We had one week of swimming a year in middle school. I was not about to take a shower in the locker room so I just did not go to gym for a week. There were other places in the school I could go and not be really noticed, empty classrooms, study halls, bathrooms and unmonitored halls, and apparently no one noticed or cared. Never set foot in the showers or pool.
