiots color your view of humanity.

I guess I’m done being all serious and wordy now. I’ll go back to the bad jokes next post, okay.

        I agree.

having been a program director for a con, most writers are fans and the actors are just people. Some are fans, some are new (or old) enough at it to bask on the attention, some small few are just full of themselves, but most just want to do a really good job and want people to recognize that they did a good job.

I swear – i’d guess something like seven feet – certainly well over six feet. She’s at least a head-and-a-half taller than Monica.

Jump back to the site home page, and take a look at the drawing of Euryale that Pablo has up for bidding on eBay. It portrays Euryale with quite normal-looking human legs, so she’s at least capable of that form.

Whether she can also assume a snake-like form, is something we do not yet know.

    • Fairportfan
      November 3, 2011, 12:58 pm | # | Reply

Except in a Harryhausen film, the Gorgons are general portrayed as humanoid, with legs.

It’s Melusine that has the snake hips (and tail…)

      But only on Saturdays.

      • Fairportfan
        November 3, 2011, 1:00 pm | #

There’s a fascinating novel, <a href="“>The Wandering Unicorn, by Manuel Mujica Láinez, that tells Melusine’s story.

      • Dave
        November 3, 2011, 10:33 pm | #

        That’s actually a mistranslation.

A melusine’s transformation into snakelike form, is similar to Euryale’s gorgon/transformation effect. It’s primarily a defensive reaction, evolved to protect them against attacks by unprincipled, hairy, horny barbarian men.

It puts the attacker into a satyr daze.

Wow. Ain’t she cuter than a box of baby snakes. (bay-bee snaaaAAAaakes/look around there’s a couple right near me….)

I’d guess her accent is ancient Greek filtered through prolonged sojourns across the southern U.S. Depending on what climates are comfortable for her breed(s) of snakes.

      November 3, 2011, 4:58 pm | # | Reply

Euryale lives in Minnesota, I doubt she is adversely affected by climate changes and I would also guess that unlike ordinary snakes she is warm blooded. But as faer as her accent, it is likely that you are very corrrect, seeing that she may have been around for millenia (and all the time reboots).

      2. There is a Pun Jar. If you have a pun, and you would like to share, you must somehow make a donation to the Pun Jar. (Note: no real monetary value necessary, but I’m sure Paul would appreciate it.)
      3. If you are completely lost, you are welcome to sit in the Confusion Corner. Its a corner in Mucho Mocha that has a table based on Hammer-Space technology. If your confused, chances are someone else is already there, with one of Becky’s fine pastries…
