Tina 2.0 likely broke her own arm in order to distract Amanda and Monica from the mañecua in the cellar, and who- knows-what else that may be down there. It also seems that Tina 2.0 is trying to hide something, maybe the mañecua is a canoptic “soul” jar for Tina 1.0 … ?
I wonder what Amanda and monica are thinking about in the waiting room…neither looks very happy, I think a rift might have formed despite Tina’s efforts.
Well, Amanda can’t be happy with having her nose shoved in the fact of Monica’s feeling being (so far as she knows) dead on, and the fact she was belittling Monica about it.
Monica, of course — she knows something is wrong with this broken arm scenario — and there’s the fact that Phix appears to have lied to her.
Neither has much reason to be happy at the moment.
Well, I guess Tina’s masochistic idea worked. Amanda stopped asking about Monica’s strange behavior, and Monica stopped trying to come up with a convincing lie. Now they are both concerned about Tina’s well being.
And I have to agree with Amanda’s body language; the furniture at a hospital lounge is never comfortable.
Interesting style in the first panel – the waiting room background looks like a solarized black-and-white photo that has been inked over. Paul has used semi-photo backgrounds like this before.
It doesn’t look as if he inked over the stuff on the right side. The lamp must have been added separately. It’s a nice touch, but it needs to be rotated a little.
Judging by Amanda’s body language (eyebrows, I guess), she’s feeling that she overreacted to Monica’s ‘premonition’ — and both of their postures are standard hospital waiting room fare. Did Monica see Tina break her arm? Seems to be more annoyance there than there should be.
I don’t know about that. I viewed her body language as mixed. Legs crossed towards Monica hints at a possible desire to make some sort of attempt at communication; however, leaning away suggests stubborn determination not to do so.
Especially since I viewed her facial expression as one of thoughtful concern that might not be directed at our favorite barista. I figured she was contemplating having a chat with Monica about trust or something else like that.
I dunno. They have had plenty of time and privacy to clear the air while waiting for Tina to get her arm looked at, but they’re not talking at all…or they did talk and it did not go well…
Ma told us kids a story once about this one guy, who was always trying to use Kiowa, Comanche, or other local tribal languages, and getting it wrong in spectacular ways. Once, he was with friends at a cook-out. He wanted to say “Pass the butter” where butter would be something like “hard milk”. He said “zape-koy” instead. “Pass the bra” isn’t something you say in mixed company, especially when elders are present. The grandmas chewed him out, and everybody else laughed themselves silly.
Dami:
Not a bit of it. Webcomics reference each other all the time. Here is a lovely example, which mentions Wapsi Square and Dominic Deegan, among others …
He said “Pass the zape-koy”, which was followed by a couple of beats of silence, then the reactions. “Zape” (very hard to spell words that were never written down) refers to “breast”, so the term is “breast holder” or somesuch.
He also once tried to brag about the women he’d been with, using the Comanche terms. The suffix “Thai-vah” meaning person, and a descriptive to signify color or trait. He went through a few to mean black girls, asian, white, and so forth. Then, he said “Qwasi-thai-vah” and ruined himself. It means “tail/butt person” and is used for monkeys.
okay this makes me think too much on wether demons are alive or just tinas demons or wether tina can feel pain or why the doctor could not see she was not fully human or….
*gets coffee and tries to find something shiny to distract*
Just my own opinion on Tina – I think her body is alive, but as if in a coma. The real Tina died in the accident and the demons took over. They are in control of a working body that has no original self. Like being carjacked on a astral level.
It later came to light that In a previous loop, Jin and Tina were friends. Jin took Tina’s death hard. What made it worse was the fact that Jin could have saved her, but she had to choose between saving Tina or Monica.
I don’t think Jin ever really came to terms with the ‘rats’.
I’ve only just gone through the archive, having recently found Wapsi, but I’m ringing on Jin’s reaction to Tina. She has been in the coffee shop, hasn’t she?
I’m really curious as to how the demons did that. Tina 1.0 was dead. She was so dead the authorities took her to the morgue. The demons somehow managed to jump-start her, repair whatever (fatal) damage the crash did, reverse the cellular deterioration that death brings about, and get her up and out., apparently so alive that neither the dentist who fixed her teeth, or the doctors who put the cast on her, saw anything wrong. That’s a REALLY MASSIVE magical reconstruction, and if her demons are able to do that, you have to wonder what else they can do… Besides inadvertantly fry spiders. I mean…
