That doesn’t actually surprise me. Formed plastic often ends up with burrs or jutting seams if they’re not carefully removed later in production. Also, it’s more brittle. If it breaks, you could have jagged edges that will poke through fabric. Metal mostly just bends under that kind of stress, unless repeated for a very long time.
I had a this happen with a pair of boots. They had steel nails in the heels and my coat had steel snaps that set off the wand. Canadian airport security gave me really dirty looks but that was about all.

Sometimes it’s plastic, sometimes it’s metal. Metal gives more support and surpristingly doesn’t rip through the fabric NEARLY as much as plastic.
