Dave, Song or movie reference for you? Song was typical Idol, the movie sort of seems fitting to Valerie except she is missing the eyes that gave the movie much of its impact…
Valerie needs to get a mask similar to the one that’s part of Sam Starfall’s environment suit. If someone like Lydia can’t whip one up, it’d be a great project for either Gryphon’s Advanced Shop class, or Dragon Wall’s engineering school!
Or if Valerie isn’t using a mask like that because she can’t afford one on her salary, maybe the Gryphon students can get together and get her one for Saint Cthulhu’s Day.
I am guessing that she exists in 2 dimensions simultaneously. Without the mask she seems to be an opening to Eldrerech space, a portal that the tentacles come out of.
You reckon? I have Digit’s problem to a certain extent: my face and tone of voice tend to a monotone.
Once I was driving a taxi, and caught the front wheel-cover on a post while backing out of a circuitous driveway. I drove to a payphone (no cellphones in those days) and called the boss.
“It’s all crumpled up like tinfoil,” I reported in my trademark monotone.
“Well, just carry on, I’ll fix it in the morning.”
“Ummm,..” (No reply. He’d hung up.)
So I went to the central city taxi rank, and pulled up on the end. About thirty seconds later another driver came and told me he’d report me to the company if I tried to pick up customers looking like that.
So I called the boss again. He, sounding aggrieved, arranged to meet me somewhere. We met up, he took one look at the damage, and cried “Oh my God! It’s all crumpled up like tinfoil!”
People don’t actually listen to your words. They mostly go by your expression and tone of voice.
Yeah, try picking up a phone call in an office for one of your cow-orkers. It’ll be a cold day in hell before whoever called will notice that it’s
a) not who they called,
2. their phone doesn’t display the name of who they meant to call and
III: the one who answered (i.e. me) actually gave his full name and said he was picking up for whomever…
People. Just. Don’t. Listen.
Or at the least not during the first 15 seconds of a phone call… they made… themselves.
There is a small clip, not unlike an earpiece or temple piece for glasses, on each side of the mask. A bit short for a human head, but then, they aren’t attaching the mask to a human head, are they?
No, they aren’t. For all we know, she might have magnets or sockets implanted in her skull.
And, the mask might be extremely light. If it’s only there for appearance it could be made of some extremely thin material… just thick enough to be opaque and sufficiently rigid. The biggest stress on the clips (or whatever they are) might be from wind, if she walks around outdoors (which might not happen much, as she couldn’t pass for human in her current form).
Her not being your typical para, Spider-gal Digit seems to be acclimating well to Human(oid) society! That said… WHATEVER HAPPENED TO POOR LITTLE (literally) DIETZEL???
Digit seems to be more grown–up lately, compared to when Atsali first met her.
I wonder how much that has to do with what Cricket did for Digit to make it easier for her to adjust her own appearance. 🤔
It must suck really bad, going around without a face.
So long as it’s not a mask for a bunch of hamsters moving a modified android around…
Now now, they were ‘space hamsters’ that enjoyed reusing the same surname for their psuedonyms.
I understood that reference.
Now I have an urge to start reading through the Narbonic archives.
I had to say it ’cause Valerie’s mask reminded me so much of it.
But on the Gripping Hand…
Taz, I happen to own that book. It’s on my ‘to read’ shelf.
CanuckAmuck; Nothing wrong with that. Say hello to the forescic linguist for me.
So they’re Elcors.
XD you beat me to it lmfao
Yep, but only facially. Their vocal ability to convey emotion is just fine.

Valerie seems like a pleasanter version of Hexadecimal from Reboot, except only one mask.
Yes! God I miss that show. ;_; Stupid razza frazzing cliffhanger endings…
Eyes without a face….
She has a face…. it’s just a mass of tentacles behind the mask but still technically a face of sorts.
She’s got a human race, still eyes without a face
…that’s mostly tentacles
Dave, Song or movie reference for you? Song was typical Idol, the movie sort of seems fitting to Valerie except she is missing the eyes that gave the movie much of its impact…
What?
Perhaps they should take acting classes…
(you mean: ‘Go to France & work with Marcel Marceau…’) oops, RIP Marcel.
Now THATS communication! 🙂
Firm: I believe they should talk more like this, in a style not unlike hk-47 from SWTOR or the glitch from Starbound.
I read Digit’s body language EXACTLY as she described her feelings. She isn’t without tools- she’s getting there.

Oh! Maybe get her a mask that can be puppetted! One with moving eyebrows and a mouth.
That’s exactly what Grant was talking about with his Sam Starfall reference. It’s from the webcomic Freefall.
Even something as simple as Daft Punk. Just have emoties ready to play on an led face.
“Saint Cthulhu’s Day”? * tries to imagine a religion that would celebrate that saint day… and boggles *
This reminds me of a signature I used to see on Usenet, several eons ago:
“It’s time to light the candles
It’s time to say the rites
It’s time to summon Satan
On the Muppet Show tonight!”
I got the same kind of boggle when I tried to imagine a world where that really was the lyrics to the Muppet Show’s theme song…
I’ve heard Valerie has tentacles for a face; what kind of Para is Valerie? (A Cthulhu, maybe?)
To me, Valerie looks like she is a Cthuluoid, a Space Squid, or Stinky’s cousin. From just under a year ago:

Her face is actually a deep void, deeper than her head. The tentacles only showed up when she was releasing her emotions.
I got the reference! Masaki says with great enthusiasm!
mikasa, number 139 of the mikasa network. Is only a level 3 but her big sister is the ace of todokawa high!
Not wearing my emotions on your face would be a blessing more often than a curse.
heh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2guQYivZ6w

*grrr*
Maybe print out some emoji flashcards.
Umm….
May I make a note that the Tentacle Monster is politely requesting to go to the Schoolgirl Slumberparty?
….Thank you and good night!
That’s only a problem if it’s a hentai tentacle monster.
If it’s a FreeFall tentacle monster, their wallets are in jeopardy, not their persons.
How does she keep that mask floating in front of her unattached to anything?
Magic.
Magnets
Suction.

I just noticed… in the third panel, there’s definitely something a bit sinister about Valerie.
Happens to one in nine people…why should the paranormals be different?
In cartoons, people tend to be sinistral or dextral as it suits the convenience of the artist.
Her not being your typical para, Spider-gal Digit seems to be acclimating well to Human(oid) society! That said… WHATEVER HAPPENED TO POOR LITTLE (literally) DIETZEL???
Isn’t Valerie a ^kindergarten^ teacher⁉️