It has been implied that this was able to occur due to Monica’s involvement in the accident. Something about the presence of the Glyph Reader and the magical distortions to the surrounding area that can cause. The exact metaphysical mechanics involved have yet to be spelled out as far as I know.
I am looking forward to getting back to Tina’s diary. It will prbably spell out what she was going through with the trial of her father, etc. that waould cause the emotional turmoil that allowed her demons to take over when she died.
It’s also supposed to help Jin get over her haunting somehow…it makes me wonder if during this last loop if Tina was Jin’s psychiatrist before she died, and was also a collector of antique teapots…
@txmystic: I can’t think of anything canonical that indicated that Tina’s diary would help fix Jin’s problem. We’ve speculated that it might, but that’s as far as it goes, IIRC. I can’t remember Paul saying anything about them since they were first mentioned. They might have only been a plot device to cause Phix to explain Maya’s and Jin’s role in things to Monica. I hope there is more to them than that, though.
Jin said that Brandi (in a previous time loop, I assume) told her to not get close to anyone. Monica and Shelly are emphasized (it’s even more specific here), but it would probably include Tina, too. That’s making me doubt there was much contact between Tina and Jin in this loop.
Can’t find the reference, but ISTR that Nudge was the one who hotwired Tina 1.0’s body in the morgue, or else provided the motivation for the entire collective to do so…or something.
Without Nudge, the body would have just died, and the demons would have suffered whatever fate normally awaits those who break the rules.
At least, that’s what Nudge claimed, during an argument between her/it and the rest of the collective.
Maybe Amanda is thinking: “self fulfilling prophecy.” If we had not rushed over to the cafe and gotten Tina all upset, she probably wouldn’t have done something careless to break her arm. We probably shudda just stayed put.
And Monica may be thinking: Damn! I hope she doesn’t think this is some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy now.
She’s always been well-endowed, and often she crosses her arms to emphasize her bust. But only recently (twice in the past week) have we seen Tina front and center in one of the large panels, and since she’s wearing a too-small tank top her accents are deliciously prevalent…
I’m assuming Amanda drove, which would explain why she is there, besides not having other plans. She never met Tina before today, so she didn’t need to be there as Tina’s friend. Monica walks a lot, so she might not have a car handy.
When Tina found herself face to face with Phix, her eyes <a href=”http://wapsisquare.com/comic/a-good-kid/”went human. I think her daemons were doing the equivalent of hiding under the bed, or behind the couch; they withdrew as deeply into the shell as they could.
I suspect some similar attribute would be possible for things like a visit to the hospital.
I don’t think that was deliberate control over the look of her eyes, but rather, how she appeared to Bud, who seems to see Tina’s various demons rather than her human body.
On the other hand, the most any human has commented on Tina’s eyes is that they’re silver. Maybe nobody notices the spirals.
I dunno ’bout you, but I’m just digging Tina being around more and more. Can’t wait to see what’s going on (and we all know Paul’s always got something cool up his sleeve). The suspense! The suspense!
Dunno if anyone has gone down this thought-path or not…
but…
What if Phix – as a supernatural powerhouse that can warp reality – actually DID something to Tina?
Like… made her mortal? Actually made her alive again… Or (more) able to feel pain?
Maybe as a lesson to anyone who endangers M? Or maybe as ‘insurance’ to keep her out of the Library?
Maybe that’s why Tina’s all freaked out http://wapsisquare.com/comic/hope-she-is-okay/… and why Tina broke her own arm (in disbelief)…
“Crazy-tall lady can’t have been serious with her mojo, I’ll prove it HOLY CRAP!”
If not, I’ll stay quiet in the corner here… if someone could adjust my tinfoil hat for me that’d be great… straightjackets aren’t conducive to having one’s arms free…
I continue to feel sorry for Tina. All she (they) does is try to fit in and be cheerful, nice and helpful, yet all she gets in return is grief. They use her when it’s handy for them to get information, then forget her. She “lives” for the next day. She is so happy when morning comes and she can be among humans again, however brief each encounter may be.
Me !
I do!! Now hold your arm out as I slooooooowwwwwwwwllllllyyyyyyyy sssssiiiiiiiiiiggn mmmmmmyyyyyyyy nnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmme…
You are a cruel person….. 😉
Okay.
Tomorrow will be Bud finding a cute guy she likes. leaving only Brandi un-paired of the central cast…
Maybe, about next Tuesday, Pablo will begin to tell us why Tina did that.
So Angel there doesn’t count as a part of the central cast?
Angel = Tina?
Tina’s demons’s dates would be weird with that many chaperons.
Not if being around her gives each a chance to have fun…
What is the cryptic advice for, if not for fun little indulgences?
Each demon should have its own, separate dates . . .

