And tasty comestibles fresh from the oven.
They have an oven?
They have a pastry chef. I hope she has an oven.
If she doesn’t, those are Limburger popovers…
Point granted. Some small places, OTOH, buy from larger off-site bakeries; Becky could simply be an employee. But, as I said, point granted – I’d rather they bake there, if only for the smell (combined with the coffee)….Dammit, now I want breakfast.
There’s fresh Limburger popovers at Mucho Mocha…
This one and the next two are the ‘Becky’ arc.
(can three strips be an arc?)
Oh? I thought they looked like cinnamon rolls. There’s no such thing as “Popovers” in Limburg, believe me, warm waffles with cherries and cream? Yes, custard buns? Yup that too…”Wieckse Witte” yuppaah”…popovers? Nope. My ex was from Limburg.. 🙂
Limburger as in stinky cheese…
Jay-Em: trouble is, most stuff has its name changed… In UK, you have ‘french mustard’ – the same stuff in france is called ‘english mustard’ !!! also, ‘french letter’ is called ‘capote anglaise’ in france! 😀
Hm. I thought Becky was afternoon shift, but the clock says 7:00. She’s either staying late or came early.
As to whether she knows about Tina or not, I would assume she’s got some idea her boss isn’t exactly normal, but she may not have been told all the details.
The clock always says 7:05. (I think it’s broken) But you’d want your pastry chef in early to sell breakfast goodies.
Maybe the clock key Tina gave to Brandi wound that clock, too.
She kept the part of the key that winds the clock.
I think Tina’s most human moment so far was when, after saying to herself that the clock didn’t feel important anymore, she went ahead and wound it anyway.
Becky probably has a split shift. She likely does a lot of prep work in the evenings.. some pastries need 12 hrs to rise and such… and then comes back in the mornings to do the baking.
“Time to make the doughnuts…”
(for those of us who can remember that series of commercials)
she’s probably dropping off the morning’s fresh pastries.
Meanwhile, back at the other plot line….
Which has skipped ahead a little so we don’t get to hear the end of the conversation between Shelly and Bud.
So the babushka look is permanent?
Are You telling me You do not like Doo-rags? I think they always look charming.
I agree (not in general, but in this situation). Tina looks adorable in a bandana/scarf/whatever she’s using on her head. 😛
Not complaining. Just wondering.
In my state (probably others too) you are required to wear a hair covering.
Not going to swear to it, I only spend about 3 weeks a year at home, but the baristas in Texas don’t wear hair nets or anything. Maybe only preparing foods…
It solves SO many overdue-hair-washing problems . . . .
“Wind-girl”. Interesting turn of phrase there, Tina…
And could be taken totally the wrong way.
If Shelly has a penchant for Burrito’s, then, Yes..
is that relating to the riddle phix asked shelly?
wasn’t her answer to that ‘the wind’ where as monica was ‘the sun’ ?
It’s not somuch ariddle as a “character-test” Every answer is correct, and tells Phix what book, or object is needed at that moment.
And with Shelly’s wild-streak, “wind-girl” is pretty apt..
I believe it relates to the Kanji symbol Shelly wore while practicing her archery.
Agreed. And to her answer to Phix’s riddle.
Wonder if the wind has any significance in Shelly’s tribal background?
Ah, now I see. Monica’s answer was sunshine. She is often referred to as sunshine. Shelly’s was the wind, relating to her personality as well. So the answer given by the individual gives Phix an insight to the respondent’s personality. The riddle, for Phix anyway, is a tool and not just some pointless question just for fun. We never got to Katherine’s answer since she fainted. Offhand I’m not sure what it may have been.
Fainting may have been an answer.
We need more Katherine.
Good point. I wonder what other answers there could be? Moonlight would work I suppose as a variation of sunshine (which it technically still is). Would darkness work? Maybe rain/snow/sleet?
Well, Comanches are from the Oklahoma/Texas area. Y’know, where the wind comes sweeping down the Plains, knocks you on your rump, and tries to steal your wallet. Or, does that just apply to where I’m at right now?
