Nope. There was a whole arc dedicated to finding and destroying the machine that maintained the loop. And the loop was set to repeat in 2012, so it would have happened by now.
No – “mortal” means you will die eventually, of natural causes. “Immortal” means you will (theoretically) live forever if nothing kills you.
Given a healing factor, it might mean you never die, no matter what. Otherwise, it just means you won’t die of old age.
Stheno and Eurayle are immortal, Medusa wasn’t. Apparently (based on what Eurayle told Shelly once, Perseus didn’t kill Medusa; they faked her death and ran off together and set up in business – stone garden gnomes, she thought.)
Zed is also used to phonetically denote Zero. So the program is shown in the file-structure as “Castela 01” or “castela01” depending on how much autonomy the AI/OS is allowed in naming.
I’ve said that Phix sounds as if she learnt English from a Tommy in Egypt around World War Two (and Paul, i think, says she sounds like Alex Kingston – personally, i hear Eve Arden’s voice), and Eurayle comes across like Mike Nesmith’s older sister with that West Texas accent.
I’m thinking the closest contemporary usage might be a Fortran FORMAT statement, used to control how displayed or printed data is presented; or a SAVE AS command in Libre Office Writer, whereby I can save a document in Open Document format (ODT), or in Classic Word format (DOC), or in current Word format (DOCX), or in Rich Text format (RTF) {which is the one I normally use}, etc.
In this case format seems to mean taking the active program and making it able to be saved into a permanently running program. When she is not in the room she may still be active.
Format and store, not format. Kind of similar to forming (formatting?) a query in SQL, I suppose…create and store the parameters to always reproduce the same result.
And did ANYONE else end with the thought, are her tears salty fluid, a sweet sap, or simply poisonous?
Had a long post, but browser had a fart-fit after hitting the post button, basically it was about agreeing about all the feels and how Stela will eventually tell Sali about LeuGram, because maybe knowing that there will always be someone there will help Sali (specially seeing how they are based on her murdered mother)
Well, even if the program does run without her there (which is not a given at this point), if it ever becomes a problem, Castela can probably just visit this room again and say something like “Q, abort and delete the program labelled castela zed one.”
She just ensured her continued existence but will she be a save file, like a pop-up-book facsimile of life….or does she become an autonomous part of the library? Does she have will of her own or is she simply a compilation of personal facts projected to approximate a dead woman? Bla, I should just read, as usual, and keep my thoughts to myself.
I think the word Paul was looking for was “Queue”, not “Q”. “Queueing” the file would mean to put it on the output queue to be sent to the file, once it’s formatted. The file name is “Castela01”, btw, “Z” is pronounced “Zed” in Canadian English, but is written “Z”. “Zed” is an old Computer term for “0” or what is usually called “Zero”.
Or indicating an incoming command, like how Apple users belt out with Siri, or Android users can say “Ok Google” to activate voice commands. It IS the Q-room after all.
Right, Phix told Atsali at the beginning that this is the Q room. So starting your command with “Q” is simply how you get its attention. Nothing to do with queues.
Going through another archive binge, I think this is why Phix had her go through the room to get her answers…not just because it collected all the various sources together, but because the room could survive her trauma induced outburst and provide a simulation to comfort her in the aftermath.
Looks like Castela has a very long life ahead of her.
That wasn’t a prediction. That was hyperbole. Phix once said Castela and Atsali were mortal. I don’t know if that still holds.
Mortal just means that, with enough cellular damage, you can die, not how long your life is.
…do you know how hard it is to kill a friggin’ thornbush? bloody things live for EVER… :)P
That depends. Is this world still on the loop that was established earlier in the comic
Nope. There was a whole arc dedicated to finding and destroying the machine that maintained the loop. And the loop was set to repeat in 2012, so it would have happened by now.

It’s straight from classical mythology that Medusa was mortal and her sisters weren’t.
And one extra person to help, in addition to Katherine and the aunts.
Leucoisa had a British or Canadian background?
Leucoisa and Atsali are Greek names.
Noted and agreed. But ZED? Common usage in British and Canadian English, and likely elsewhere in the Commonwealth. But here in the U.S., we use ZEE.
Zed is also used to phonetically denote Zero. So the program is shown in the file-structure as “Castela 01” or “castela01” depending on how much autonomy the AI/OS is allowed in naming.

You can never have too many mamas. <3
`Depends on what the mamas are like. 😏
Would if ‘stela will share this program with Atsali, or will she hold back on sharing.
Probly not for a while. Pretty sure that whole time-frame is walled off in psychological defenses in her mind.
I dunno… It may be more harmful fir at sail to have that contact than not. I keep thinking of the mirror from Harry Potter….
wait… Format? B-but that means… *insert sad puppy eyes here*
Format probably doesn’t mean there what it means in our world, computer wise….. or that is what I’m hoping anyway.
Yeah, think of it instead as ‘Index the Database prior to Saving’ type thing. Not ‘overwrite the storage medium’…
In this case format seems to mean taking the active program and making it able to be saved into a permanently running program. When she is not in the room she may still be active.
This comic just gets better & better, which is quite something given that it grabbed me from the get-go.
Yeah, I liked the fermented bananas too!!!

And did ANYONE else end with the thought, are her tears salty fluid, a sweet sap, or simply poisonous?
I would think her tears would be painful to others. We may never really know…
Tears of Castela- contact transfer agent for emotions? Sort of like a liquid version of the gun from Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?
The…feeeeeeels…
Feels…are too…powerful…*cries*
Had a long post, but browser had a fart-fit after hitting the post button, basically it was about agreeing about all the feels and how Stela will eventually tell Sali about LeuGram, because maybe knowing that there will always be someone there will help Sali (specially seeing how they are based on her murdered mother)
I can’t help noticing the person created by the program just manipulated Castela into making her permanent, hence the hyper-smile in panel two.
More like made it possible for Casyela to access her in the future.
How does one exclude the other? “Let me continue to exist, and you can come and see me once in a while. Like, you know, in a thousand years.”
Well, even if the program does run without her there (which is not a given at this point), if it ever becomes a problem, Castela can probably just visit this room again and say something like “Q, abort and delete the program labelled castela zed one.”
That … got me RIGHT in the feels. DEAD center. BANG .. I iz dyed.
Also … it is weird that a sentient program just .. um .. gave itself more life this way?
I take it back; this has the Star Trek Holodeck beat ALL to Hell!!!

Gawd, I can’t believe I still remember all that.

Panel 2: Leucoisa’s eyes are tearing up. 😢
Panel 3: Crying tears from Leucoisa. 😭
Going through another archive binge, I think this is why Phix had her go through the room to get her answers…not just because it collected all the various sources together, but because the room could survive her trauma induced outburst and provide a simulation to comfort her in the aftermath.
…and Castela begins to grow up … even if she doesn’t realise it yet.
