I can kind of see why he acted like this. He’s been told he is hot but stupid for so long, now her is someone that is hot and smart in front of him. He likes her and she, hopefully, likes him. But, as far as he is concerned, she is out of his league mentally. Only so much you can tell a person he is stupid before it does lasting damage.

And someone get Hiroshi a counselor to realize he’s not messed it up too badly, but he needs to deal with the damage he did to her and the relationship potential just might be saved.