The wind has been ferocious around these parts for the past three days. But it has calmed down this afternoon.
Was windy yesterday in the lower end of the People’s range (i.e., Comanche County, Texas). Today, not so much.
Away out here they got a name
For rain and wind and fire
The rain is Tess, the fire Joe,
And they call the wind “wind”
(Bob and Ray)
Just how lonely does a cowpoke out on the prarie have to be to name that stuff?
“I know, it’s been really dry lately and I’m glad ya came by and all … but, damnit Tess, d’ya have to keep puttin’ out Joe?”
Believe me, goes for The Netherlands too. 5 beaufort is a “calm day” overhere 😆
It is no coincidence that my forefathers , on a windy day, thought “Hmmm…should do something with that wind” and proceeded to build windmills to pump out part of the sea….
Ah, the old “tell them the truth, they won’t believe it” line.
And I’d forgotten about Becky.
Say it ain’t so! Too cute and a pastry chef? I could elope with that woman…
Doh! Wrong avatar…
Huh? what’s wrong with a nicely tanned Brandi in bikini??? (good choice of skin-tone) She can be around all day, as far as I am concerned..
I just use the different Gravatars similar to emoticons. Brandi is explanations, Bud is regular, and Jin is silliness. For now, anyway.
Ah..I see. Yes, Brandi is the explaining type.. Mom and tutor rolled in one, nicely tan package…
Aaaaand now that you’ve focused my attention on Brandi, they’ve changed…
For explaining, I think I’d use the last frame of one:
Or this one:
Okay, on Becky, they’re freckles. On ‘Cheerleader Barbie’ Nudge, they’re ______.
Orrrr..pimples poking through, nicely yellow and shining, about to go off. Which makes hitting her quite the liability…*visualizing* O_o eeeeeewwww…..
Osteoderms, like an alligator?
Points to make you forcus on them, and not what she is doing?
Faux-freckles, to make you assume she’s harmless (because freckled people are doofs?)
Tina, “Whos the Boss!?”
It’s interesting to see Tina play both sides of the Human vs Not Human card so smoothly. She feels the need to keep explaining to Shelly that she isn’t human, and at the same time continue to keep Becky out of the loop. Then again, one has to wonder how much she has actually heard from time to time.
She as in Becky.
becky says tina makes out she isn’t human so err… same thing 🙂
Whatever front Tina put up, Becky has already pierced it. Becky might not know the specifics about the Demon Collective, but she has, apparently, only met goodness from Tina.
There is difference between the tyrant “never stops working” boss and the Demon Collective “never stops working” boss. I’m pretty sure Tina is trying to keep the former with Becky. Which when most people say that, they always know its not the complete truth. However, I doubt Tina upon hiring Becky said ” Welcome to your new job, where its more about client confidentiality than the FBI, so keep work at work, By the way, I’m a Demon Collective! I’ve been dead for x- amount of years and can snap into a blind rage at any moment if the wrong person walks in, but I try my best to be nice to everyone, and to prove it i am going to make you the best cup of coffee you’ve ever had.”
If you’re boss said that to you, would you honestly take that cup of coffee?
I’d just assume she has a wicked sense of humor. It would be a plus on my scorecard. OTOH, if she suddenly proved it by showing a demon, complete with huge black wings like she has done before, well … aww, who am I kidding, it would still be a plus! And if a female, as in this case, a confirmation of my general view of women.
hmm, I think it is a ‘secretary/PA vs Boss’ standoff…
PA knows she can *ruin* the boss’s good work, Boss has no clue how to work the ‘typing-thingamajig’ , so makes sure she is happy!!! 🙂
Tina knows she gets *the best* pastry, no questions asked… 🙂
That would be an awesome arc! Tina is out somewhere, and so Monica comes in and gets her coffee from Becky. Who causally name-drops all the recent developments, as she’s been in the back room for a good part of them, and has heard just about everything. Nice recap, and more chances to draw M flabbergasted.
