I get the strong impression that Cricket is the only fae who can be trusted to handle magic around the Wapsi crowd. Shrinking Dietzel _was_ an accident, after all, and she’s come a long way since Monica started mentoring her.
Well, the only reason the magic ring didn’t work the way it should is that Digit found it and played with it. One assumes it would have worked perfectly on Dietzel, its intended recipient.
I just noticed that the strip has shown us 3 ancient language styles. Glyph, the Eldrich tounge used by Cori’s friend and now this one which I am guessing is a root of Celtic.
Did a *very* quick google search and the results lead me to believe that it is Irish in origin as Dave has already pointed out.
Wiktionary indicates that it does indeed mean “change” and is therefor appropriate and very well used here.
Definitely seems like a magical word in this setting.
There is also a band going by the name Athrú recently.
Also noting that just because it’s on the interwebs, the definition may NOT be correct, but it’s the most reasonable thing I’ve found so far.
‘Making YOU life’ in top panel to ‘making YOUR life’. Not criticizing… just an observation… unless I’m reading it wrong.
Still hopes this turns out OK. Looks like her hair was blasted!
I’m suggesting that the word ‘appearance’, while used OK in it’s second appearance, might better be substituted by a Synonym in it’s first usage… (in the Third Panel…)
Dang! A Monday cliffhanger!
Reprising my post from the forum…
Hurray for making Digit’s life “less rough”, I guess…
That… almost looks painful…
I hope it comes with an instruction manual…
Am I the only one who thinks Cricket’s mother should be here supervising this?
Uh, no . . . you aren’t . . .
Well, Cricket’s mother is a queen. The problems of spiders are probably beneath her notice.
Nope if lore has taught us nothing it is that the further you keep the fey away the better you are, especially the royals.

I like the way the spell looks especially with the word going across it; it reminds me of quite a lot of manga/anime spells. 😀
Hope this works out better than the magic ring. (Glad to catch this before I go into work, too—night shift with no Internet access till I get home.)

Well, Dietzel might be a scared teenage girl right now instead.

It seems to be in Modern Irish Celtic: “athrú” means “change”. I didn’t find it in one online dictionary of (reconstructed) proto-Celtic.
Breton?
Doesn’t seem to be. Breton is in a different (Brythonic) branch of the Celtic language family than Irish (Goidelic).
The closest relative I see to the Irish word is “atharraich” in Scottish Gaelic. I didn’t see anything close in Manx (also Goidelic).
However, I speak none of these, and so opine from great ignorance here.

More and more inclned to doodle my dragon lady hanging out at the library
Please do so
OH GAWD! CALISTA JUST FLASHED DIGIT! *RIMSHOT*
The spell word seems to mean “Change!”
Or, as Paul helpfully titled the strip, “Transform!”
That’s its meaning in modern Irish Celtic… “change” (as a noun, if I’m understanding what I read correctly)
The word actually seems to be the imperative form of the verb. Going by Google Translate. I’m no expert in Irish.
“Limited” ability? Wonder what exactly that means……
We’ll find out tonight…
Probably that she can’t change into a fifty foot dragon-fly
no warning just BAM!….yeah this can’t go wrong
I figure it’s like ripping off a bandaid. there’s no real way to get ready for it (I mean, what should one expect, anyway?). best just to do it.

By the power of Greyskull! u have the powerrrr!!!!
Wait, did Cricket smack Digit in the face with the spell? o_O
Waiting for her first pron flick in a few years.
Oh. Seeing Cricket cast I guess that Ms. Alder is fae too. With the rep fae have no wonder she’d want to keep that private.
I wonder Diget will learn to speak Glyph.
So . . . if that’s fae magic, does that mean Ms. Alger is fae?
Far magic started this whole affair, so Fae magic had better finish it…