Monica, of course — she knows something is wrong with this broken arm scenario — and there’s the fact that Phix appears to have lied to her.
Neither has much reason to be happy at the moment.
Plus they are probably bored stiff. Monica had other stuff to do and Amanda finally had a day off.
Now THAT’S a TRUE friend… breaking your own arm to cover for your friend’s “premonition”!

The local “Indian Clinic” used to have that furniture until a couple of years ago.
Oh look – it’s Georgette!
Glad someone else noticed that!
Noticed it, too. But having trouble reading if it’s a mag cover or a flyer for her pub.
1. I love how Georgette is on a magazine cover in the waiting room!
2. Do Tina’s actions count as a reverse Munchausen-by-Proxy aimed at herself? That is, fulfilling someone else’s desires by harming themselves?
3. Or — is it all a clever plot by Tina to distract them from The Death Doll?!?!
Any speculation on whether Pablo was waiting to see how soon someone noticed?
I noticed that there’s no ‘Highlights’ magazine…
Maybe the doctor doesn’t see children.
Does anyone have any guesses as to what the title says? The second word might be Happenings, but it’s very hard to tell.
You’re right!! What kind of medical facility waiting room doesn’t have at least one Highlights magazine???
🙂 I saw Georgette pretty quickly and giggled. I wonder if she’s going to elbow her way back into the story line again.
I’d say 4, which is provide Monica with a convenient excuse not to tell Amanda about all the supernatural stuff.
Judging by Amanda’s body language (eyebrows, I guess), she’s feeling that she overreacted to Monica’s ‘premonition’ — and both of their postures are standard hospital waiting room fare. Did Monica see Tina break her arm? Seems to be more annoyance there than there should be.

I dunno. They have had plenty of time and privacy to clear the air while waiting for Tina to get her arm looked at, but they’re not talking at all…or they did talk and it did not go well…
Maybe she couldn’t be damaged, or maybe damage herself before?
Trying out something new can sometimes lead to pain. Or pleasure. Maybe she is going to start experimenting.
Oh let me, let me! I want to sign it.
“Why, yes, we both want to kick your ass – Oh, you said ‘sign my cast’. Heh. Sorry. Freudian slip, there.”
never tell a girl her Freudian Slip is showing 😀
Bob: I had the most embarrassing Freudian Slip the other day.
Ed: Oh really? How so?
Bob: At breakfast, I meant to say, “Pass the butter, dear,”
but instead I blurted out, “You’ve ruined my life, you bitch!”
That kind of reminds me of Donovan from Dominic Deegan. Oh my, I mentioned another webcomic, is that a faux pas?
No, Dami, though a link would have been nice…
There is a Comanche word for bra? Is this a relatively new word, since the bra is relatively new, or has there always been such a word?

Jabberwonky:
According to Jin, that was exactly what happened to Tina.
I think I’d rather think of them as carjackers than rats….
Nudge was kind of sexy, in a Hellraiser sort of way…
It later came to light that In a previous loop, Jin and Tina were friends.
Or NOT ringing on Jin’s reaction…
This and the next few strips…
Also, Paul’s comments on that strip …
I mean…
She can make really good coffee.
Good coffee, but not perfect coffee!
It has been implied that this was able to occur due to Monica’s involvement in the accident. Something about the presence of the Glyph Reader and the magical distortions to the surrounding area that can cause. The exact metaphysical mechanics involved have yet to be spelled out as far as I know.

