She’s more in-tune with Monica’s friends than Monica is.

Monica is too close and paying attention to the wrong things to notice. She’s hardly unique in that, of course.
Also… super-shy Katherine has spent most of her life keeping her mouth shut, and just watching and listening to the people around her. Her observation skills are honed sharp.
