Hahaha!! This is another one for my “I-wish-I-could-animate” list.
I can just see it in my head. It’s even funnier in motion. Body suddenly jolts forward and *POOF* – LONG HAIR!!
…and can she make it stand Straight Up like Jeri in Pre-Teena</aI did once? (And will again sometime next year or so, considering the strip's in re-runs…)
To me it looks like she sneezed so hard it all flopped over her face.
Reminds me of a girl back in H.S. she had long hair, but had the sides of her head shaved. when she split it down the middle it covered all. When she flopped it to one side or the other, a whole another look.
look more carefully..
frame 2: sneeze, ALL her hair streams back…
frame 3: her body is forced back by the blast, so all her ‘hair-in-motion’ moves over her face…. 🙂
Nah. All Shelly has to do now is say, “Yes, and it’s such a pain to put it back up when it comes down. Hell with it, I’ll just wear it long until the sneeze season is over.”
So … okay … does she think Shelly always wore her hair in an “updo” now? She would have to, otherwise she would wonder how it got so long from one week to the next. Still I have to wonder how she could mistake actual short hair for wearing her hair up all that time. It would seem to be an obvious difference.
Also, was it actually an updo this time as opposed to Shelly being able to change her hair length at will (and accidently)?
To quote the seventh doctor: “Your species has the most amazing capacity for self-deception matched only by its ingenuity when trying to destroy itself.”
That’s kind of you to say. No, not a published author of any kind. I do, however, have to write out my part of a dialog for the benefit of people not versed in ASL. Perhaps that has some influence.
Sheesh, I wasn’t exactly talking about the comic. I was responding to Opus the Poet’s statement that Julie didn’t necessarily know that she wasn’t a sphinx.
Sphinxes do sneeze. However, not many people know this, because humans who witness a sphinx sneeze tend not to survive. Being blown backwards off of a cliff, into a wall, etc. at high speed is hard on the bystanders…
AAAAAaaaa…. CHOO!

Why wouldn’t they? based on the human side or the feline side, both of those species DO sneeze, therefore Sphinx’s should too.
and if you want to get a bit more technical, a sneeze is just the bodies way of getting rid of irritants in the nasal cavity, thus helping to prevent them from being breathed in and making the irritation worse… yeah i know it doesn’t always work as well as it could (should), but, with that as a basis for thought, i would think that all forms of air-breathing life could sneeze…
I’ve been on the recieving end of too many dog sneezes to believe that.
And, I’ve known too many dogs that Vet’s have reccomended half a Benadryl for in Central Texas’ ‘Cedar Fever’ season.
Ragweed suuuuuucks! Thankfully I do not seem to be allergic, but my wife is, and in a bad year she’s miserable from mid-August until the first freeze, which in central Texas might not happen until Cedar fever season!
That is the only upside to the terrible drought, no ragweed to be seen yet
A loud sneeze like that is not without precedent. My Ma would do that, and sometimes it would be the only way any of us could find her in a crowd. Army Sister used to get annoyed at her for sneezing like that, but recently, she started to up in volume herself. Her two-year-old thinks it’s funny.
RATS!!! If you see a picture in EBay, bid on it – I so wanted the ‘tons of questions’ one, but life got in the way and I didn’t bid in time and I see it’s gone from the line-up now (sniff) so learn from my mistake! Congrats to the lucky SOB who got it!!! 😉
In the future, use your Sphinx powers to KRUSH the ragweed into submission, Shelly!
L… O… L…
Man, that was funny!!
Oh, well at least Luci provided Shelly with an excuse for the long hair. Shelly doesn’t have to make one up on the spot now. XD
So much more convenient when other people sort your crap out for you.
Think Shelly should just relax
Seems like all her worries will just funny themselves into submission 🙂
Hahaha!! This is another one for my “I-wish-I-could-animate” list.
I can just see it in my head. It’s even funnier in motion. Body suddenly jolts forward and *POOF* – LONG HAIR!!
You do it right and she pitches forward leaving a streamer of temporarily stationary hair behind.
Is it just me of is Shelly’s hair WAY longer than what laughingly passes for normal?
Heh, Monica’s hair used to be longer than that if I remember correctly. I used to have hair down to my rear too. XD
who knows, maybe this is CG’s way of getting Shelly to relax a bit about Luci?
That was an accident. How long can she make it if she tries?
…and can she make it stand Straight Up like Jeri in Pre-Teena</aI did once? (And will again sometime next year or so, considering the strip's in re-runs…)
Now can she make it short again? >:-) That’s supposed to be the devil smiley…
And interesting in that the hair on the back of her head didn’t grow while the front looks like Cousin It…
To me it looks like she sneezed so hard it all flopped over her face.
Reminds me of a girl back in H.S. she had long hair, but had the sides of her head shaved. when she split it down the middle it covered all. When she flopped it to one side or the other, a whole another look.
Notice that, in addition to her hair having flopped forward, her necklace is hanging down her back.
A-yup, that’s a bad sneeze, alright.
Monica sneezed herself right out of her bra. Now that was a bad sneeze!
look more carefully..
frame 2: sneeze, ALL her hair streams back…
frame 3: her body is forced back by the blast, so all her ‘hair-in-motion’ moves over her face…. 🙂
Well, at least she did not go sphinx in public.
I wonder how Luci would have handled that? The way she makes it seem impossible to freak her out.
Oh, that’s easy . . . “Hard core, Ms. Wahnee.”
Paul, you owe me a new keyboard for that one! 😛
Wish I could grow my hair like that!
Is it actually longer? 🙂
Now maybe she can be let in on the secret with all of the others. ;-p
Nah. All Shelly has to do now is say, “Yes, and it’s such a pain to put it back up when it comes down. Hell with it, I’ll just wear it long until the sneeze season is over.”
you know, it does look like she had it tied up in a bun or something in the second frame….
Nah – her head’s shaped like that.
Right, the extra thick skull bone.
She needes something to deflect stray bowling balls after all.
Ack. I hate typos
At least she let go of the doorknob – didn’t rip the doorknob off the door (or the door off it’s hinges)….
Boy, I hate when that happens.
It makes me wonder if her clothes get ruined She-Hulk style when she goes sphinx. Speaking of sphinxes…MOAR PHIX PLZ.
Sneezes the bane of the Wapsiverse.
Along with large spiders and unexpected clumps of snow dropping from the sky in early spring.
So … okay … does she think Shelly always wore her hair in an “updo” now? She would have to, otherwise she would wonder how it got so long from one week to the next. Still I have to wonder how she could mistake actual short hair for wearing her hair up all that time. It would seem to be an obvious difference.