Wrong link…this shoould have been it, same as the “This” link in Fatuncle’s earlier comment:a collector of antique teapots…
@txmystic: I can’t think of anything canonical that indicated that Tina’s diary would help fix Jin’s problem. We’ve speculated that it might, but that’s as far as it goes, IIRC. The other thing is that a previous Brandi managed to work with Tina’s demons to help arrange the accident without Jin figuring it out ever, as far as we know. That might given Brandi a reason to tell Jin to not get close to Tina — there would be less of a chance of Jin figuring things out or messing things up that way.
Can’t find the reference, but ISTR that Nudge was the one who hotwired Tina 1.0’s body in the morgue, or else provided the motivation for the entire collective to do so…or something.

At least, that’s what Nudge claimed, during an argument between her/it and the rest of the collective.
I can’t remember if it was Monica or Shelly that called her a zombie, but Tina took great offense to that and said that she is *not* a zombie.
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/educateme/
I never know what to write.
just write blah blah blah speculation speculation blah blah blah. Seems to work ^_^
bleah
Excuse me? You are infringing on my copyright!
And here I thought it was the grammar thing.
They’re both copyleft anyway…
Hsssssssss
It’s always worked well for me.
Oh, and Tina may be thinking: Oh hell! Their auras say they both wanna break my other arm for causing so much drama!
Although it may be prurient to point it out…Is Tina gradually getting bustier?
Not that she’ll ever pose much of a challenge to M, but it certainly seems like she might be Wonderbra’ing it as of late.
The wonders of Hellbrew coffee?
She’s always been well-endowed, and often she crosses her arms to emphasize her bust. But only recently (twice in the past week) have we seen Tina front and center in one of the large panels, and since she’s wearing a too-small tank top her accents are deliciously prevalent…
I don’t think so, I think it is just Paul’s natural tendency to drawing larger boobs
I agree. We’ll know for sure when, as things progress, he starts giving Amanda some additional boobage.
Just so long as he doesn’t go Winger on us…
:shudder:
The only “Winger” i know of is a character in Glen Cook’s “Garrett” books…
And Bill Murray in “Stripes”….
Debra Winger (actress)?
I’m assuming Amanda drove, which would explain why she is there, besides not having other plans. She never met Tina before today, so she didn’t need to be there as Tina’s friend. Monica walks a lot, so she might not have a car handy.
When you go to the hospital you get examined. They look in your eyes. Anyone wonder what the doc or the nurse or the PA thought when they did that?
I’d sign Tina’s cast. Just like txmystic suggested…
Wait. I’m still
staringsigning…I’d probably forget what I was writing.
Or maybe go on and on writing, eventually covering the whole thing on all sides. Then you could ask her to break the other arm so you can finish.
Dammit, it just won’t work in MS Word. Have to use Wordpad.
Her eyes <a href= "http://wapsisquare.com/comic/a-good-kid/"went human .
One more, with profanity: Her eyes “went human
I’m afraid Fatuncle will hurt himself or at least get his mouth washed out with soap. Her eyes went human. Whew!
She seemed to be able to deliberately control it in the Cerberus Club, so perhaps she could do it realistically in the doctor’s office.
For something different, in Shelly’s dream, her eyes seemed to go blank and perhaps were reflecting the coffee shop windows.
Holy crap in a hat, I think that’s Nudge speaking in the Cerberus Club.
I dunno ’bout you, but I’m just digging Tina being around more and more. Can’t wait to see what’s going on (and we all know Paul’s always got something cool up his sleeve). The suspense! The suspense!
True friends break their arms for you.
Best friends break your arm because you’re being an idiot.
Dunno if anyone has gone down this thought-path or not…
but…
What if Phix – as a supernatural powerhouse that can warp reality – actually DID something to Tina?
Like… made her mortal? Actually made her alive again… Or (more) able to feel pain?

If not, I’ll stay quiet in the corner here… if someone could adjust my tinfoil hat for me that’d be great… straightjackets aren’t conducive to having one’s arms free…
Learning to type with your toes is mandatory for this webcomic.
Is it just me, or does the subtle shading of the wall go right through Amanda’s head?
It wasn’t just you, but Paul fixed it.
Well , at least we know Tina has group coverage .
Not nearly enough, yuk yuk yuk…
Well, from the CAST and crew of Wapsi square…Have a good night!
Is it just me or does Amanda have legs that could give Bud’s gams a run (pun intended) for their money?
