I have a deep suspicion that Jacqui and Luci were never so much as mentioned to Castela. (Of course this assumes it is Castela they have in mind and not some other young girl who could use a little help.)
Carbon is used as a moderator… it actually increases the reaction rate by its presence (slows down the fast neutrons so they are more likely to interact with uranium). This effect is part of what made the Chernobyl reactor go boom.

… actually a few quick searches yield a number of references to Silver-Iridium-Cadmium alloy Rods and the ominous sounding “Aerosol Formation” that occasionally accompanies use of same.
I’ll stick to Compressed Aerosol Cream Preparations, and the risks on Non-Life-Threatening Concussive injuries 8D
It’s a strange thing, and I’ve noticed it before: I can swear there’s color in Jacqui’s and Shelly’s irises, but when I put a glass on it, they’re white.
Hmm… don’t see it here on my tablet. Maybe the JPEG compression artifacts in the image are Interacting in an interesting way with the shadow mask or pixel structure of your screen?
What kind of display are you using? The screens used in some phones have interesting arrangement of the sub-pixels which can result in some interesting color artifacts in a B&W drawing with sharp lines. Usually the resolution is high enough it’s hardly perceptible, but with good eye sight and close up it can some times be seen.
Another possibility is that you may be observing chromatic aberration. If you are wearing glasses it’s easy to check for. Just look at the comic and tur your head from one side to the other. Turning your head to the right while keeping your eyes on the screen the line and letters will probably show a slight red fringe. Turning your head to the left you will see a blue fringe. This happens as the lenses refract the light slightly differently depending on the wavelength. Lenses made of high quality glass or plastic will show less of this, and the thinner the lens is the smaller the chromatic aberration.
Even the cover glass will cause a slight chromatic aberration, but usually it’s small enough you won’t notice.
I use a 27″ color monitor. I see the color only in the characters’ irises. I have one of those programs that yellow the screen, but it yellows the whole thing equally, not just the eyes. It’s an optical illusion.
Well, I was wrong about that, after looking back. It was Monica I was thinking of, so maybe Jaqui and Luci are still in the dark. This could be interesting.
So what are the odds that some incident with a para was what caused Luci to go stabby stabby as a child?
I can think up all kinds of incidents that could traumatize a small child, ranging from a para caused accident to some really dark stuff like being molested by a pedophile incubus.
Try explaining something like that when you are a child. Unless you happen to meet a para psychologist or social worker no one would believe you when you claim the perp just flew away, disappeared in smoke or whatever…

It’s likely Cas, and I would imagine that they were mentioned.
“I know these people at Punk Yoga. You should meet them.” “Yeah, yeah, sure…”
Luci there is always more to you, and there are some who can see it. ~<3
So Lucy was a violent child.
Mmmmm-Hmm!
… and I’ll bet she didn’t understand why.
THAT’s what she’s bringing to the table! [She’s the Cadmium Control Rod.]
“Cadmium Control Rod”, huh.
I always had it logged as ‘_Carbon_ Control Rods’…

Funny, they don’t look like fast breeders.

No, it’s an optical illusion. There’s no actual color. Perhaps it’s an illusion not everyone is susceptible to.

An NDA, eh? They’re about to be introduced to the world of the Para…
Fairly sure they already are
I think it also has to do with the fact that a minor of immense power is involved.
I know Jaqui knows about paranormals. I don’t remember Luci being aware, though. And I read this strip everyday. Hmmmm…
Well, I was wrong about that, after looking back. It was Monica I was thinking of, so maybe Jaqui and Luci are still in the dark. This could be interesting.
I had no idea Luci had a cruminal past; who knew?
She did say she worked hard to get where she is. And there’s her, er, elaborate skin art as well…
Lucy mentioned fighting and screaming through juvie. Or kicking and screaming, I forget.
Wow, there’s a bit of character reveal. Luci just got deep. I’m intrigued.
Luci now has my attention. I’d love to see a story arc about her sometime.
I wonder if the detective that Luci refers to in panel-3 might be Lily (the surviving 1/6 of Katherine’s mother/s).
So what are the odds that some incident with a para was what caused Luci to go stabby stabby as a child?
