I have my suspicions that the Golem formula must do something to the person’s forward dentition as a side-effect. Maybe it’s because of one of the components of the formula.
A) a touching emotional moment with her long lost mother
B) a violently angry emotional moment with her long lost mother
C) completely loose what little mind she has left
D) All of thee above
Okay, the sudden contrast between light and dark was just very striking to me. One would think that with all of those windows, that there would be more light reaching her bed.
It’s overcast out, any camera pointing in Jin’s direction will not be picking up a lot of light, the reverse when aiming the camera in the direction of the windows, it will be quite bright by comparison. Diffused light falls off much faster than direct light. My mistake was neglecting to have May backlit by the windows.
I don’t know, she clearly did some bad things, and didn’t think things through enough, but we haven’t seen her actually intentionally kill any innocents.
and I… really don’t? yes, she gave the priests the formula to create golems, in her attempt to *fix* the problem. I think the fact that she didn’t foresee what they did with it clearly shows her as NOT being evil, because only an evil mind (or a historian, by this point in history) could conceive of that. She sacrificed herself twice over to try to solve the calendar problem. that’s not evil. that others did evil with what they learned from her is not her responsibility.
After doing some looking back at things, I’m thinking this arc isn’t quite done just yet.
Why, you ask? The first two Wapsi Square books ended roughly around the first week of February. I’m thinking we’re pretty close to that being the next “break” for Book Four.
Of course, I’m not the artist, and I could be drastically wrong.
So, is Jin’s mom a serpent gollum as well? And how did she acquire her present form? Jin appears as a young Asian woman only because Tepoz summoned her and the others in the form of drunken college girls. Is Mayahuel a blowsy suburban cougar?
Assuming correctly, Brandi is standing and Jin has a buffaunt type of thing? Is there another pic of them where the outfits are more visible? M is kinda in the way.
??? So has Jin always been Asian, Bud European and Brandi African? I have a hard time envisioning how all three could have been brought together at the same spot 10k years ago, even if the calendar priesthood themselves were world travelers.
There is some speculation that ancient Greek populations also had some instances of blond hair, and as the city of Lanthis was somewhere near the Mediterranean, I was hoping not to have too far of a stretch for a diverse looking culture. This of course took place before the last ice age and all traces of the civilization, save the Spinx was whiped from the planet.
So i’m guessing that civilization hadn’t spread enough by 10K BCE to make distance an issue, yet race could still have possibly developed before then.
I suppose considering where we think Atlantis is we can assume that the priests didn’t have to go far to abduct Bud and Brandi, who we’ve seen in the flashbacks as togeather, and Jin wouldn’t have needed to travel that far.
You Yisi
BTW, are you ever thinking of switching back to the horizontal comic, or are we going to stick with the full page-size?
Pretty near certain – and there’s a good chance that Cleopatra (who was a Ptolemy, a Greek family, actually) was a blonde or redhead.
(Blondes and redheads are common in some parts of Italy and Greece, stereotypes to the contrary notwithstanding – for instance, Mario Girotti {better known as Terence Hill}…)
Awww. Jin! I’m gonna start crying if they have a real emotive mom-daughter reunion moment here. But I wont be surprised if all hell breaks loose instead. Hopefully not actully *Hell* though. Yikes.
Speaking of family traits, is Maya going to turn out as nuts as her daughter? At least, as wacko as Jin’s been lately? She’s got that certain crazy light in her eyes. Of course, after 80,000 years in demonland, you’d expect a little PTSD at the very least…
Y’know … aside from her snaky eyes and fearsome dentition, Mayahuel looks like the kind of mother I’d like to have tea with … maybe even BECAUSE of her snaky eyes and fearsome dentition!
Agreed! I’d love to be a fly on the wall for that tea party! BTW, How do you pronounce Jin’s Mom’s name? My-a whell?? or May-a hool? I think the former but would like to know for sure for my inside voices’ dialogue!
I would never pretend to be able to speak/read Spanish, never took lessons!
Jin’s jaw is apparently touching the floor…
Jin has her mothers eyes. :3
And teeth… : )
Must be a family trait.
…and hair.
I have my suspicions that the Golem formula must do something to the person’s forward dentition as a side-effect. Maybe it’s because of one of the components of the formula.
aye. but it looks quite badass.
…And cat-like posture.
(There’s a theme here, you realize?)
That’s what I was thinking.
Bravo on the look of utter disbelief and confusion on Jin’s face
Fully understandable, considering Jin’s last memory of her mother.
“….the sound of ripping fabric…”
Can’t shake the feeling I’ve seen that expression somewhere. The resemblance truly is uncanny =)
In Peter David’s run on Supergirl, Linda (not Kara) finds herself face-to-face with Lex Luthor, and gasps “You!”
Luthor, who’s running for President and has been getting this a lot, says “sigh Me.”
Jin’s reaction in the final panel looks like the setup for a very similar punchline…
Been waiting for this for 3 years. Lovely!
Only three?
I foresee a glomp in the future, with a lot of tears.
Poor Jin. Happy for her, and all misty eyed at the same time.
Hugs and kisses are certainly possible.
So is a scream of rage over all she’s suffered in her mother’s service and a punch so powerful it hurls May into low Earth orbit.
Maybe both.
now the question is, is Jin about to have:
A) a touching emotional moment with her long lost mother
B) a violently angry emotional moment with her long lost mother
C) completely loose what little mind she has left
D) All of thee above
I’ll go with E – which is D, but in rotation…
D’awwwww…. she’s about to start bawling like a little baby. (I’ll go with “D”, though, from Amethyst’s comment.)
On second thought, I’ll go with “E” from fairportfan, FTW…
Are those two even in the same building?
Yeah, that’s Jin’s penthouse apartment. She has all-glass windows, IIRC.
Here’s a good look at her apartment (from a couple of years ago).

