I’m really lovin’ Tina’s look in the first panel , and Shelly’s in the second .

That’s all we need is nervous Shelly again…

And Tina deftly changes the subject away from herself, putting Shelly on the defensive.

And what’s wrong with a strictly sexual relatiionship anyway? Why does everything HAVE to lead to a full blown relationship?

      November 30, 2010, 12:21 am | # | Reply

If she’s OK with her relationship being only about sex, the guilty look on her face in the first panel betrays her true feelings…

      • SoWhyMe
        November 30, 2010, 1:03 am | #

But how much of that guilt is being foisted on her by Tina and probably others? Would she be that way if everyone just left her alone about it?

        November 30, 2010, 1:23 am | #

I would venture a “No” in response to that given what inner hang-ups she has about being abandoned.

I’m not entirely sure yet that Tina’s changed the subject. This page could very well be a lead-up to “And that’s why I haven’t had sex with anyone post demon takeover.”

I’m guessing no. You should always have an “Oh dang! The fecal mater has hit the rotating air moving device” plan, because having a hair do that makes part of your head look like a plucked chicken won’t fix the problem.

Bud would be the consultant on those issues, given her handling of the early morning sonic boom she caused awhile back.

      • Eee
        November 30, 2010, 10:26 am | #

I would think more Jin. Bud may be the smartest of the GGG and the fastest thinking on her feet, but Jin has thousands of years of being sneaky and covert. Bud and Brandi, on the other hand, only have the experience of the most recent time cycle (during which they were mostly Weapons of Mass Destruction and guards, not stealth weapons). They’re learning fast, but I imagine Jin is still the one to go to for cunningness and contingency plans.

Pity she’s got bats in her belfry…

Shelley’s current hairstyle was quite prominent around 1983 among my punk rock friends, including my sister, who had her hair like that for awhile…I’m guessing it was her way of fighting back against having to go to a Catholic high school…

…and PS I like it. What’s with the harsh judgements on hairstyles in this place?

      • UncleRice
        November 30, 2010, 8:11 pm | #

I’m a product of the 80’s too. The partially shaved heads were ugly then too. Your sister proves my point though. If she wasn’t rebelling against something, would she have worn that hairdo?

This is indeed a big issue, ut I think Shelley’s more concerned about continually being busted by Tina about the shallowness of her relationship with Justin…it just seems that since she bluted out that bunch of nonsense about being afraid of scaring him away that she’s refused to get really in too terribly deep.

    • Jabberwonky
      November 30, 2010, 12:28 am | # | Reply

Shelly’s had abandonment issues going back to when she was 10. You don’t just flip a switch and turn that off. But given the conversations in the past, Shelly’s had plenty of lover’s in the past. The fact we’ve never seen a boyfriend until Justin shows how shallow those were.
She is making progress, if slowly.

Ya know, I kinda hate to say it, but things in Wapsiville have gotten boring of late. I still enjoy the art and dialog in each and every strip, but the pace has slowed to a crawl since the Nudge incident (and it didn’t last very long). I do hope it will pick up again soon.

    • Jabberwonky
      November 30, 2010, 9:03 am | # | Reply

It may not be exciting, but I am far from bored. I love the character development in these phases.

      • SoWhyMe
        November 30, 2010, 9:50 am | #

I agree with that, but the development comes in such tiny doses as to be excruciatingly drawn out, like listening to a person with a severe stutter tell a tale. It is often simply left hanging to boot. Not unlike a Soap Opus. I’m not saying it needs to be a non-stop action-screaming-fest like Girl Genius (heaven et. al. forbid), but a bit more depth of development, per dose, would be nice.

        November 30, 2010, 1:17 pm | #

OK exactly how did I get drawn into this argument? 😉 I think the pacing problem is partially due to the current 2-panel format that Paul is using to make the comics look better.

    • SoWhyMe
      November 30, 2010, 9:57 am | # | Reply

I wonder who the wrong folks might be? The Men In Black? The average person who hears the tale simply won’t believe it and write you off as a teller of tall tales, a joker, or a nut job. No one can send you to the rubber room hotel just for your believing something like that or relating what happens in the Library or demon realm.

      • ProleBoi
        November 30, 2010, 9:19 pm | #

Or perhaps, whoever crafted (coalesced?) the Library. And don’t forget about those politicians that’re occasionally mentioned, usually by Jin & Maya…

      • ProleBoi
        November 30, 2010, 9:25 pm | #

After what just happened to Nudge, though, I wonder if the Collective doesn’t have self-preservation on its mind… what if, to them, the ‘wrong person’ might be a colleague of Phix’s?

Monica was also a minor at that time. An adult can only be committed against one’s will if a threat to one’s self or others.

      • Eee
        November 30, 2010, 9:37 pm | #

Not to mention, M’s now got three protectors who can’t be stopped or harmed, and against whom all the power on Earth is meaningless. To paraphrase the movie “V”, the group should not be afraid of the wrong people. The wrong people should be afraid of the group.

        December 1, 2010, 8:56 am | #

And she can >POIT< at will. For example, out of the room that's comfortably small with rubber lining the walls and into the office of the doctor that just saw her there. "That was fun, doctor, but we need to get serious."

Paul forgive me for not mentioning just how good an artist you are often enough. I love Tina’s eyes in the last panel and her raised hand. Shelly’s non-plussed reaction is great too.(You can see the gears spinning over the implications.)

Of course there’s a plan. It involves setting the curtains on fire and collecting from the insurance company.

      November 30, 2010, 10:32 am | # | Reply

At least that’s better than deliberately breaking your arm. Tina’s a fine one to talk of plans. That was a bit extreme.

        February 14, 2012, 12:40 pm | #

Re: Tina breaking her own arm. First, she was improvising, but there may have been another factor there.

Remember, Tina had just met Phix, whose mere presence was terrifying almost beyond the capacity for rational thought. In the end, she was spared, apparently (at least in part) because she’d been helping Monica.

Tina may have been feeling the need to demonstrate to Phix just how total her commitment to Monica really was, and seized on the most extreme means available. If M. and Amanda’s argument had happened a day or two later, she might not have been quite so…zealous.

Better than I would do. Setting the insurance on fire and collecting the curtains worked out, but it really wasn’t worth it in the end. But, they were nice curtains.

Was it the 3-Point hair that gave it away … or at least reminded you of Jin’s look?

    • SoWhyMe
      November 30, 2010, 1:49 pm | # | Reply

More the facial expression than the hair. I believe there are other comics with that expression as well. I didn’t realize how similar the hair was until I found the other image. The hair was a fluke because Jin’s hair “style” was actually just bed hair on that occasion. Shelly’s hair always looks like bed hair, apparently.

    1) Who do we think the wrong folks might be? Kukulcan? Other immortals? Mortal political leaders that realize the power they have?

    2) She’s only been dating Justin since May and I’m guessing he’s still adjusting to her dominant personality. Letting him in on the supernatural aspects of herself and her friends is going to be a big step in their relationship. I don’t think she wants to scare him away and so she’s holding out for a bit.

    • SoWhyMe
      November 30, 2010, 1:54 pm | # | Reply

Currently Shelly’s involvment in the supernatural stuff is at a low ebb currently in any event. Thus far, the new stuff doesn’t include her, so she does not have to make up anything for Justin’s benefit.

Has anyone thought that “wrong people” could be, for example, other decendants and trustees of the ooooooolden days… they knew how to make golems back then, so why would Jin, Bud and Brandi be the only still existing ones? And considering the time device, what other sophisticated machinery there might be, in the hands of “wrong” people who shouldn’t find out about our beloved girls?