*points up* What Casey said. 🙂 We’re good at seeing only what we either expect to see or whatever makes sense to our brains.
Heheheh… That was reallly funny. 🙂
Lucy is apparently not too perturbed by Shellinx’ odd ‘do.
“ARRGUUHH! I’M BLIND!”
“It’s just your hair, Miss Wahnee.”
“Oh … have a comb?”
“No … would you like your ass watered while I’m here?”
Are you a writer? these dialogues you come up with are just gold. even when they contain cliches. gold.
That’s kind of you to say. No, not a published author of any kind. I do, however, have to write out my part of a dialog for the benefit of people not versed in ASL. Perhaps that has some influence.
I whip my hair back and forth…
Cue: Devo – Jerkin’ Back ‘n’ Forth
Allergy meds are your friends, Shelly.
Unless, of course, they don’t work on sphinxes, in which case you may be somewhat screwed.
Hell….allergy meds don’t work well on me, and I’m pretty sure I don’t have any sphinx blood running through my veins. 😛
And just how would you know without doing a transformation to sphinx mode? >:-)
If you insist on being completely accurate, Julie has yet to see any convincing evidence that she is anything other than completely human.
i think you mean Luci?
I don’t remember a strip where she shows extra-ordinary abilities to Julie, either…
Sheesh, I wasn’t exactly talking about the comic. I was responding to Opus the Poet’s statement that Julie didn’t necessarily know that she wasn’t a sphinx.
For a spinx sized dose of allergy meds she’s going to have to eat those pills like M&M’s. That or just put ’em in a bowl with milk for breakfast.
Some things have to be believed to be seen.
You would think Spinx wouldn’t sneeze.
I’m waiting for her to purposely Spinx-out and answer the can fly/can’t fly question.
We’ve seen Phix fly; no reason to doubt Shelly’s ability with a full wingspan.
Sphinxes do sneeze. However, not many people know this, because humans who witness a sphinx sneeze tend not to survive. Being blown backwards off of a cliff, into a wall, etc. at high speed is hard on the bystanders…

In fact, felines are the only non-primate critters i can think of that do sneeze – and catch colds.
I’ve been on the recieving end of too many dog sneezes to believe that.
And, I’ve known too many dogs that Vet’s have reccomended half a Benadryl for in Central Texas’ ‘Cedar Fever’ season.
….and if the answer is “can fly” for Shelly and Monica to reenact a scene from “Neverending Story”.
(Monica would have to Poit them to somewhere remote first.)
Then it is too bad that Mon’s Island was blown up.
All that time alone meant she wasn’t worried about metamorphic control. These involuntary reactions are going to keep getting in the away.
Wonder if all sphinxes lose form control during involuntary reactions.
…
Perhaps Monica’s boss has gone mad offscreen.
…I see what you did there.
Once you’ve imagined it, you can’t unimagine it.
Sneeze. Loss of control of hair. Phix and Monica’s boss. Monica’s boss insane off camera? Involuntary action. Oh dear… No!
New Clorox-brand brain bleach!
Comes in pint, gallon and handy tanker sizes!
Fairportfan- and the handy swimming pool size, suitable for prolonged soaking.
Maybe she needs more practice–well motivated practice–to gain better control.
Whatever Monica’s boss has experienced, he came back for more. This suggests he’s a good fellow; I hope we see him in the strip again soon.
I wish my hair did that, when I sneezed.
As long as the “sneeze extention” hair is healthy hair.
We really don’t need split ends and other damaged hair that’s over two feet long.
HAAhahahahahaaaaa ohhh this is wonderful lmao <3
I didn’t know it was possible to hide that much hair in a hairstyle.
It’s not.
I whip my hair back and forth, I whip my hair back and forth

Be thankful they don’t scream when they sneeze like my wife’s family does.
I know a fellow or two like that. Very obnoxious.
Ewwww! Booger hair!
…did she just sneeze her hair on backwards? XD
RATS!!! If you see a picture in EBay, bid on it – I so wanted the ‘tons of questions’ one, but life got in the way and I didn’t bid in time and I see it’s gone from the line-up now (sniff) so learn from my mistake! Congrats to the lucky SOB who got it!!! 😉
SNEEZE the day, girly-girl! 😉
They do seem to be getting along much better now.
kinda looks like shelly sneezed herself backwards.
