These states of being are not mutually exclusive. Someone should Venn diagram that out for Castela. Might not change her feelings much, it should hold up a mirror of self-awareness that will eventually help her work through it.
I think, somewhat obviously, Castela is wrestling with the reality that nearly all the other people & friends around her are suddenly in relationships of varying degrees and she’s feeling a bit isolated and left out of the fun. Projecting this hard illuminates, somewhat, her perception of how certain relationships work, and the role she desperately does/does not want to play herself.
Teenagers just getting used to the idea of sex can have strange hangups about it. The idea that something is wrong with enjoying sex, or enjoying it too much, doesn’t just come from religion. It comes naturally, at a certain age.
I can’t say that I agree with that last sentence. Those who grow up in a more sex-positive environment tend to be better adjusted about it. That being said, think about how sex is treated in our society. It’s everywhere as a marketing tool, but still manages to be treated as this great taboo.
kinda my thoughts with her words in this comic, we know very little about Bryn, but maybe Pickle senses something in her, and it’s setting her off. ~<3
Words are for communicating but that particular word seems to primarily be used by those without the ability to communicate in a manner that is respectful of others. Given the age Pickle is represented at I think the word is chosen specifically to demonstrate that she is someone still learning to communicate with others. She has demonstrated a lack of communicative skill in the past.
Actually, that particular word (or the translated equivalent) is perfectly acceptable for day to day usage without vulgar associations in a number of places throughout the world. We puritanically oriented USA denizens have pretty well turned anything related to sex into the most horrible of horrors or whispered forbidden jokes, but that doesn’t apply everywhere.
I was brought up that way too, but after my early teens exposure to other parts of the world through enjoying foreign books & movies expanded my outlook quite a bit. Then later on I traveled throughout north & central America and to several parts of Europe and had my mind popped open even further. Yes, some cultures are even more repressed than we are, but many are not as hung up on body or sexual concepts.
That word (you did mean “fuck”, didn’t you?) is used by pretty much everybody, now. Unfortunately, it’s used more for shock value than meaning, which wears out the word and weakens communication. Poets dispute about it frequently. Castela, however, used it in it’s exact meaning, and so put her meaning across.
Agreed. George Carlin does a routine on how it can be used in so many different ways. Most of which have nothing to do with it’s intended meaning. So many people have gotten wrapped up in the shock value of being “rebellious” enough to use it freely that it’s applied to situations it has no reason to be and gets used pointlessly in sentences where it’s presence makes no sense. That whole culture of “I don’t care…I say what I want” was in part the usage that’s disrespectful of anyone in earshot that I was alluding to. It is true that Pickle used it correctly. I hadn’t really considered that.
I disagree with Stali on this. She is currently Pickle’s principal. This can lead to a lot of issues at school. As I said before, if the schools version of the PTA finds out, or other teachers find out… well I knew some teachers that even with a principal that was a really good and fair person teachers were nervous about what would happen if they gave poor grades to the principals kid. In a case like this where it’s not the principals own child but one of a parent they are currently dating, there will be a perception that she is being treated unfairly. In fact some schools even have Principals sign contracts saying they won’t date the parents of students in their school. So yeah… Pickle was being overly harsh but I still give her the point.
If Kath is happy, the Jaguar Girl is happy, her Golems are happy, a certain Demigoddess Sphinx is happy. If they are happy, the rest of the world will survive another day.
At work, one of the owners just started having his 15 year old daughter work there just to gain some work experience and have a little of her own money. Even though absolutely no favoritism has been shown, the rumors started the first day she was training:
“Watch, they’ll put her in charge right away”
“She’ll get all the best shifts”
etc.
OH! I just thought of something else too. How close was that vacation to when Stali got on the flight team after that whole mess? And there were pics too if I recall. If anyone outside the fam sees that and remembers what happened, a lot of people will wonder if she got a slap on the wrist cause the Principal and her mom were “Friends” and not because she was young and being dumb for a minute.
Bryn was at least a tad bit out of line teasing Castela, one of her students, about making out with said student’s Mom. Yes, Castela started it (Oh my innocent eyes, or words to that effect) but someone’s the adult here.
The experession on Bryn’s face as she asked didn’t make any impression on you? The art goes along with the words, you know — at least, that’s how comics are supposed to work.
Not to mention the mere mindbomb when you consider for the first time that your mom might have an active sex life. Castella doesn’t even have the benefit of reasoning out “Well, I’M here so that automatically means she did it at least ONCE……..” because she wasn’t created that way, and she’s adopted, and she’s well aware of those facts.
I have a feeling this is more to do with something she is picking up from Bryn and nothing to do with her ability accept her mom is a sexual creature, just like many others in the world.
Actually, up till this whole thing with Bryn Andersen started, I thought Katherine was straight. But I might’ve missed some signs, if any were there—besides, nobody goes around advertising it, and the stereotypical assumptions can easily be wrong.
To be honest, I always got an asexual vibe from Katherine. At least her getting together with Bryn doesn’t feel as forced as it did when Monica suddenly got together with Georgette.
If that’s how she feels around Bryn, let her have her fun! They’ll even out as the relationship goes on…
Happy doesn’t equal giggling fuck-bunny?

Seeing Kath acting all giggly with her new paramour is making the stink pickle jealous.
Not the kind of language I expected. Wow.

Or maybe Castela thought being a giggling fuck bunny put her mom in a position of weakness.
This could be abandonment anxiety as well. Remember Castela went through a long period in her life thinking her parents dumped her.
She may want to go to the Library and boot up Astali’s mom. Might be a nice thing to take Astali with her.
I just hope it is not that she is right and something about Bryn is not good for Kath.
Dang. Now I’m worried too.

What she is sensing, is her mom being happy with someone who is not her
Somebody get Pickle a bar of soap. She needs to wash her mouth out.
Why? Words are for communicating, and Pickle communicated her meaning very clearly.

Oops. “Its”, not “it’s”.

Alas, love does odd things to people (one reason I put up shield against Cupid) 😉

❗2nded!!❗

So, yeah.

Teasing? What teasing. Bryn was just inquiring about Castela’s state of mind.
The experession on Bryn’s face as she asked didn’t make any impression on you? The art goes along with the words, you know — at least, that’s how comics are supposed to work.
I think the biggest question that Castela should ask herself is, “How can I presume to know *more* than my own mom what it is that makes her happy?”
I can’t imagine Katherine ever being a…what Castela said last.
Instincts at work?
I have a feeling this is more to do with something she is picking up from Bryn and nothing to do with her ability accept her mom is a sexual creature, just like many others in the world.
I’m kinda with Castela on this one.