I have a feeling if Becky stays frequent, thats exactly what will happen.
presently suits her?
she means at any second she might just change her mind about the ‘running the cafe’ thing and just go nuts advising people to jump off bridges and run into buses?
Nope. That would get her into trouble with the Demon Overseers that culled the “Queen of Sorts”.
Besides, she already stated that she likes being good, despite her warning that “One can do good while being evil”
I agree with Jay-Em. I think Tina just feels it’s important for everyone to remember that she’s not a tame lion…err…collective of demons. 😛
Funny though, that can be said of about everyone. Everybody has his/her “snapping point” by which they can get dangerous.
Tina has only a human physique , she cankill if provoked, but so can we. It is technically a bigger risk that the Golem-girls can devour complete planetary systems if provoked sufficiently, than Tina’s demons going bezerk, I guess.
Well, there was that spider-zapper incident, and the creepy-hands-with-eyes thing…
You know, that can be read as Becky knowing what Tina really is. Is she in the loop?
Heh yeah jsut add even more planes and strings to this storyline XD
Whats next? Making her a witch maybe? 😀
There is more going on “off stage” than on it, sometimes!
Heh… Wondered where Becks got to.
“It presently suits me”???
I doubt it. The real manipulator, Nudge, is gone, and even she wasn’t truly evil, just pestering and irritating, like the classic trolls. As I see it, The Demons currently in Wapsi-square are no more intentionally evil than an average human. The “queen’ that ran amock, and arguably could be called “intentionally evil” has already been neutralized.
If I got to believe Benthem, or Mill (utilitarianism) everybody is un-evil when it suits them…. You can add Nietsche’s insights on morality for the real mysoginists here…. 😆
Nah..nice try Tina, but You are good at heart. Although Demon “goodness’ isn’t always directly understandable.
I think Shelly, flaws and all, has hit the nail on the head.
If Tina is embarrassed by a violent outburst, she isn’t as evil as she likes to think. Really evil people see violence, -direct, or indirect- as a means to their own goals, and their goals alone. True evil is powered by ultimate ego-centrism at the cost of all around. That description isn’t Tina..
As is with the rest of the Wapsi-Crew, this is a tale about redemption.
<i? "… a tale about redemption …"
I wondered if I was the only one who’d thought of that …
Nah, I was just stating the obvious…, to me at least.
Not to mention the Pinocchio story where the golem girls are concerned;
All comedy is, at heart, about redemption. Tragedy is, at heart, about damnation.
(And that means that we’re not sure what history is about until we get to the end of the story. Which could be any of 56+ endings in this world…)
“History repeats itself twice. Once as tragedy, and once as farce.”
I forget who said it…
Karl Marx, according to Google.
So, what are the other 54+ repetitions? Repetitio ad nausea?
Love Tina’s look with the head scarf. Combined with the low-cut top . . . rawr.
The eyes are up here, buddy.
The spiraling, swirling vortex eeeyyyyeeeesss….
Um, what was I saying?
So is Becky a red-head? (freckles)
Language drift … here we would say “pass herself off as a tyrant” but that could be the french canadian roots, eh!
Most USAians i know would either say “paint herself as” or “pass herself off as”…
It would be either: Paint yourself as… or Pass yourself off as…
Am I the only one to notice the interesting design on the counter?
That’s been around for a while now. I believe it’s first appearance was here:
Opps. That should have gone with Bill Hunsicker’s comment, above.
Hey. It looks as if someone’s moonlighting in another comic strip…
Is that a representation of Tepoz’ on the tablecloth???
Did we come in at the middle of the conversation with Tina and Shelly in the first frame?
Don’t think so, hence the “Hey There Miss Shelly”
I just have to add how sad it is that the comments stopped at 99.
Here’s another musing as I was watching the Langoliers.
Kimber Riddle looks like she could make an interesting Tina if Wapsi Square went to movie or something…
Second mention of wind in a few days. Could that be foreshadowing?
