To answer your question: since as far as I can recall Jacqui is not part of the “in the know” human community, she couldn’t be told Digit’s real nature… and so Amanda would be the next likely victim of self-induced panic.
Monica has had some angst, for years, about that whole “Shelly stuck a knife blade into my head, and didn’t bother to warn me first” episode. She wasn’t crazy about the “Shelly provoked Bud into punching my heart right out of my chest and killing me” bit, either.
I think she just got her payback. With compound interest (or, since Digit is a spider, “compound i’s”).
Well, technically, Monica is Digit’s guardian, not her adoptive mother. This makes Digit her ward, not her daughter. If I recall the way the Guardian/ward relationship works legally, Jet would be nothing special to Digit, just her guardian’s significant other.
Shelly has some really wicked attack modes. Even without going all the way to sphinx form, she can sprout claws that are sufficient to eviscerate most humanoids (Justin might well have been killed if he wasn’t essentially immortal himself). Her sphinx-form is definitely not just about defense!
I think Corryn is talking about Justin, Shelly’s significant other, not Shelly herself. Justin can regenerate, in fact, IIRC he was once beheaded and regenerated.
Yea, Justin was a bit miffed when he discovered that when he finally met a normal girl she had to turn out to be half Titan half Sphinx. He’s a bit tired of being the chew toy for super powered Para girls.
Super powered Para girls however think that the fact that they don’t have to be afraid of killing him makes him perfect boyfriend matterial.
We’re missing 1-2 panels between 2 and 3. I think what REALLY happened is, Shelley went, “Are you pulling my leg?” and then Digit went “Argleblargle-BOO!” and showed her a human-sized spider-face.
I think that was just rude (albeit funny) on Shelly’s part. Is she afraid that Digit will climb on the underside of Shelly’s bedroom ceiling. and fall on Shelly’s face?
Rude yes, but a phobia by definition is unlogical fear….. and predators react one of two ways to fear, 1. Get the hell away, 2. Murder it……………. so all things considered we should remember that shelly IS an apex predator and be proud of her for the direction she went with it.
Acknowledged and agreed. But what does it take to trigger the phobia? Just the word? I highly doubt it, or she would freak out seeing someone play spider solitaire. These days Digit looks less like a spider than does Kath, what with Kath’s eyes. I can see Shelly not liking a platter of crab legs at a seafood restaurant — there is something that looks like a spider! But Digit has about the same relation to spiderdom as does a silk scarf! Something beautiful that used to be associated with spiders!
I think it was the simple notion that she was literally shaking hands with someone who just definitively said “I’m a spider”. “I JUST TOUCHED A SPIGAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!”
Just about anything can trigger a phobia. A friend had to censor newspapers and check TV programs and movies an such so there were nothing shark related. His girlfriend had a phobia about sharks, and anything that could even remind her of a shark could cause her to panic. And as far as she knew she had never even seen a real shark.
Phobias are not logical. A phobia can be relatively mild, but there’s also no limit on how bad it can be. Triggering a fight or flight response is perfectly possible, and if Shelly had felt cornered this could have ended badly.

Now, she pretty much has to use the construction company owned by Nadette’s family, to avoid having to explain how the damage occurred to a human repair crew……..
Kinda depends on whether Kath has any jumping spiders in her collection. It’d be sort of like someone showing you a collection of stuffed primates…spooky, but not too wierd.

Well Amanda did meet her and Digit attacked her for making fun of Deitzel. Monica tried a desensitization technique but it sort of failed.
Well, judging by her reaction, Monica was quite willing to live with the consequences, just for a chance to epically prank one of her best friends.