I don’t care what “explainations” mom may come up with, I still consider her to be pure evil.
… plus a blend of space-age ceramics.
Don’t judge her just because she won’t burn up on re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere…
I don’t know, she clearly did some bad things, and didn’t think things through enough, but we haven’t seen her actually intentionally kill any innocents.

(The guard may not have been a simon-pure innocent bystander, but he was soitny a lamb to the slaughter.)

Last pic: Gollum….

Dang, they are gonna need name tags now…
So, is Jin’s mom a serpent gollum as well? And how did she acquire her present form? Jin appears as a young Asian woman only because Tepoz summoned her and the others in the form of drunken college girls. Is Mayahuel a blowsy suburban cougar?
Tepoz had them appear in modern college clothing, as apposed to their attire here: http://wapsisquare.com/about/

BTW, the Ancient Brandi illustration is awesome.
Poit?

I’m not sure, but for now I can say that I’m enjoying working in the full page format. =)

Apology speeches. Never go as well as you think they would. An apology breakfast however, makes forgiveness a bit easier.
Jin looks amazing.
She looks like she is about to burst into tears..
Her mom be back – her personal hell is all over … kinda 🙂
I can’t wait for tomorrow’s strip… I have a feeling it’s going to be so adorably sweet!
*Goosebumps*
Mayahuel is one scary-looking lady! Her expression is that of a person right on the razor’s edge of complete meltdown… *shudder*
Jin got that from her, too?
Awww. Jin! I’m gonna start crying if they have a real emotive mom-daughter reunion moment here. But I wont be surprised if all hell breaks loose instead. Hopefully not actully *Hell* though. Yikes.
Nothing matters anymore, ’cause mom’s home!
SWEEEEET 😀
BTW – Pablo spells it correctly, but i’ve been noticing a number of misspellings of “golem” in the comments…
What’s with the weird comma placement?
Awkward pacing in her speech.
Speaking of family traits, is Maya going to turn out as nuts as her daughter? At least, as wacko as Jin’s been lately? She’s got that certain crazy light in her eyes. Of course, after 80,000 years in demonland, you’d expect a little PTSD at the very least…
I love how snake-y Jin always looks. I especially love that her mom looks snake-y too. More than that, I love the last panel here. D’:
Y’know … aside from her snaky eyes and fearsome dentition, Mayahuel looks like the kind of mother I’d like to have tea with … maybe even BECAUSE of her snaky eyes and fearsome dentition!
I agree. She would make a most interesting conversation partner over tea. =)
I’ve been getting a lot busier lately, it’s put my personal projects on hold, almost to the point of eliminating them, which is unfortunate.
I have a comic that I want to put on the web, and this page has re-invigorated me, thanks for being kickass.
Last frame – brilliantly done expression. /claps
This would be the most consistent pronunciation for the name that I’ve seen; Mayahuel – mAH ha KWEL
I hope that helps. =)
Paul, you’re an artistic genius.
Great, now I’M crying…
Same here… this might be the sweetest scene yet… Oh, Jin’s face…
I’m getting the feeling that Paul is deliberately drawing Jin to look younger so that the contrast to her mother is more clear.
Awww! happy for Jin!
